well that didn't take long...

over on facebook a group of...you guessed it..."real fans" have started a HBC hate group.

how embarrassing and sad.

Another DS 2012 star speaks -

thanks nancy. interesting remarks. [spoiler]some of the "spoilers" we've gotten thus far are promising some casualties. it would already appear that doctor hoffman bites the dust in the new film. so pfieffer's hope for sequels would imply that elizabeth makes it out alive.[/spoiler]

needless to say la scott ends this touching tribute to the OS with a pitch for her new book. she's nothing if not consistent. [santa_rolleyes]

she's certainly turning lemons into lemonade as only she can...one of the new film's lead actresses(not to mention wife of it's director who's been intimately involved with it's production since day one)says some unflattering things about it. so to "set the record straight" so to speak order a book from someone who was onset for two days and will likely appear onscreen for less than five seconds.

her motives and enthusiasm for the series are never entirely altruistic. but i'll give her full credit. she's really maximized her association with DS to it's fullest extent. [santa_wink]

i actually find the storyline to be very imaginative. in fact i think it's the last truly original plot on the series before it starts to devolve into rehashes and retreads.

magnus i'd be willing to bet we come to DS for very, very different reasons and that's what's great about it. there's so much to take away.

for me the supernatural element is almost incidental. i'm not otherwise remotely interested in "the occult". i love the whole weird package. the sets. the music. the costuming. the actors.

for me DS is an atmosphere. an attitude. a mood. sometimes i care for the plot at hand more than others but i'm always sucked into the ambiance.

some of us come to the series for the vampires. others for the hairpieces and squat shoes. it's all fun. [santa_tongue]

i'm sorry but speculating about the state of her marriage and personal life because you don't like her remarks about a movie is really crossing a line.

i'm really enjoying this rewatch...

one thing i like about this storyline is that, for lack of a better word and in terms of DS, it sort of feels "normal". i like the atmosphere at collinwood.

"normal" of course is a relative term but what i mean is that there are not monsters coming out of the woodwork. it is largely about people and on DS after 1968 that is saying something. it is told with a slightly more "adult" sensibility than some other storylines.

yes there is a vampire and a ghost and whatever exactly angelique is here(a witch? sort of?) but there is not some overarching theme about a race of demonic creatures trying to take over the entire earth like there was during the later part of the adam storyline or the leviathan plot.

it's just about the crazy folks in the house up on the hill in their hairpieces and psychedelic prints. that's it. i like that about it.

They did not dress Grayson Hall very well.    I think there's only one suit i liked her in and it was around the Vicki returns from 1795 story line -- brown with lines -- nice and tailored (where Julia is trying to get her to go to sleep).  other than that, she was awfully dressed.

i don't agree with the whole "julia was badly dressed" thing.

her clothing looks dated to contemporary eyes. and some of it, particularly the green tweed suit, gets overworn. but she was a middle-aged woman doctor. what was she supposed to wear?

actually i think she often looks expensively dressed and chic. well-tailored suits, coats and dresses...and she finished each ensemble with a proper handbag and gloves. what's not to love.

Current Talk '11 II / Re: Depp/Burton DARK SHADOWS Spoilers
« on: December 04, 2011, 02:24:12 PM »
carter's spoiler is much more of a plot twist than i thought would be revealed in the situation. i sort of regret reading it now.

[spoiler]still i'm not that surprised. this isn't a series remember. even though some sort of sequels have been suggested there's really nothing to prevent several characters from being killed off in this movie. it's not like they need to go back on air the next day. didn't we hear that angelique would die too? and even another character? i suppose that could be some sort of vicki/josette thing?[spoiler]

i highly doubt depp has the time for a sequel anyways. if it ends up being produced maybe it will focus on the younger characters.or perhaps some sort of quentin storyline.

my computer is very slow and it would take hours to download the clip...

could someone post, in the spoiler box of course, what is being revealed?

definitely mixed messages(as usual)coming from this cast member...

it's a "soap opera" but also very "subtle" and hopefully "funny". that's alot going on.

nothing about the OS could really be construed as deliberately "funny" subjectwise. it was all pretty deadly serious. yes we could all chime in on a few droll drawing room scenes with roger and liz or julia at her most sardonic and say that it's "funny" but in general the tone was not comedic and we know it.

what COULD arguably be described as being "funny" as we all know is the series' much heralded "camp" value: the flubbed lines. the blatant teleprompter readings. the over the top performances. the dated costuming. the naive and technically primitive special effects.

THAT'S what carter seems to be channelling in some of her remarks about "really bad soap operas". we'll see. i'm still very excited and intrigued by it all but i think some serious camp is coming our way.

incidentally all of these remarks make most of the spoilers we read awhile back...which were quite serious sounding...seem increasingly unlikely. that's seeming like a fraud.

i actually like the "rebecca" redo. it's so blatantly derivative it's stunning but it's fun. it's hard to beat "hoffman".

the jeckyl and hyde plot i could have easily done without although elizabeth eis is alot of fun. and don't get me started on the liesure-suited snoozefest that is the damien edwards subplot. talk about filler.

if nothing else lara parker is really given the opportunity to shine and take center stage since she was not part of the movie shoot and was available to be fully showcased in this storyline. ang spent so much time in period costume she looked lovely in the parallel-time couture as outrageous as some of it was.

mysterious...

i see why you moved/merged the 'bazaar' thread into the main topic but unless i'm missing something the content of the post is gone.

it's unclear what i was talking about. [hall2_huh]

I wonder if Hannah Stokes was meant to be the parallel version of Mrs. Johnson. Though Paula Lawrence certainly did some good work as the character, it does seem to be a good fit for Clarice Blackburn

since clarice didn't appear as mrs.johnson in HODS(the part was recast)filmed at the same time one can assume she must have had some other commitment.

unfortunately after her stint as minerva trask in 1897 blackburn's presence on the series became greatly diminished with the exception of her "1995" appearance.

as versatile as blackburn was i don't see her as the flamboyant hannah stokes. there was a sourness and seriousness to all of her roles that feels at odds with the eccentric hannah. still it could have been an interesting part for her to take on.

paula lawrence was alot of fun in the role. i wish she had stuck around longer. there is something of an abruptness to her departure. a hastiness. she ended up being rather underused.

Current Talk '24 I / a "bazaar" reference
« on: November 26, 2011, 06:36:24 PM »
it looks like we've got an "inside man(or woman)" on the editorial staff at Harper's Bazaar...

the december issue has a "hot list" of 12 "need-to-know, must see, hear and read moments" of the upcoming year.

among such fashionable entries as a louis vuitton exhibit in paris, an elsa schiaparelli/prada show at the metropolitan, damien hirst and keith harring gallery exhibits in london and new york and most spectacularly a cecil beaton photography exhibit to celebrate the "diamond jubilee" of queen elizabeth ll's coronation at the victoria and albert museum in london is the release of DARK SHADOWS(we're number 10).  they even feature the cast photograph.

now that's some SWELL company we're keeping! [hall2_wink]

let's not forget that at the end of the day this film is still something of a gamble...

"we" of course will go see it as will diehard depp fans and perhaps fans of the vampire genre but the great masses might not be lining up the the multiplex to see a remake of an old soap opera.

depp and company might have worked for considerably less than they would have earned in something of the blockbuster category. certainly less than he makes for the 'pirates' franchise.
