you're right mysterious.

it must be something of a retroactive description. in the larger sense willie does function as barnabas' handyman. i've just been watching the early episodes and as of episode 210 he was anything but.

since the "regular" dvd releases as opposed to the "beginning" dvd releases skips past the early jason/willie plot and jumps right into the barnabas arrival perhaps they thought it wasn't worth confusing the viewer with too much of willie's backstory since from that point on he basically functions within the context of what's happening with barnabas.

i've been gradually updating my collection to the dvd format...

i just bought collection 1(of the regular series not "the beginning")and in the summary of episode 210 willie loomis is described as being a "handyman".

now our willie was a drifter,a creep and a lowlife when he showed up in collinsport but a handyman? not so much.

do you think the textwriters got the original willie confused with the willie from the 1991 series who was something that sort?

that's the only thing i can think of. [snow_huh]

the show has a funny habit. when a storyline is over it's over. it rarely gets mentioned again.

after her storyline laura is never referred to by name again(except during 1897 which is a totally different set of characters). if she's even referenced her name isn't spoken. during the part of the early barnabas storyline where david fears barnabas liz says that she hasn't seen david so frightened since "his mother" tried to come back. during the cassandra storyline when liz objects to roger and cassandra's hasty marriage she reminds roger that technically he's "still married" but again laura's name is not uttered.

think about adam. he dominates the plot for most of 1968 but when he's gone he,and all of the destruction he caused, are never even referred to and the quentin storyline gets underway as if adam(and eve)never existed.

even major, major characters like victoria and joe. when they're gone everyone acts like they were never even part of the story before. does maggie ever even mention her former fiances name?

it's almost like they just wanted to march forward with whatever plot was at hand without alot of tethers to what came before.

fame certainly but fortune? not so much.

from what i've come to understand the cast was not wildly overpaid.

david selby and the gang came to fame in a much more innocent and less technologically advanced time. in the pre-internet,pre-blogging,pre-tweeting time...when one's every move and utterance was known around the world instantly...it was probably much easier to maintain a normal life even given the sort of popularity selby achieved at his peak.

the program was taped in new york, and those kids-that-ran-home-from-school parked themselves outside the studio, but otherwise it was probably not hard for him to move about.

and in those days the press in general was much more tight-lipped(much of the cast was apparently homosexual and that was certainly never even suggested). dcp arranged interviews and photo sessions with "tiger beat" and the soap weeklies but otherwise the cast was probably not fodder for much news. we're talking soap stars not the beatles.

still mr. selby does seem like a nice, well adjusted guy.

Gothick, it was The Secret Storm that JC appeared on briefly replacing Christina.

i wish that "the secret storm" was available on dvd. the dark shadows connection runs deep.

joel crothers, clarice blackburn, diana millay, conard fowkes and james storm(perhaps others as well)were all castmembers.

for me joan crawford has a rather "hard" presence that would have made her too rigid in the role of liz.

bennett could be icy and imperious but also possessed a sense of vulnerability and warmth that made the character so complex and allowed the audience to care about her.

crawford would have been a great bit of stunt casting but i'm glad the part was cast the way that it was.

i thought seaview had alot of intersting potential too.

but wasn't barnabas somehow pivotal to that? was the idea originally for seaview to go forward after barnabas was killed off?

fascinating...

i find it quite stunning that as late as october/november 1967 the barnabas character(and frid)still had an out date when by that point he clearly owned the show.

i mean after this what were they going to do? go back to a cannery storyline?

for me 1967 is THE year. when i first watched this thing through a few years ago i watched those episodes as if under a spell. i was mesmerized. it felt so fresh and organic and uncontrived.

when the program returns from the 1795 sequence and the adam storyline takes over the tone becomes too adolescent and gimmicky.

but here...the seance, the costume party, the night of the storm when vicki spends the night at the old house...for me this is where the magic is.

how terribly sad...

another d.s. passing. mr. fowkes was a nice addition to the show's early days. i just rewatched the laura collins story and was reminded of that. frank was sweet with vicki.

we are fortunate those who got to meet mr. fowkes at the brooklyn fest(i believe his only one)in 2006.

ms. parker's last stab at literature "the salem branch" was so utterly, astoundingly, breathtakingly awful it soured me to any of her future novel writing endeavors.

i'll sit this one out.

yes grayson hall and lovelady powell were certainly "cut from the same cloth" as they say. i can see powell in the doctor hoffman role quite easily.

it would have been nice for an additional appearance of MRS. fitzsimmons but in a rare nod to continuity several episodes later after this subplot is over and the jason mcquire/willie loomis plot is underway maggie tells joe that sam is working on some new paintings for "that art dealer" so perhaps sam got that exhibition after all.

sigh.

shall i take it we are in the midst of yet another vampire "trend".

it seems to pop every few years.

the vampire aspect of d.s. is almost incidental to me. i watch the show for lots of other reasons so i'm not remotely plugged into anything else happening in the vampire "world".

thanks lydia,

for some reason i imagine the young mitch ryan as seeing himself as a rather "serious thespian" and taking himself quite seriously.

i'm trying to picture his reaction when handed the first vampire scripts. probably "what the f***?!?"
