"The Edge of Night" was on CBS before it was moved to ABC.  I'd begun watching it shortly after DS's demise because I missed DS so much and a friend told me it was DS-like.  I didn't think it was DS-like exactly, but it was still full of mystery and intrigue and very cool.

So true, Mary. Around 1971 when DS was cancelled, "The Edge Of Night" had a storyline about a house that was supposedly haunted (blood on the walls, ghosts, a terrified woman named Martha, a deranged houseguest named Cookie) - but it was less a supernatural occurance than an escaped convict hiding out in the basement, hoping to scare the residents out of the home where his stolen drugs were hidden.  I was always waiting for more "Dark Shadows" alumni to show up on "Edge." Michael Stroka (Aristede) played a character named Quentin, which I thought was cool.

DON BRISCOE: Lela, if I unbutton one more button on this shirt, Grayson and I will be doing "Streetcar Named Desire"!

GRAYSON: Go for it, Don. Besides, you're a hunk, and Tennessee and I are on a first-name basis.

JOAN BENNETT: Grayson, stop striking the pose. John Huston is not doing a sequel to "Night Of The Iguana" called 'That Darn Judith"!

JULIA: Chris, I warned you what would happen if you showed Joe how Sabrina looked without her wig...

Good one, Countess-
I'd have Julia go and buy a whole bunch of red notebooks that were identical to the one she had in 1967 (which detailed the scandalous truth about Barnabas). Then I'd have her gift one red notebook (filled with dessert recipes) to each member of the household. Once Barnabas came to Collinwood and saw Roger, Elizabeth, Maggie, Mrs. Johnson, etc., each toting around that notebook, and heard them say "Great book! Can't wait to really use it!", that would be one classic April Fool's joke, Hoffman style.

Around 1970, ABC was host to a trio of new soaps ("All My Children," "A World Apart," "The Best Of Everything") and existing ones like "One Life To Live" and "General Hospital." So by the time "Dark Shadows" came on at 4pm, die-hard ABC daytime fans had already watched 5 other serials (and a few game shows thrown in the mix) - so I wonder if this excess contributed to the eventual demise of DS.
In the mid 70's, "The Edge Of Night" moved to ABC and was put in the late afternoon time slot like DS, following 4 other soaps (3 of them an hour long), and it too gradually lost viewership and was cancelled.
ABC had good "sneak previews" between shows by '77, offering an exciting snipet of the following soap's story for that day, so viewers would stay tuned. Does anyone remember if they did that for DS? All I recall is during the end-credits for "One Life To Live," the announcer would say "Now stay tuned for DARK SHADOWS, next on most of these ABC stations."

JULIA: Chris, it's the phone company - they want to know if you're planning to switch to MCI?!

ALEX: (grumbling) This is the last time I go into town on Sarah's bike, just 'cause Quentin and Tracy suddenly get a craving for take-out barbecue ribs and cole slaw!

Mr. Juggins, the life preserver from The Blue Whale wall, Adam's green sweater, the piece of fried chicken that Willie and Adam fought over, Maggie's hideous housecoat, Professor Stokes' monocle, Mad Jenny's dolls, Dr. Lang's dysfunctional tape recorder, Julia's 1967 wig, and Don Briscoe's underwear...

KLS: I just flubbed that damn line and Lela didn't stop the tape!

Grayson: Don't worry- it'll only be shown once and we'll all forget about it. I mean, they don't rerun soap operas!

GUFFAW! Classic, Charles Ellis!

JULIA: (gasps) Talk about a full moon - Barnabas, look! Chris Jennings is streaking through the woods! Amy must have burned his clothes in the fireplace again.

Sorry guys, if the picture wasn't clear enough to recognize the characters... :-

I definitely recognize Briscoe when he's laying down...

WILLIE: Geez, Dr. Hoffman, I don't know how keen Barnabas will be on your taking down Josette's portrait, and replacing it with that boudoir oil painting of you.

JULIA: Posing nude for art classes helped get me through medical school, Willie.

I'd play Tom Jennings' secret boyfriend.  All my most significant scenes would be played off camera, however.

Sorry, Goth baby, but that role has already been cast - and yours truly is playing it! Hands off my Briscoe. Go help Dom find a decent Liz Stoddard wig. It's time he shared his inner Joan Bennett with the rest of us.
