brrrr mysterious...

summer in maine.better get out that green felted wool coat and head to the diner for some hot, burned, stale coffee.

and when you get home don't forget to get the fire blazing and curl up under a nice warm afghan with a brandy. [_snowman_]

it happened yet again...

barbara blackburn(1991 carolyn)came into the store where i work and i was so bold as to say hello and introduce myself as a fan.

she was very nice and we had a pleasant,if brief, chat about her work on the '91 series.

one thing she did say was that dan curtis tried to follow too closely the plot of the original series(he was "in love" with it)without "updating it"(whatever the heck that means)and that perhaps for that reason it "bombed"(her word not mine).

but she did seem to have gotten a kick out of the experience and said that she had recently seen joanna going(victoria).

nice.

i've been watching the late 1966 episodes and something suddenly struck me about the closing credits...

specifically some of laura collins introductory episodes.while diana millay is clearly the "star" of the episodes in question, with major screen time going to kathryn leigh scott and david hennessy(alexandra moltke,of course, gets her own ending credit),it is david ford as sam evans who gets the first credit despite his relatively minor role in these eps.

in other words if joan bennett(who, again of course, gets her won starring credit)is not in a particular episode does the next adult male in line "star" in that episode according the credit run?certainly it can be argued that grayson hall, lara parker and other actresses owned particular episodes but, simply by being women did they have to play second banana to the boys in the cast?was there some good old fashioned male chauvinism in play here?

the episodes i'm watching are also from the "my name is victoria winters" era where alexandra recites the opening voiceover whether or not she actually appears in the episode itself.there were several in laura's opening eps where she does not and i'm wondering if they actually made alexandra come into the studio to read a thirty second voiceover or if the producers knew she was off for a few days allowed her to "prerecord" them in advance and were thus inserted into the episodes later?

does anyone know?

they do some quick revisions with mrs. johnson's cooking skills...

when carolyn first suggests that elizabeth hire her her excellent cooking is a strong selling point...and please, please don't forget that she made her own fresh mayonnaise.

however the tides quickly turn and suddenly mrs. j.'s cooking is the subject of much mockery and derision and is apparently all around lousy.

hmmmm...

and over at the diner what's with the running gag about maggie's old, burnt, stale coffee?like it's that hard to put on a fresh pot.

do we really feel comfortable saying that roger "dated" vicki?

i've been watching 1966 and the idea of that sort of gets thrown around for a few weeks, like so many red herrings, without actually coming into fruition.

apart from a trip to the cannery and an excruciating night at the blue whale(where roger was simply involving vicki to mask other motives)i can't really recall a "date".

b.t.w nice to have you back luciaphile.

last weekend i picked up at the flea market three dark shadows gold key comics and a 'monsters'  magazine from 1974 that profiled vampires and featured on the cover barnabas and an article on the series.

i paid between five and six dollars each for them and they're in good(not mint)condition.does that sound like a deal?

the gold keys are,as everyone knows, super weird and bear no relation plotwise to what was happening on the program itself.among the plotlines "the sorcery of ancient egypt calls to barnabas-OBEY!" and "pirates who have the secret of eternal life condemn barnabas to ETERNAL DOOM!".yikes!

from what i can tell only barnabas, julia, quentin, liz, roger, willie and professor stokes make it to comic form.oh,and a red haired angelique often referred to as "cassandra".

the 1974 'monsters' article, written by a fan, contains the usual mistakes when the plot is being summarized in short form.among the more glaring errors are that, for the first several months,no one including the viewers, actually knew that barnabas was a vampire and that it was merely "hinted" at(ie.never appearing during the daylight,no mirrors at the old house)and that his first victim was carolyn(who,of course was not bitten until several months into the storyline)completely omitting the maggie evans plot the kicked the barnabas era off.

weird.

gothick...

i'm imagining television sets in all the rooms at collinwood.

somehow i think liz would have been a fan of "the secret storm".the characters seemed so familiar to her.down the hall i can see carolyn and vicki frugging to "where the action is".i believe that "the french chef" premiered in 1966 and poor mrs.johnson was always trying to master boeuf bourguignon and coq au vin but all she could ever come up with was that lousy new england boiled dinner. that's almost as good as adam...and later tom jennings...standing outside vicki's window, then walking right in,even though it had been very clearly established(unless she was abruptly demoted to downstairs servants quarters)that her bedroom was on the second floor. [ghost_rolleyes]

another genius mrs. johnson sequence...

after brazenly smoking cigarettes at the breakfast table(!)david sneaks off with her stuff to bring to matthew down at the old house.

later when mrs. j accuses david of stealing them "master" collins puts her in her place with "should you be smoking while you work?" and finally "if i wanted cigarettes i would just buy them". zwing!

these episodes(120-121)also bring an answer to a long held mystery...just what is the exact nature of the collinwood kitchen/breakfast area/solarium? here, for perhaps the only time,we actually see a stove! mrs. j shuffles over to it to fetch herself a fresh cup of joe.

Current Talk '09 I / the old house exteriors
« on: June 04, 2009, 03:29:07 AM »
sorry i'm feeling chatty tonight.

again i've been watching the 1966 episodes.

i had forgotten how cool the episodes were where they filmed exteriors of the old house and worked the storylines around the filmed material.these episodes, especially the one where josette steps out of her portrait and runs around the columns outside, were for me the first "goosebump" episodes when i first watched.one can sense the program's evolution into what it becomes.

the exteriors of the town of collinsport, the inn and such, are cool but here is where the mythology starts.

it looks like for these early episodes that they sent alexandra, kathryn, nancy, david hennesy and thayer david out to newport,RI for the shoot however...

how "goosepimply" would it have been to have shots of barnabas, willie, julia or maybe angelique lurking about in the darkness outside the old house?

once barnabas came onto the scene, and it was decided that the old house would be the main location for his storyline,i wonder why jonathan, john karlen, grayson hall etc. weren't sent out there for some location shooting?it was only a few months later.it would have been so effective.

i've been watching the 1966 episodes...

of immense amusement to me are mrs.johnson's introductory scenes and,in particular, the scene where she first arrives at collinwood and is greeted by a surly matthew morgan.

because between, you know, the obsessive and homicidal caretaker, the vindictive and vengeful spying housekeeper and the snoopy and recently ghost spotting governess it's no wonder this place is going to hell in a handbasket!

is it possible for the collins family to hire responsible, not crazy, not troublemaking help that creates way less work and drama or is this part of the curse? [ghost_wacko]

i didn't want to start a new thread for this but yesterday i spotted an ancient abe vigoda crossing the street.

good grief how old is this man!? wasn't he already old as dirt when he played that silversmith(ezra braithwaite was it?)forty years ago?

i'm surprised carl's death has such resonance with fans.

1897 is a time travel storyline, which is in effect "temporary",and the characters that populate it are, accordingly,"disposable" in a way.

they are created to be eventually killed off.true 1897 lasted longer than the other storylines set in the past but aficionados know that most of the major characters will be six feet under by the time it winds down.

for me it's nowhere near as shocking than if barnabas had killed one of the "real" present time characters like willie or maggie evans or mrs.johnson.that would have been shocking.

no matter how old,or young for that matter, joan is in a given film as soon as she opens her mouth all i hear is "liz". [ghost_rolleyes]
