Current Talk '05 I / Re: Julia AND Dave Woodard: Two Victims?
« on: March 28, 2005, 07:37:03 AM »
Well said, Julia99-
and also with selfish soap characters who commit heinous crimes but become viewer favorites, such as Julia and Barnabas, while neither was ever tried, convicted and punished for the actual death of Dr. Woodard, they both got their lumps in other ways.  Throughout the series, they endured more horrific comeuppances than had they been thrown behind bars. Did the state of Maine have the death penalty in 1967? Would have been an interesting plot twist had the two gone on trial for murder and beat the rap, after some wrenching courtroom histrionics from Frid & Grayson.

ROGER: Liz, I just don't get enough respect around here, so I'm moving to Pine Valley to start a new life. Send my mail care of Phoebe Tyler.

BARNABAS: Hmm, dipping Vicki's hand in warm water didn't do the trick - the sheets are still dry.

BARNABAS: See, Julia? I told you there'd be no harm in slipping a few Seconals into Willie's glass of Tang this morning.

Calendar Events / Announcements '05 I / Re: New DVD review
« on: March 23, 2005, 10:10:32 PM »
Some of those DVD reviews I've read on the Internet come off mean-spirited and unenlightened, with much space wasted on maligning the actors and snickering at the loyal fanbase of DS. I put on my gloves when a review of DVD #12 accused Grayson Hall of "cardboard chewing" and looking skeletal, and Don Briscoe of being "the worst actor ever on television".  Yes, both Grayson and Don had bad days, but I never saw bites taken out of the scenery, and I can write a laundry list of TV actors "worse" than anyone who appeared on DS. Some of these cynical "judges" (as they call themselves) need to spend a moonlit night in the crypt with a hungry werewolf.

Amanda Harris from the 1897 storyline - her only redemption is she shared many scenes with the dashing Don Briscoe...

..and though there are few Donna McKechnie fans based on her DS run, I discovered she was the lead go-go dancer on the 60's music show "Hullabaloo".... and was actually a groovy dancer. Guess if Quentin, Charles or Tim Shaw took her out dancing, we'd have seen a more well-rounded performance. Then again, no one was doing the Frug, Monkey, Jerk, Pony, or Watusi back in 1897.

Awesome birthday tribute, Heather. Now, may I help myself to a piece of Don... er, that is, a piece of Don's birthday cake? It looks delicious.

Current Talk '05 I / Re: DS Milestones
« on: March 22, 2005, 06:21:48 AM »
DS Milestone: an afternoon soap opera that prompted kids and teenagers to run home from school at breakneck speed to catch an episode (up to that point, most daytime programming was watched by and primarily geared toward women over 18).
Another milestone was the phenomenon of the DS stars being featured in teen magazines like "16", "Tiger Beat", "Fave" - once exclusive to teen idols and rock groups. Suddenly, there was forty-ish Jonathan Frid and Grayson Hall gracing the pages of "16 Magazine" with the likes of The Monkees, The Mod Squad, and Bobby Sherman.

JULIA: Hmm, maybe if I pose as a historian, the family will let me live in their house for research purposes.

DR. WOODARD: Research? Ha!  Admit it, Julia, you're hooked on Mrs. Johnson's goulash.

Current Talk '05 I / Re: Favorite Couples/Would-Be Couples
« on: March 21, 2005, 05:32:15 AM »
Magda and Sandor - They were a fun pair, and they really seemed to be in love.  They teased each other a lot, but really cared for each other, and had one of the most realistic marriages depicted on the show IMO.

Thank you, PennyDreadful-
My sentiments too, though runners-up include Barnabas & Julia, Chris & Carolyn, Quentin & Beth, Willie & Maggie, Elizabeth & Stokes, David & Amy, and Roger & the Collinsport Dirty Book Store...

MAGGIE: Julia, my voice is shot. You'll have to take my place tonight at the Blue Whale's American Idol auditions.

JULIA: But my rendition of "What's Love Got To Do With It" is so rusty!

Current Talk '05 I / Re: Characters you care about.
« on: March 19, 2005, 07:40:24 AM »
Remember that song "People who need people..."? I tend to care about the characters whose purpose involved watching out for others, and still entertaining us daily:
Vicki - because if she didn't care about that motley Collinwood crew enough to face ghosts, witches, vampires, Matthew Morgan, time travel, co-stars with hair obsession, bleeder valves, etc., we wouldn't be here today.
Barnabas - because he wanted so much to protect the ones he loved, yet anyone he loved ended up.... well... enjoy the series and carry a box of tissues.
Julia - because she loved the humanity of Barnabas, despite his inhuman tendencies.
Chris - because he loved his orphaned kid sister enough to stick around and face the light of a silvery moon, and live in a musty cottage Mrs. Johnson was too scared to dust or vacuum..

JULIA: Anyone who wakes me so I can follow them to the hot action at Chris Jennings' cottage is okay with me, Beth. Just let me grab my smokes. They'll come in handy later.

JULIA: (sighs contently) Mmmm, tomorrow I'll have to thank Mrs. Johnson for picking up those extra Double D batteries....

CHRIS: Hey, Barnabas, I appreciate your offer to help cure my chronic sleepwalking, but isn't this just a little extreme?!
