Current Talk '09 I / Re: Was DS ever actually shown live?
« on: February 10, 2009, 04:57:23 PM »
i just watched that interview too.it's on dvd collection 12.

i'd love to know what episodes went on live as well...if it's true.

sometimes d.s. seems to foster some kind of "false memory syndrome" in it's participants and viewers.they "remember" things that never actually happened.anyone who's read kathryn leigh scott's books know she comes up with some doozies.

and i've heard that joan bennett "welcome to hollywood" story about a million times.

since episodes were generally taped a week in advance i can't imagine under what circumstances would have forced it to go on "live".just in terms of sequence it seems unlikely as episodes did not air the day they were taped. [snow_undecided]

yes the series was quite well written and plotted here...

after the schlock that had been the previous several months(adam and co.)it's like someone stepped back and said 'we don't have to throw in everything but the kitchen sink' and can take a bit of time to craft a well told tale.

it reminds me more of the laura collins or the early barnabas story.

i never really thought about what midnite said about david's upbringing but yes he(and amy)are leading very sheltered, isolated lives, surrounded by some seriously screwed up adults.

this is the part of the show that i'm currently watching.it's such a treat!

mrs. johnson is one of those early characters that, unfortunately, often gets back-burnered during the full onset of the supernatural years but during the quentin hauntings she's returned to a position of prominence and given some supreme material.some of her scenes with those two "diabolical" children are too good for words.

and i've decided this...

i wish that mrs. johnson appeared in every single episode.she doesn't need to be a major player like barnabas or julia.she can even just answer a door or a telephone.but she lends such a distinctive note i wish that, like the opening voiceover, she had been a daily presence. [snow_smiley]

quentin was such a wonderfully wicked and complicated character during 1897 it's strange what became of him later.

like many characters on the show he lost alot of his edge en route to popularity.after the storyline returned to the "present" he devolved into just another generic, hand wringing collins(albiet an extremely handsome one).he was never as much fun again. [snow_lipsrsealed]

vicki and jeff "went at it" alright...

but as "passionate" as it was because of the way the dialogue for them was written it always seemed like they were bickering.that's probably not how it was intended but it's how it came across to me.

this was compounded by the difference in acting styles between alexandra and roger...her placidness contrasted to his belligerence...that gave their scenes together an odd dissonance.

indeed...

suki forbes, buffie harrington, leone eltridge, donna friedlander and susie from the diner should have been given their own spin-off series.

they were robbed! [snow_pirate]

i agree that angelique works best when she disappears for awhile and then pops up unexpectedly like a bad penny.it's more fun that way.

and rachel's snoopiness seems to be par for the course.when the collins family invites houseguests and/or hires domestic help one can bet that everyone will come out of it worse for the wear. [snow_sick2]

judith and quentin playing as children? [snow_huh]

she's about thirty years older than him.

i thought the whole point of the judith character was that she was an embittered "old maid".

the indeterminate age difference between siblings on this show... [snow_silly]

alexandra as evan's "extravagant wife" would have been fun but since d.c. thought she could only play vicki...

besides by this point she was probably on her third trimester.

was 1897 already on the drawing boards when she left?was she supposed to play rachel?

i agree with midnite that under kls she was a dull character.

vicki wouldn't have made sense in the time period.they would have had to find something for alexandra to do.

if i won a million dollars one of the first things i would do would be to commission "lenox" to create a complete set of fine china featuring all my favorite d.s. characters(service for twelve please).

elizabeth on an elaborate tea service.mrs.johnson on a gravy boat.julia on a pepper mill.vicki, carolyn and maggie on cups and saucers.

what elegant dining!what fun!

i'm loving the mix-and-match possibilities of the "collectors postcards" and the travel tumbler.i don't have all of the "beginning" dvds yet.does anyone know if laura is featured on any of the cards?she'd keep the coffee nice n' warm. [snow_wink]

indeed...

liz was often at her most immaculately turned out during this era.

as i recall when she asked an[spoiler](supposedly)unconscious paul stoddard "what would have made you think, even for a minute, that i wanted you back?"[/spoiler] she was dressed, coiffed and jeweled to perfection which made an already virtuoso scene that much more creamy!

and although it seems disloyal to the massive beehive liz wore during the early years i think i liked "levializ's" hairdo the best.

perhaps i'm just imagining this but during leviathan i could swear julia and/or elizabeth wore brooches or some other pieces of jewelry that looked like snakes.

which i thought was some sort of symbolism because the leviathan alter had snakes on it and wasn't the creature itself supposed to be snakelike?

at any rate i love that regardless of what else is going on everyone is always properly accessorized.the ladies of collinsport had their priorities!

they were dabbling with a friendship between julia and cassandra during the early part of this storyline which for some reason was abandoned for other, less interesting things.

for me cassandra, and 1968 in general, was one of the great lost opportunities on the program.the possibilities of a dark domestic drama with cass at it's center were boundless.it could have been so much fun...

but instead we get the insufferable adam plot thrown in and it spoils everything.

but a julia/cassandra mug does sound charming.

That sounds so cute. I'm kind of jealous, I want a Maggie/Viki tumbler too now.

yeah it's cute...and kind of obsessive and scary.with d.s. the lines get blurred. [snow_silly]

i like carrying it on the subway in the morning because people look at it and try and figure out who it is.

lydia i do believe the mugs are sold separately.i like the sound of a julia/flora tumbler.

i wish i could post pictures but i don't have a digital camera. [snow_clown]

my mom thinks i spend too much money of coffee...

so as part of my christmas gift she got me a big basket from starbucks filled with three pounds of coffee beans, chai tea, biscotti and one of those travel tumblers.
the tumbler has a detachable bottom so you can slide pictures in to "create your very own tumbler".

so i've always wondered what one does with the "collectors postcards" that come with the dvd sets.

and i was thinking about how vicki and maggie shared lots of coffee and tea over the years.why shouldn't i "join" my favorite friends.
so i took the postcards from "the beginnings" dvd sets 1 and 2 of vicki and maggie and sure enough if i slid one in one side and one in the other they fit perfectly!

i like that maggie is wearing her waitresses uniform in the picture because then i can imagine that she had "served" me the coffee.

you know i love my girls. [snow_rolleyes]
