good points all around...

the show can be very contrived.it often asks us to accept things just because the writers(or dan curtis)put something into the script whether it seems believable or not(and i use the term "believable" loosely when it comes to this thing).

however sometimes something that an actor instinctually brings to their performance lends believability to something that becomes greater than what is actually spelled out in the writing.

examples could certainly be joan bennett playing elizabeth as if she were victoria's mother.what joan brought to that lends the situation certainty to many fans even though it never actually gets spelled out in specifics within the scripts.
also of course grayson hall' s decision to play julia as in love with barnabas.she created that on her own before the writing began to imply it without her ever actually coming out and saying it in so many words.yet again fans take it as gospel.

certainly john karlen's tender take on willie's feelings for maggie bring the situation greater poignancy than what the scripts actually call for.

interesting thought about the set...

d.s. was moved to it's own studio at some point but in 1966 i think it was still filmed at an abc studio.

perhaps this luxurious set was built for another program and "lent" to d.s.

the series is quite engaging up to this point.i'm always surprised that this series(as opposed to what it later becomes which is essentially a different show with the same name)failed to catch on in a bigger way.

over the weekend i watched a gorgeous suite of episodes set at the bangor pine.

it's one of the dreamiest sets ever.

the scenes filmed here almost feel like a different show entirely.they employ a different set of musical cues than the gothic sturm und drang heard at collinwood(which i believe is supposed to be the music playing in the restaurant)and it lends the sequence a pleasant "peyton place" type feel.

it is here vicki first meets frank garner.they share a few sweet scenes.considering the types of domineering blowhards she hooks up with in later years it's melancholy to see the buddings of a relationship with a nice, normal guy.sigh.

alexandra moltke still gets me after all these years and here,in a full upsweep, she's radiant.very much the proper soap heroine.

she shares what should have been an especially poignant scene with burke but unfortunately mitch ryan is totally off his game and reads the entire thing directly from the teleprompter.

loved these episodes.

as gothick mentioned kathryn leigh scott always sets up major shop at the fests.

she'll happily autograph your purchases as well(if you care about such things)so if you plan to attend it might be a good time to stock up.

hopefully she'll have some new offerings this year.

getting a bit off-topic but i recently had an interesting chat with actress polly draper who played ellen on the late 1980's series "thirtysomething".

the subject of dvds came up and i remarked that i was surprised that the popular series had not been released.she replied that it's difficult for them to release it because the program's classic babyboomer soundtrack(beatles, stones, etc)means heavy royalty payments to those bands and it would be too expensive.

interesting.

indeed.

the bejeweled hannah stokes was one of the high points of this often maligned storyline which i got a huge kick out of.

i'd like to rewatch it someday.right now i don't have time(i'm in 1966)but i'ts a hoot.

no surprise here.when do the time travel storylines ever follow through with their lead-ups?

1795 plays out vastly different than the description of events barnabas gives to carolyn and vicki and later julia in 1967.1897 and 1840 similarly differ greatly from the clues and mysteries being set up in their run-ups.

characters become popular and change directions.actors leave mid-storyline.ratings climb and plots get extended...

...and,of course as we all know,in the pre-videotape era these episodes were only intended to be watched once.so it might have been a case of the writers simply assuming the viewers would not recall the exact sequence of events as spelled out months earlier.

of course today we all know this thing inside and out and can compare and contrast details ad infinitum but that's certainly not how it was intended to be viewed.

i thought i had seen all of the 1966 episodes but i must have missed a few because last night i watched one i hadn't seen that contained a real gem of a scene...

roger and vicki stop into the blue whale(yes,an odd couple, but it's all part of a ruse)and encounter joe and maggie on their first unofficial "date".

vicki joins them while roger and sam,at another table, get into their usual unpleasantries(pens, manslaughter, bill malloy,blah,blah...).

maggie and joe coo and flirt while vicki, suddenly getting wise to the situation(remember that 1966 vicki was wiser than 1967 and 1968 vicki),gives them both a 2+2=4 glance that's priceless.

anyways roger, left peevish by his run in with evans, returns to the group and abruptly tells vicki that they are leaving he has a headache...but as a parting barb to his niece's betrothed and his date inquires as to whether they had been discussing "the price of fish...or the price of hash?".OUCH!

"mr.collins" really kicks these two lovebirds "downstairs" if you know what i mean!it's quite a loaded exchange.

funny but in later years roger become one of the stalwart "beloved" characters but for the first year he was a douchebag of the highest order.

having recently watched maggie and joe's sour 1968 denouement(orchestrated by a vampire witch and satan's emissary)it's quite bittersweet to see this relationship in it's infancy.what becomes of all of these people! [ghost_shocked]

i've said this before but as much as i adore the supernatural years because the plots become so outrageous the characters become hard to sympathise with.here they seem more like real people and thus are easier to relate to.

perhaps in the name of accuracy it should be noted that the article is archived from 2003.

hence mr.isles, born in 1969(after alexandra left the series),is mentioned as being 34 years old.

what's funny is that hall sort of implies that frid did his career a disservice by refusing to appear in NODS...not exactly oscar worthy cinema.

realistically,i doubt it would have made a difference either way.

literally.today.on the street in new york.at 60th and madison.i ran face to face into marie wallace...

i stopped her("excuse me ma'am"),introduced myself(even though we've met before)and told her what a huge fan i was of her and of dark shadows.

she was so nice.charming in fact.more than willing to spend five minutes chatting on the street with a fan of a forty year old show she appeared in.

i know we're supposed to keep "unconfirmed" information to a minimum but she did tell me she'd be at this year's fest,as well as jonathan frid, and lara parker and kathryn leigh scott too(all i believe have already been announced).she also "thought" john karlen might show up too.

i had a similar encounter with diana millay a few years ago and also spotted donna mckechnie but didn't approach.

funny but i see everybody where i work and am so jaded i don't bat an eye but i returned slightly giddy after my encounter with ms. wallace. [easter_rolleyes]

with such a great regular cast it's strange that the writers felt that they needed to come up with a new monster,or gimmick,or time travel element every few months.

there was so much great material right there in front of them every day.
