Happy Birthday, Dark Shadows- take comfort that I will always be older than you... but not always as entertaining.
I took Jennifer's cue, and watched a few DS episodes on its birthday (ones with Chris Jennings/Don Briscoe... and special bonus, Julia Hoffman/Grayson Hall wearing her nightie in 2 back-to-back episodes).

Cassandra was off the charts. Definitely a fave of mine. Her storyline with Barnabas and the Dream Curse gang brought my older sister to DS in 1968, and 38 years later, the madness continues. Thanks, Lara. Thanks, sis.
I always gave Cassandra 10 extra points for being the first to actually blurt out, "I think she's (Julia) in love with him (Barnabas)," and the wigged witch had only been a resident of Collinwood for one day when she made that comment!
Did Angelique, as Cassandra, actually have to... uh, er... "make love" with Roger during her masquerade, or was she always able to drug his nightcaps and prevent unwanted, amorous advances? Love her or hate her, the girl made major sacrifices in the name of revenge.

Current Talk '04 I / Re: Tom Jennings... YOU ... WILL ... RISE!!!
« on: June 23, 2004, 06:45:37 PM »
I once wrote a parallel time story where PT Julia was actually "married" to dreamy (and non-vampire-in-this-version) Tom Jennings, and somehow, the two of them were in charge of Collinwood.  Then I scribed one where PT Julia was married to Barnabas, but he wound up in a coma, so our favorite redhead was enjoying the rakish pleasures Chris Jennings had to offer. Somehow, it all seemed plausible, for as Gothick pointed out, the Grayson Hall/Don Briscoe chemistry was most evident in their scenes together.
As it was, Tom Jennings-vampire finally gave Julia someone besides Barn to lust after; then Julia was Chris Jennings' pusher ("Dr. Hoffman, I need more of those sleeping pills to get through the night"), secret keeper, and hypnotist ("Find the center, Chris...") - and she ultimately saved him from strychnine poisoning (did she apply "mouth to mouth resusciation" in that episode? Go Grayson if so!).

DON BRISCOE IS BACK!!!
And yes, the scene in Joe's hospital room, where Julia mistakes Chris for her ex-vampire-boy-toy Tom is a DS classic. And then moments later, Julia's sharing a ride to Collinwood with the mysterious young stud-cum-wolf. That Dr. Hoffman could be rattled one minute, then fearless the next. The Jennings eye-candy spell could not be denied.

Current Talk '04 I / Re: Jonathan Frid Bloopers
« on: June 03, 2004, 11:44:47 PM »
There's a great Frid blooper in the episode where Elizabeth has summoned Maggie Evans to Collinwood as the new governess. It's a scene in the Drawing Room, where Joe and Maggie are seated, listening to Barnabas relate how Vicki disappeared into the past with Peter Bradford. Frid must have forgotten a nice chunk of dialogue, as there is this awkward silence after a few bungled lines, and then (mercifully) KLS lets out a sigh, and nonchalantly changes the subject - as if disappearing governesses are just another drop in the bucket.

Current Talk '04 I / Re: DS ACTORS ON OTHER DAYTIME SERIALS
« on: June 03, 2004, 11:25:36 PM »
i'm surprised to see how many actors d.s. actors appeared on "the secret storm".what was it about?did d.s. actors share storylines there?is it on soapnet?i'd love to see anything diana millay's in.
THE SECRET STORM was one of those dark, overly melodramatic soaps full of organ music and over-the-top characters (Diana Millay played, best to my knowledge, the neurotic girlfriend of a Mafia drug-dealer - but by the time her character, Kitty, was written off [she had shot and killed someone], the role was taken over by actress Diane Ladd).
The opening credits were similiar to "Dark Shadows," with the crashing waves over the ocean rocks. Joel Crothers and Clarice Blackburn were on the show during the same period - and in one article, it was mentioned how Clarice, after being killed off on "Secret Storm," returned for a day as a ghost, and that same week, showed up on DS during the 1995 storyline, where she was also bumped off as Mrs. Johnson.
STORM ended its run in 1974 - and is best remembered as the serial where JOAN CRAWFORD substituted for her ailing daughter, Christina, for a week in 1968. My theory is Joan C. was inspired by Joan Bennett's willingness to try daytime.
Could you imagine Joan CRAWFORD as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard??!! Scary thought.

Current Talk '04 I / Re:DS ACTORS ON OTHER DAYTIME SERIALS
« on: May 30, 2004, 07:11:46 AM »
Nice research and recollections! Now using the SIX DEGREES (OR LESS) OF SEPARATION from DS and these other serials, I offer these shocking headlines, and then the stories behind them:

"JOE HASKELL GIVEN LSD BY ZIRA FROM PLANET OF THE APES!"
Actually, Joel Crothers' character (Miles on The Edge of Night) had a hallucinogenic slipped into his water cooler by movie actress Kim Hunter (who played Zira in 'Apes,' but also portrayed demented Nola Madison on 'Edge'). His freak-out scenes were reminiscent of when Dr. Hoffman prepared to send poor Joe off to Wyndecliff - pass the hypodermic needle, please.

"SABRINA STUART MURDERS TOMMY LEE JONES!"
On One Life To Life, Lisa Richards' character, Susan, a lovelorn nurse, accidentally shot and killed Tommy Lee Jones' character, the adulterous Dr. Mark Toland, in a struggle for the gun at a motel on the outskirts of town. Later, Susan was run over by a car and died in a dramatic finale. As Sabrina, she had better times with a wolf for a boyfriend.

"JEB HAWKES ENTERS THE POLITICAL RING!"
Fans of General Hospital may recall Chris Pennock as slimy Mitch Williams, who used bitchy but wealthy Tracy Quartermaine to fund his political campaign, while also carrying on a bold affair with Susan Moore, the town tramp. Mitch eventually got the heave-ho from both ladies, though neither had a Widow's Hill from which to throw him.

"ROGER COLLINS AND THE COLLINS FAMILY LAWYER, MR. GARNER, WED THE SAME WOMAN!"
Yes, gang, on All My Children, both Louis Edmonds (as Langley) and Hugh Franklin (as Dr. Charles Tyler) had the distinction of being married to Ruth Warrick's indomitable Phoebe, though mercifully not at the same time.

"ARISTEDE IS DIXIE CARTER'S BROTHER!"
On The Edge Of Night, Michael Stroka played a character named Quentin (coincidence, or perhaps homage to DS?), who was the brother of Brandy, played by Designing Woman Dixie Carter. Sadly, Quentin (like most characters on 'Edge') wound up murdered, but his character wasn't really a bad guy - unless one dislikes psychiatrists who chase married women.

Any other storyline memories of our DS faves in other roles out there? Don't be shy.

Current Talk '04 I / Re:1966 Season
« on: May 27, 2004, 07:10:21 PM »
I enjoyed the pre-Barnabas episodes and credit their establishing the appeal of characters like Vicki, Elizabeth, Carolyn, David and Roger . By the time Barnabas arrived, we could suspend our disbelief of the vampire gimmick, as we had grown to care about the human characters, and were intrigued by how this "cousin from England" would interplay in their Gothic world.  Perhaps if the series started out with the supernatural, audiences wouldn't have bought it, because we'd have been preoccupied with the premise, rather than have the leisure to focus on the dysfunctional Collins family, as individuals, whom we grew to know and love in 1966.

I just found a December 1966 TV Guide that shows DARK SHADOWS on at 10:30AM! Its competition was CONCENTRATION game show, the JOHNNY GILBERT Variety Show, reruns of BEVERLY HILLBILLIES or BACHELOR FATHER, and ROMPER ROOM! Ah, the 60's!

As for David Ford (Sam Evans), he popped up on SEARCH FOR TOMORROW in 1973, playing a psychotic, murdering magazine editor named Carl Devlin.  See what happens to people who leave Collinwood??!!

Current Talk '04 I / Re:Angelique..why do people LIKE this woman?
« on: April 07, 2004, 08:05:21 PM »
I believe Lara Parker's secret to success in her electric portrayal of Angelique can be found in a comment made by actress Patty McCormack, who was in town a few years back, commenting on how she (Patty) approached the role of murderous pig-tailed Rhoda from "The Bad Seed":
"I didn't play Rhoda like she was bad - I played her like she was 'right' !"
Lara Parker seemed to approach Angelique in a similiar manner - and many of us applauded her because she'd been rejected/hurt by love, and we can all identify with that emotion.
Gothick mentioned the famous Barnabas/Cassandra showdown scene - I've noted that episode in a previous post as my first DS episode, so perhaps Lara's characterization reeled me in (though I was equally impressed with Frid and Grayson Hall, and later smitten with Don Briscoe).

Don, you are one cool dude - you portrayed both an apprentice vampire "and" a cursed werewolf with great passion and verve, and your fans continue to enjoy your legacy.
Hope you had a great birthday - Peace and best wishes from Sandor

Lord knows Barnabas never vacuumed the living room carpet in the Old House - so when Elizabeth stood up, she probably had cobwebs clinging to her Ohrbach's robe. She escaped from Wyndecliff wearing that??? Amazing.

Connie, you're awesome. Great shot of Briscoe! Where did you find it? I'm heading over to the mausoleum to look for Tom (or Chris) now!

584
Good point, Julia99-
I have to say, Don Briscoe's Tom Jennings added some much needed spice to the Julia/Barnabas relationship - here was a young, studly vampire (Briscoe) lusting after Julia's blood, and while ex-vamp Barn was genuinely concerned for Julia's welfare (for both personal and professional reasons) , he must have thought - subconsciously - "Hey, there's a new dead guy in town, and he's got his fangs in MY Julia! I can't go for that (no can do)."
Perhaps if the writers played up the Chris/Julia chemistry more during the Leviathan storyline, Barnabas' jealousy could have been included as a factor in his wanting to defeat "Jeb and The Heavy Breathers."  Just a thought.

10 POINTS FOR MIDNITE (yes, Selby-holics can always play with the Briscoe-holics: it's all about family), and a BONUS 5 POINTS for mentioning the "Joe's 'Double Briscoe' Dream in his jail cell" episode. Excellent, Midnite.
Well, I had the "Jennings-a-thon," featuring episodes where Tom first bites Dr. Julia Hoffman - and I say, move over Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft in "The Graduate", because the sultry chemistry between the stud pup vampire Tom and our mature, tough but vulnerable Julia makes the screen sizzle when lily white necks and Don Briscoe's hungry fangs become one.
