MALLOY!

good grief.

the casting of such an obscure, early character...long dead and forgotten by the time that bejeweled hand reached out of the coffin...is definitely a wink-and-a-nod acknowledgment to the fans. a bit of an "inside" joke if you will.

i like it. [hall2_tongue]

it seems as though there's been almost a complete cessation of new information about the film since principle photography ended last week. no new tweets, photos, leaked plot points, etc.

in fact i'll bet that now that the film has gone into the studio for post-production we will see and hear virtually nothing for the next several months until the trailers are released and the promotional work starts.

i'd like to get mrs.johnson tattooed on one arm and a jar of mayonnaise tattooed on the other.

since depp alone earns tens of millions of dollars per film i'm sure 35 million is an enormous underestimation of the movie's total costs. the salaries of the main cast alone probably total more than that.

at the end of the day i'll bet were talking millions in triple digits in terms of the overall production costs.

unfortunately you just know some creep would bring it up...

so mysterious tell me what were the circumstances around your encounter with alexandra? in 1979 she must have been GORGEOUS.

i've met her before at a film screening so last night i was not as discombobulated as one might expect. definitely a commanding presence and also i must add slightly aloof with those she does not know. although i have never brought up DS to her i get the feeling she somehow "senses" the presence of a fan. we must give off some sort of energy she picks up on.

still it was nice to see her.

sorry i didn't post the information about this sooner but it was sort of last minute...

last night i attended a screening of alexandra isles documentary film "hidden treasures" at the orchard house cafe in new york. alexandra was hosting.

the cafe atmosphere gave the event a casual, intimate feel. very good coffee. it was obviously attended by many close friends of alexandra's as she seemed very relaxed and familiar with those in attendance. several of those interviewed for the film...mainly metropolitan employees and benefactors...were also present. after the screening they got up spoke briefly then with alexandra took questions from the audience. i asked about the recent alexander mcqueen exhibit and all replied that it was a wonderful experience for the museum.

as for ms.isles she's still dreamy. taller than i recalled with excellent posture. the hair still vicki-lustous. she has a wonderful carriage and presence and comes across as a very interesting and engaged person. of course i wanted to ask her about the new film but under the circumstances it wouldn't have been appropriate.

i had seen the film a few months ago on PBS but watching it on the "big screen" with those involved present gave it a new vitality. it's actually quite inspiring. if one gets a chance please check it out.

a nice evening.

since i'm apparently reading the tea leaves today...

i have another prediction. i won't "spoiler' it because it's pure speculation but i'm wondering if we're going to get some sort of "cassandra" type situation with roger. her seducing and bewitching him so she get get on the inside at collinwood.

it's just a thought but johnny lee miller doesn't seem like the kind of actor that would have signed onto this project just to be part of the set dressing. his role has to have some "juice" to it, so to speak.

we'll see...

how un-CANNY!

[spoiler]i was just saying to myself this morning: i'll bet angelique owns that other, rival cannery. and lo and behold. we've been given clues. she's already well established in collinsport when the story begins. she's out to destroy liz. certainly her power-pantsuit in the cast photograph screams "lady executrix". there's just not going to be enough time in a two hour movie to have a cannery subplot that doesn't involve barnabas and the rest of the leads.[/spoiler]

i knew it.

a couple more thoughts...

i'm just basing this on the pictures we've seen but it seems like depp, carter and miller are in effect "doing" frid, hall and edmonds respectively. they're not just playing the characters of barnabas, julia and roger in the abstract but very particular actors interpretations of them. on the other hand heathcote and pfieffer aren't "doing" moltke and bennett. they're just playing characters named vicki and elizabeth. does that make sense?

i could be completely off about this but the pictures left that impression.

also after i heard about the additional casting of a "young victoria" i started to think maybe things are getting a bit top-heavy in terms of cast and subplot. there's only so much that can be squeezed into a two hour film that will largely focus on the barnabs character...or is this a robert altmanesque ensemble piece?

with each new photograph i get more excited.

love pfieffer's hair more here than in the earlier group shot. it looks more elaborate and 70's. the mood we're getting from these glimpses is somber, somber, SOMBER. not the bright cartoony world of some of burton's other works. it looks like that's what colleen atwood is going for in terms of the costuming too. DARK. not the visual dissonance of the original series' bright mod clothes juxtaposed against the heavy gothic interiors. just dark. but rich too. i keep recalling depp's GREEN inverness cape. a lush forest green. it look like hits of burgundy and plum are out there too. the early 1970's were something of a grim time if one recalls so all this makes sense visually.

it looks like depp in in 18th century costume for his picture. and the garment looks grimy and worn. shortly after his release, perhaps? the blood of his first victim on his hands?

it's all too much to take in.

well aside from all that i think from about 1968 on the series certainly qualifies as "weird" plotwise as well. just try explaining the later part of the adam storyline or leviathans to the uninitiated and you'll get alot of blank stares. but that's a separate conversation really.

but i know what you mean in terms of this film and i hope it's not excessively "cartoonish" as well. the new cast photo strikes me as having the proper gothic atmosphere but who knows.

1392
there is something misleading about that photograph in terms of depp's appearance. he is 48 years old. no matter how he's lit and made up he can only look so "young" onscreen.

i think it's funny that in some of the polls one of the choices is that depp and burton will make this film "too weird". cause, um, the original series wasn't "weird" at all, right? [ghost_rolleyes]

Current Talk '11 II / Re: DS Character Drawings

love the vicki drawings...

not sure why he's combined her with maggie evans though. they were two completely separate characters.

for me they're very evocative of alexandra so it's funny that besty durkin is his visual inspiration although his reasoning for it are interesting.

for me moltke's presence had gravity and seriousness to it while durkin was just sort of silly. especially given the surrounding context of her period on the series.

stunning development!

we know that "young barnabas" is part of the 18th century sequence but how does a young victoria factor in??? a flashback to the 1950's?

i was just wondering what this victoria's background was since i don't think we've heard the "orphan" word in any of the published character descriptions. is she from collinsport? is the hammond foundling home to make an appearance?

wow. [ghost_shocked]

This is just my opinion but I believe that if it's closed minded to dislike or put down a movie someone has never seen, it should also be closed minded to like or promote a movie someone has never seen. Both are examples of acting on something based on little or no information. Both are jumping to conclusions. Both are wrong. In my opinion.

no one here is "promoting" this movie. we're excited about it. you're not. you've made that abundantly clear. we get it.

again, you're relentless negativity about this project have totally brought down the tone of the board. in fact your distrust of it is beginning to border on obsessive paranoia.

i'm always polite and nonconfrontational at this board but i dread coming to this topic because i know it will littered with your complaints. so now your going to complain that depp and carter look "too much" like the original actors? i thought your fears were that this wasn't going to follow the original closely enough. you're impossible to satisfy.

besides i thought you "no longer cared" or were interested in this project. so why are you still complaining about it daily?

i'm curious. are you going to spend the next eight months until this is released nitpicking it to death or are you going to move on to healthier pursuits? some of us are looking forward to it.
