I'd read that Diana Millay was pregnant during her first run as "Laura" in these episodes. Wonder if her over-the-top expression involved some morning sickness.

Polls Archive / Re: Three Most Favorite Grayson Hall Characterizations
« on: December 11, 2004, 07:15:14 PM »
I cast my vote for Magda, Dr. Hoffman and PT Hoffman. Though, it was tough to narrow it down to 3. Grayson played all her roles with such relish.
My favorite lines from Grayson that come to mind:

(as MAGDA, to the doomed Quentin): "You HAVE no future..."
(as DR. HOFFMAN, in a rattled moment): "You always win, don't you, Barnabas?!"

Current Talk '04 II / Re: Voice Overs
« on: December 09, 2004, 06:54:41 PM »
I'd read somewhere that the actor doing the voice-over not only had to be in that day's episode, but their character couldn't be in the opening scene (though this rule was bent a few times, particularly with Alexandra Moltke). Grayson gets my vote for "best voice-overs." Whenever I heard her distinctive husky tones at the beginning, I thought, "Cool! Doctor Hoffman's in today's show, so something really juicy's bound to happen."
As for the text of the voice-overs, they're tough to write on a daily basis (basing this observation on some fan-fiction I've written in the past). Common words in the intro included "terror," "death," "fear," "darkness," and "the great house of Collinwood."
Imagine starting your average day with an obligatory "voice over."  Love it! Try it.

Current Talk '04 II / Re: Any opinions on Anita Bolster
« on: December 09, 2004, 01:20:54 AM »
I agree with the Ghost of Sarah Collins: Anita (Bathia Mapes) was great in the role - blooper or not, and methinks the person who yelled out her line (rather than allow the actors to stumble through it) exercised the impulse due to the actress' advanced age. Ageists on DS... humph!!

Love MB's recollections of THE EDGE OF NIGHT - I watched that one too during the DS years, and its "presented live" telecasts gave it an "edge" (no pun intended) similiar to Dark Shadows. It also had some "spooky" elements (remember the insane woman, Stephanie, who quoted Macbeth, sent spiders and poisoned chocolates to a character named Nicole, and crept around wearing a stocking over her head? Shades of Angelique vs. Josette to be sure).

Thank you, Castle Bee. I'm on my way to the site. Briscoe will not be forgotten, thanks to DS and Don's fans, and all the cool people associated with this forum.

Looking forward to the dish from David Henesy.  He mentioned in a phone interview with KLS that he was good buddies with Don Briscoe (albeit he also noted Don's penchant for being in an "altered state" right before his werewolf transformations). Now that Don has passed on, I hope David and other DS actors will break their guarded silence about Briscoe, and offer some thoughtful and fun anecdotes about working with him.
May Henesy also go easier on our beloved Grayson in subsequent recollections. Perhaps now he sees where she may have been coming from with her maternal protectiveness and candor. Wonder if David, a known prankster on the set, ever absconded with Grayson's "Magda" wig, or perhaps he stole her cigarettes (as he'd done with Joan Bennett). I could see her getting irked about that.

Pepe in a pilgrim hat: my Thanksgiving is complete!
Thank you, Heather, for inspiring a holiday viewing of Grayson in "Satan In High Heels."
Each time Pepe takes a drag from her cigarette, I'll pour on more gravy goodness.
Interesting how Julia was quite "Pepe"-ish in attitude during the episodes that led up to her discovery of Barnabas' secret.

Hang in there, Connie -
nothing unusual about what you're going through.  After a spell of DS-burn-out, one way I get rejuvenated is to initiate a "DS virgin" to the fold (watching a fresh face react to the Barnabas/Julia chemistry is always rewarding). Or better yet, someone who hasn't seen the show since 1970, until a trusty MPI tape is brought forth from my collection. And when they see Don Briscoe and say, "Oh, yeah, I always thought he was sexy..." the fever of this unique show returns for me.
Give it time. We freaks will be here to welcome you back when you're ready.
Love always, Sandor

Jerry Lacy:  He's handsome I guess in a Peter Jennings sorta way.

Better that he were handsome in a "Tom or Chris" Jennings sorta way.  Sigh. I regress.

Thanks for the scoop, J-C.  Geoffrey Scott, eh? Didn't his character on "Dynasty" get thrown off the penthouse balcony by a man in Alexis drag?!  Bet he yearned for better days trying to set Angelique ablaze, or tumbling off Widow's Hill without assistance from a cue card.

Jean-Claude North, you stole my projected new avatar! But hey, I can't fault your good taste. Yours or Jennifer's (her Briscoe avatar pic is in glorious color - post more often, Jen!).
For those in search of other rare photos displaying Don's gorgeous face and soulful eyes, run (don't walk) to your nearest used magazine store (or E-Bay) and hunt for the following issues of 16 MAGAZINE:
October 1969 - Feature article on Don at his NYC pad (shirtless poses and a peek inside his mini-refrigerator)
March 1970- Don is named "Sweetheart of the Month"
August 1969- Don graces front AND back covers
June 1969- Don's "Loves & Hates", though he emphasizes he doesn't literally "hate" anything (he simply "dislikes" i.e. "prejudice of any kind")
November 1969- pass the smelling salts to Gothick after he ganders at the back cover - SEXY color pin-up headshot of Don suitable for framing

While Elizabeth's character took a back seat for much of the '68 storyline, I offer Joan Bennett a huge credit she was never given during the series: by her example, encouraging other movie stars of the 40's and 50's to give daytime television a try during that period. This would include:
RUTH WARRICK (Phoebe Tyler on "All My Children" - whose character later married Louis Edmonds' "Langley") from 'Citizen Kane'
HUGH MARLOWE (Jim Matthews on "Another World") from 'All About Eve'
DANA ANDREWS (Tom Boswell on "Bright Promise") from 'Best Years Of Our Lives'
GERALDINE FITZGERALD (Violet Jordan on "The Best Of Everything") from 'Dark Victory'
GALE SONDERGAARD (Amanda Key on "The Best Of Everything") from 'The Letter'
JOAN CRAWFORD (Joan Kane on "The Secret Storm") from 'The Women'
JAN STERLING (Miss Foss on "The Guiding Light") from 'The High & The Mighty'

Sandor will be wearing black for the remainder of the week.
Sad to hear that my favorite DS player has left us. Always handsome, earnest, and sensitive, Don Briscoe will live on in the hearts of his fans. I'm looking at a candid fan photo from '68, taken outside the DS studios, where Don is playfully biting Grayson Hall's neck. So when Don reached those pearly gates of heaven, I've no doubt Grayson teasingly greeted him in Julia-voice: "Tom Jennings! Noooooo!!!" - whereupon they hugged, and Grayson took his hand, assuring him,  "I'll take care of you, kid. No full moons up here. Just peace."

Hi, Annie-
Not sure how safe I'll be this year: a lady friend and I are dressing up as "Sandor and Magda," and you know the kind of trouble gypsies can get into.
In some ways, I wish I could be "Quentin" instead, as I'd only have to deal with long sideburns, versus heavy pancake make-up, a bushy black wig, cheap jewelry and a thick accent. As it was, Sandor ended up with a knife in his back, while the "Q" man lived on through his magic portrait.

Gothick, our minds think alike.
I had read somewhere that while the elegant Joan Bennett was still alive and appeared at a DS Convention, a fan had compiled a "Best Scenes of Elizabeth/Judith/Naomi/Flora" videotape for her.
When her characters were front and center in the storyline, Joan seemed at her best. My favorite was when, as Naomi Collins in 1795, she gave Reverend Trask a slap only rivaled by Julia's right hook to Cassandra's cheek during the Dream Curse story.
Yet I yearn to see a "Best of Grayson Hall on DS" compilation, not to mention a "Best of Don Briscoe" - and if consultants were called in on the project, I'd nominate you, Heather, and Julia99 to help handpick the classic moments for Joan, Don, and Grayson: my 3 favorites from the series.

Briscoe, nice eye candy.

You said it, Misa. And as the song goes, "I Want Candy"....
