i would also anticipate that this film will have a huge afterlife in the DVD market.

especially if it contains deleted material that helps flesh some of it out.

it's the kind of trippy thing that could sustain it's own fanbase. i can see college-age kids getting stoned and watching it. [ghost_rolleyes]

it's not really striking me as a "flop".

i know lots of people...not people in fandom either...who went to see it. most of them enjoyed it. without the baggage and expectations "we" have for it it's probably two hours of harmless fun.

considering how obscure the source material is...a 45 year old soap opera...it seems to be holding it's own.

has anyone posted this article from 'new york' magazine?

http://nymag.com/print/?/movies/reviews/dark-shadows-2012-5/index1.html...

it looks back at the series with some fondness, the usual inaccuracies(who knew barnabas and julia hid adam in a closet before he disappeared forever?), and the typical commentary on the show's bloopers, "nonsensical" plotting and "torturous" pacing.

still i think the author likes it.

he speaks of the film(a "camp travesty")not so well. [ghost_blink]

indeed i think that parker is trying to work her stories into the framework or series continuity. not a new or different spin on the tale as burton/depp have openly done. at least that's how she promotes them.

my original point is that with this book, the audiodramas, the comics and now the film there are oodles of variations and reworkings of the same source material floated around right now that all tell different stories.

it's overwhelming. so like the audiodramas, which i also do not care for, i'll sit parker's book(s) out.

i'll def be skipping this one...

apart from disliking 'the salem branch' intensely i'm currently still trying to absorb the changes made to story continuity via the film.

i really can't cope with another "diagonal", or "parallel", or "alternate" DS universe at the moment. [ghost_blink]

thanks midnite,

the train scene was lovely. i just found the "magtoria" angle discombobulating.

i can't decide "who" that character really is.

sorry i didn't mean how many people were in the theater but more what it meant that i went to see it again after the negative reaction i had to the film's climactic scene the first time around.

i knew it would be quiet at that time which is one of the reasons i went.

i'm not sure what this means but i just came from seeing it a second time...

a funny 6 o'clock showing near where i work with only about 15 people in the theater.

still processing.

same here,

i didn't love it. it certainly wasn't a bore.

i enjoyed a large chunk of the movie. the ending just sort of ruined it for me.

Just wondering why she felt the need to invent another identity in the first place. Was she trying to elude her parents? Afraid of being sent back to the mental institution?

perhaps her past was so painful she just wanted a "fresh start" and thought a new identity that didn't carry all the emotional baggage was the way to go.

that was very weird and i noticed it too. don't you have to give a name when you apply for a job? and references? where was she living between her escape from windcliff and collinwood?

speaking of windcliff now it does make sense as to why her hairdo and fashion sense are sort of early 1960's.

true,

the film was in the end NOT really a comedy per se.

and certainly not along the lines of something like "love at first bite".

that ad campaign didn't do anybody any favors.

as deeply as i despised the climactic scene i can't consider it a "betrayal" of the OS because you just know if can curtis had had the budget to stage a similar scene on the series he would have. curtis was not "above" anything.

in later years he seemed to develop a sentimentality about the series' "mythology". hence the tone of the 1991 series was more serious and reverent to it than alot of what happened on the OS. no adam and no leviathans. lots of damsels in diaphanous sleepwear and loose curls.

but on the OS he wasn't above and beyond trying just about anything. often to the point where the storylines made absolutely no sense.

i will say that the caroyln "reveal" was not something he would have gone for or approved. curtis liked his heroines unsullied. for me it was the one part of the film i found unforgivable.

before i sound TOO critical perhaps i'll backtrack a bit...

for me the film was just bookended negatively. the "magtoria" compromise left me disengaged out of the gate. and the climax was so stupid it sort of ruined the rest of it for me.

but a large chunk of the middle portion of the film was, as i said, harmless entertainment. if it had started and ended differently i might have enjoyed it alot more.

i just couldn't get past those two story developments. [ghost_tongue]
