thanks. i think i understand.

i think i'm going to give marie's new cd a listen. for what it's worth over on her facebook page she's promoting it as an "audiodrama" not a "dramatic reading" but i think i'm beating a dead horse. [hall2_wink]

i'm still confused.

since marie's new cd features only her and terry crawford than it's not an "audiodrama" but a "dramatic reading"? is that correct?

is there any attempt at continuity between the two "ranges" or do they function completely separately?

i'm very surprised to hear that there are those unfamiliar with the series but are listening to these readings.

and oh that bangor pine...

it's the creamiest set ever. the wallpaper is to die for.

and alexandra in these eps. hair up. coat draped across shoulders. dreamy. very much the proper soap heroine. [hall2_kiss]

i'm sorry is there a difference within this series of cds between a "audiodrama" and a "dramatic reading"?

i was under the impression they were all being marketed under the audiodrama heading.

love it! [hall2_kiss]

where are all of vicki's sleeveless dresses now? did ABC wardrobing recycle them on other shows? it's strange to think of someone else wearing them. you just know the fabrics were non-biodegradable so they're probably just sitting in some landfill for the next five thousand years.

sabrina stewart actually ended up with one of vicki's coats. [hall2_wink]

i haven't been following these since the first one but marie wallace's new cd is getting great reviews so i might check these out again.

do they function as stand alone stories or are they part of a serialized format? like the television program do they need to be listened to sequentially for them to make sense?

marie says her new story can be listened to on it's own terms but what about the series as a whole?

i picked it up at Border's yesterday. it's very well done.

i must say that kathryn leigh scott is one smart cookie. she turned a few years of her life into an entire mini industry that seems to have supported her rather nicely(judging by those THREE homes). good for her.

DS fans are so loyal that if you were a blue whale extra in episode 63 you could probably work it to your advantage but ms. scott really made the most of it.

i might have to check out those dan curtis movies.

i guess today's slideshow is something of a reminder of just how "evil" barnabas could be.

this is all getting off-topic but i never really thought about a throwdown in the evil department between barnabas and nicholas blair.

in theory blair is worse(especially after they make barnabas "nice")but still he doesn't leave behind the trail of body bags barnabas does. even after he's supposedly 'reformed" he still does majorly crappy things to people like with maggie evans during the adam plot when he was going to use her for the life force.

tough call [devil2]

part of this unintended air of hauteur probably stems from alexandra moltke's impossibly aristocratic carriage. at times she comes off as almost "regal" for a lowly servant girl.

much like joan bennett moltke possessed an impeccable diction(thanks to spence and miss porter's school)that gave the character a rather "patrician" quality.

everyone knows i loves me some vic but i'm watching 1795 again and noticing something i really hadn't before...

the ways she treats nathan forbes at the start of the storyline. yes he comes on strong. yes he seems like something of a rogue. but vicki deals with him the way she always deals with people she finds unsavoury...

be acting haughty and aloof! she's really above and beyond. she gave jason mcquire and willie loomis the victoria winters deep freeze and now lieutenant forbes finds himself himself out in the cold. brrr!

later nicholas blair gets a similar treatment.

i see what's behind writing the character this way(at least at the time): she's a young lady of "quality and virtue". we get it. but really where does she get off!

her attitude once prompted a friend to remark "ooh she's frosty isn't she?".

today's slideshow features one of those DS scenes that gives me chills...

carolyn telling david about her imaginary friend. then david and carolyn hear the message in sarah's music. then vicki hears the wailing of the widows. goosebumps every time!

that it's a black and white kinescope episode only heightens it's sense of bleakness. the overpowering mood of melancholy and despair.

total chills.

is today's slideshow from the infamous "dinner party" ruse that barnabas, julia and professor stokes cook up to get nicholas blair out of the house so barnabas can get in to dispose of a certain man-made lady?

i wonder about this gathering. after the days of the diner(donuts, coffee and roast beef sandwiches only, please)no food is ever seen being consumed and the old house certainly never featured a kitchen or dining room of any sort. so what was to be served at this gathering of intellectuals and sophisticates?

was it passed hors d'oeuvres? b is such a proper gentleman he seems like would have served something really formal like boeuf bourguignon or coq au vin.

magnus makes a good point.

leviathan and 1970 parallel-time were stand alone storylines that were worked into the larger DS canvas.

but starting with 1995 it was clear that they were building up to something big that would likely be set in the past where the program had experienced so much success  before. one can really only appreciate it in retrospect but there it is.

and interesting point about the possibility of KLS as samantha collins and what that would have meant to the endless parade of josette lookalikes. under those circumstances would samantha have been yet another incarnation? how would barnabas have reacted to that when roxanne was on his mind by this point? oh the questions.

and after the brutality with which barnabas first treated maggie in 1967 i could never buy(or stomach)any implied romance between them in future storylines. those images are burned onto my memory bank and just because the character became popular and the writers tried to redeem him doesn't make that go away for me.

interesting about maggie's boyfriend.

the whole "summer of 1970" to me seemed just like a big set up for another trip to the past. what happened in the present was almost beside the point. no "new" plot was introduced that wasn't meant to lead directly into the 1840 storyline. so i'm surprised to hear that a new, self contained storyline for maggie was being considered. wasn't the character sort of back-burnered at that point?

my feelings about roger davis as ned stuart were always "why?".

stuart was a relatively minor character and could easily have been cast using a different actor. so closely on the heels of jeff clark it only added confusion. confusion exacerbated by the fact that nothing was done to differentiate the two characters in terms of appearance or temperment. ned was just nother bossy blowhard.

my impression of the absurd preponderance of roger davis roles has always been that davis must have had a two year contract and the writers/producers needed to write him into the series somehow whether it really made sense or not.
