i must say that certainly no other actor has marketed their time on DS with the same level of "enthusiasm" as kathryn leigh scott.

the promotional videos. the dvd commentaries. the festival attendance. it's obviously been well worth it for her to keep interest in the program high...the better to keep sales of those books and cd's humming. [snow_wink]

did they do grayson's hair differently for the movie?

i don't EVER recall her hair being that big on the series.

ooh i must check this out!

the DS wardrobe is a favorite of mine too.

so joan actually wore the chartreuse caftan after DS??? i'm surprised dcp allowed her to keep it. they probably could have gotten a few more series out of it. [snow_rolleyes]

we totally got channel 56 where i grew up. spent many a saturday afternoon with "creature double feature". wasn't "dale dorman" the continuity announcer.

somehow DS escaped me.

it's funny trying to explain to anyone under 35 what the pre-cable world looked like: the three major networks. a regional PBS station for sesame street and upstairs, downstairs. and a few crappy local/regional "UHF" stations that aired bowling tournaments, old movies and old television shows like DS. i recall the scene vividly.

doesn't the "death" card keep coming up and magda does this tongue role that's just genius. brilliant!

that said dr. peter guthrie did make a nice foil for laura. i just think julia would have been great fun.

whenever the laura collins storyline comes up i always think it's something of a shame it happened before grayson hall joined the cast as dr.julia hoffman.

grayson and diana millay are the queens of the DS showdown and confrontations between the two would have been electrifying. true they got to work together during the 1897 storyline and scenes with laura and magda were fun but having the good doctor go head to head with mrs.roger collins would have been out of sight!

in terms of acting style they're on the same wavelength and would have been perfectly matched.

the laura storyline is filled with electrifying confrontations and her visit with sam evans is also a favorite.

no one does a showdown quite like diana millay and by the time the scene is over you just know poor sam is toast.

brilliant!

contemporaries of mine often remember DS from it's syndicated runs in the 1970's but i actually have absolutely no childhood recollections of it. perhaps it was not syndicated in the new england area where i grew up.

it's sci-fi channel runs in the late 1990's were my first exposure to it.

for some reason i've always thought the character seemed more at home in historical costumery(1795,1897,1840). garbed in "present time" clothing ang looks lovely but somehow slightly off. and that's saying nothing about her attire during her stint as a vampire.

lara's just a few years older than nancy and kathryn but seems almost matronly comparatively in terms of clothing and hairstyles.

« on: January 07, 2011, 10:57:12 PM »
over the years i've gradually been upgrading to the dvd format and a few years ago i sold nearly all my DS tapes to a funky record/book/video store in portland called "strange maine" that specializes in offbeat titles. i think i only got about $150.00 for them but i just couldn't schlep them around anymore.

the only tapes i kept were the laura collins storyline because at the time "the beginning" series had not been released in its entirety and i couldn't bear not to have that storyline should it become unavailable. i ended up completing "the beginning" but still have those tapes around almost out of sentiment. i would sell them if i could get a good deal though.

i say if you get a fair price unload them.

Current Talk '11 I / Re: What Was Your Introduction to DS Fandom?
« on: January 06, 2011, 04:02:58 AM »
my introduction to the series came at a time when the sci-fi channel aired two episodes back to back at i think 11:00pm. this was 1999? 2000 i think?

anyways i'll always remember my first episodes were the ones where david locked victoria in the closed off section of collinwood and she saw the ghost of bill malloy. this action was intercut with a scene at the blue whale where burke and sam sing "what would you do with a drunken sailor" to an amused carolyn.

sometimes i used to watch tv with my landlady and she must have been watching this with me because later she always asked me about joan bennett and "that girl that was locked in the attic".

i loved it from that minute and shortly afterwards i started watching on video from episode one. i'd order two volumes at a time from mpi and it took me years to get through it. in fact when i attended my first fest(brooklyn '03 i think)i had just finished the laura collins storyline and had only just gotten to the barnabas part of the series. diana millay set up her table(books and so forth)early so she was the first one of "them" i had ever met in person and i was just mesmerized. it was the first of several odd exchanges i'd have with diana over the years.

i tried to watch it all the way through but i started to lose interest with the 1840 storyline. i just couldn't get through it. it all got too far away from what i had first started to watch for and i just couldn't muster up much enthusiasm or develop any affection for yet another round up of characters that would mostly end up dead by the end of the storyline anyways. still i might finish it someday.

now i end up watching favorite storylines again in their entirety. i've watched 1966 all the way through twice. the laura storyline three times. 1967 three times. 1968 twice and i'm currently giving 1795 a third viewing. after that i'm not sure which i'll pick. i've only seen 1897 through the summer of 1970 once so i may try and get through that whole segment again and then think about 1840.

it's been great fun(for the most part)and the series actually helped get me through a very difficult period in my life. having this project set for myself(watching the series end-to-end)was comforting. that period is now over but i'll always have a deep fondness for the series for being there at a time when i needed something to cheer me up.

i vote for the brooklyn location. since the event hasn't been held in manhattan in about a decade it seems as though it's become price-prohibitive. [santa_sad]

my mom lives in portland, maine so i'll have to give the "high hat lounge" a look next time i'm there.

the scene with liz walking around with a gun concealed in a gold shopping bag was almost as good as carolyn walking around her own house with a purse during the mcquire nuptuals. [santa_rolleyes]

yes in later years the show becomes something of a boys club with jonathan frid and david selby dominating the proceedings but during the first year the female characters ruled the roost and that was never finer than during the laura collins storyline.

joan bennett and diana millay were perfectly matched. their scenes together will always stand out as series favorites to me.

i always thought it was funny that when vicki was trying to reach her friends from the past she did so by filling the closet with a bunch of sleeveless dresses. nothing could possibly speak victoria winters more. [santa_rolleyes]

i try not to get on a soap box here but the venomousness of "richard's" post is quite stunning and completely out of sync with the tone generally set here.

i'll assume richard since you're new you're somewhat unfamiliar with your surroundings but do you realize how many people you could have... and likely did...offend with your remarks?

i have a news bulletin: DS had and has a huge queer fanbase...present company very much included...and a large contingent at this board. so to throw someone's sexuality around in s sneering way or to use the words "gay" and "diseased" in the same sentence is totally out of line.

another bulletin. the new york based theater community had and has a large number of gays(try not to be too horrified!)many of whom made their way onto the series at some point or another so a significant gay subtext can be read into certain situations of one reads between the lines so to speak. i actually think an exploration of this topic would be fascinating(as a completely separate project from the burton/depp film)and i don't consider myself to be "stupid" or "diseased".

so please take that into consideration and be respectful with your remarks in the future.

"yours truly..."
