for me wyndcliff is just a depository for actors/characters leaving the show whom the writers didn't want to kill off permanently.

willie, elizabeth and barnabas all got stays at wyncliff while the actors who played them needed time off...vacation?wyndcliff!summer stock?wyndcliff!you get the idea.

on a more permanent note i don't think that they wanted to close the door on the possibility of both joe and/or maggie returning at some point hence they were not killed off but sent to wyndcliff but the program was cancelled before that ever came up.

i wish they had just sent vicki(god knows she deserved some r and r)to wyndcliff rather than the more grim and permanent fate she suffered later on.

i agree that the 1897 period lent itself to something of a "goth" interpretation more than the other time periods the show covered.

the victorian era in general does have something of that feel.

this exhibit covers that to some degree.

i haven't seen these episodes in a long time(although i'm nearing them again)but i remember being annoyed at the condition ned kept sabrina in...

her hair went white from shock...we get it...but would it have killed him to run a brush through his sister's hair once in awhile, perhaps tie a bow,and apply her makeup with a less heavy hand?

for those in the new york area and interested in such things there is a nice exhibition at the 'museum of the fashion institute of technology' called 'gothic.dark glamour'.

it's devoted to gothic fashions both historical and current.included are garments that run from victorian mourning costume to contemporary pieces from dior, rodarte, rick owens and alexander mcqueen among others.

a topic like this came up here before but it's interesting that d.s. is a "gothic" in everything but it's dress.the music is gothic.the sets are gothic.the plots are gothic.but the fashions are the same colorful, jaunty mod styles being worn across the boards in the late sixties and early seventies.not a "goth" look in sight which is remarkable for a series featuring vampires, witches, warlocks and ghosts.even angelique as a vampire was all white chiffon and golden curls.

the 'fashion institute' is located at seventh avenue at twenty seventh street.the show runs until february 21st.for information call 212-217-4558.

Current Talk '08 II / the future is sleeveless!
« on: December 16, 2008, 09:28:50 PM »
i was reading 'women's wear daily'(the fashion industry trade paper)and their year end roundup of notable fashion events and quotes...

quoted was legendary couturier pierre cardin who had this remarkably dark-shadows-ish thing to prophetize...

..."the future of fashion is sleeveless.who needs sleeves anymore?you need to be able to move and be comfortable.to layer.seasons don't exist like they used to.now it's cold in summer and hot in winter.fashion needs to look foreward."

who knew that miss winters was so forward thinking in her garment of choice?or that collinsport maine's dyslexic climate(green leaves in winter.coats and blazing fires all summer long)had such future global implications? [santa_rolleyes]

i was watching an episode last night that i had never seen before.

it's at the start of the quentin storyline and carolyn and chris jennings go to the blue whale for a drink.

instead of the usual bartender there is some sort of waitress/barmaid on duty(she'll meet and unfortunate fate later on but that's beside the point).i swear she is wearing maggie's old blue waitress's uniform.costuming must have decided to get a bit of use out of this long forgotten garment from another time on the show.

indeed with her short blond hair this gal is a dead ringer for early maggie evans.

this was during the great "brewster's" subplot of 1969/70...

i believe that the newspaper announced that "brewster's" was open late until christmas.

funny during leviathans they actually started to acknowledge that david was in fact "growing up" only a few months later during the gerard storyline to have him revert to a "child" with a nanny and a playroom and a dollhouse.strange.

b.t.w. the dress in question did not belong to miss winters.sleeves. [santa_rolleyes]

poor besty durkin inherits some of alexandra moltke's more unfortunate castoffs...jeff clark,a lame storyline, and some of vicki's old duds.

costuming sprung for a few new things for betsy but she definitely got the blue coat with the yellow lining vicki often wore but because she was several inches shorter than alexandra was it was too big.

i believe she also got the well passed around floral nightgown ensemble(the ingenues all got it)that arashi mentions.

1885
interestingly this...

where i did read about this alexandra is invariably refered to as a "socialite" and a former "soap opera actress" although d.s. i not mentioned by name(as if the time traveling victoria winters was just some chick on 'all my children').

her work as a documentary filmaker was(fortunately for her)not mentioned.

1886
i live in new york and i can tell you that this scandal resonates little in the popular imagination.
indeed few people under forty have ever even heard of claus and sunny von bulow...or alexandra isles.

mrs.von bulow's death came and went as a blip.i mentioned it at work and most people didn't know what i was talking about.

in her current role as documentary filmmaker alexandra is likely surrounded by a rather high-minded,intellectual community that probably cares little for such salaciousness.

because of alexandra's involvement d.s. fans are somewhat plugged into this sordid little tidbit but i think most people have long ago forgotten the details of this whole affair.

this is great news!

filming in london doesn't bother me...the climate seems more evocative of maine than palm trees and the blazing california sun of the 1991 series.

i'm sure they will continue to set the story in maine.

has it been confirmed that hbc will have a role or are we just assuming that based on burton's past work?she's actually almost old enough to play a youngish liz.she has the stature.

i haven't seen this episode in ages but wasn't carolyn sort of casual when she thought that ned stuart was jeff clark?

did carolyn know that jeff...and subsequently her "best friend" vicki...disappeared into thin air?i don't recall her having much reaction to that transpirance.

i don't know this as fact but my impression of the reappearance of roger davis as ned stuart so hot on the heels of jeff clark has always been that davis was under contract(two years seems to add up to his first and last appearances in his various guises)and they needed to find him something to do once the vicki character was gone and that storyline was over.

Current Talk '08 II / Re: DS VS Star Trek? Why So Little Respect For DS?
« on: November 30, 2008, 06:53:32 PM »
i'm not sure how much "respect" star trek fans actually get...being branded a "trekkie" sort of qualifies one for the geekdom hall of fame in many peoples eyes.

except for the "cult" nature of their fanbases for the life of me i'll never understand why these two programs are always lumped together.
one is gothic melodrama and the other pure science fiction.i don't really see the connection. [hall2_huh]

i can't stand star trek.
