Current Talk '05 II / Re: Molly? Or Amy?
« on: December 21, 2005, 07:47:19 PM »
Not 100% sure, Buzz, but my thought was - Joan Bennett had played the character of Amy in "Little Women," so maybe it was a subtle gesture/homage from Dan Curtis to Joan. Just a theory, folks. Then again, maybe it was a flub on Joel Crothers' part - he said "Molly" instead of the scripted "Amy" in reference to Chris' kid sister - and the scene wasn't re-done, producers assuming "this episode will never be seen again anyway..."

Current Talk '05 II / Re: How DS Fests effect your DS viewing -

And speaking of memorabilia and spending time & money... an autographed 8 x 10 photo of Don Briscoe just sold on E-Bay this week for $128.05!!!

I've been to one Fest, and had more fun hanging with the DS fans/friends than attending the actual planned events. Hanging around the piano in the hotel lobby, warbling Quentin's Theme with the group, was more exciting than posing for a photo with KLS. Nothing personal, Katie.

GRAYSON HALL: (thinking to herself) I told Dan Curtis, no kids and no animals. It's bad enough I just spent the last eight months trapped under that black gypsy wig!!

ROGER: I'm sorry, Liz, but I forbid David to watch that DVD of "Scarlet Street" again - the woman in that film was loose and amoral.

ELIZABETH: I thought she was kind of hot.

Amy Jennings - left Collinsport, took up gum chewing, found a golden ticket inside a candy bar, gained entrance into a chocolate factory, consumed a non-FDA-approved confection and turned into a giant blueberry.

It's the back of the bus for Reverend Shannon when Judith (Grayson) takes control. Can't wait! Great film - superb casting.

Current Talk '05 II / Re: In Defense of Roger Davis -
« on: December 15, 2005, 09:25:54 AM »
I always felt Roger Davis had a distinctive voice - and apparently voice-over work kept him employed beyond his DS years (time share hawking aside - chuckle). I'm also partial to the beautiful-yet-unpretentious Jaclyn Smith, who was once married to Roger, so if she saw something in the guy (enough to say "I do"), he had more than meets the eye.
And ultimately, his role as Dirk Wilkins in the 1897 storyline gave him some meat to chew, considering his Jeff Clark, Peter Bradford, and Ned Stuart characters were innocuous and bland at best.
I met Roger at one of the west coast DS conventions (where I also had the pleasure of meeting our beloved Midnite), and knowing he was friends with Don Briscoe, I cornered him for a scoop. Don was still alive at the time, and Roger Davis had spoken to Don recently. Davis regarded me not as a crazed Briscoe groupie, but as someone who was genuinely interested in the whereabouts and welfare of his friend (Roger and Don had met in college), and his rapport was friendly and earnest. For that, he has my respect.
In a book I read, Lara Parker remarked how Alexandra Moltke hated doing scenes with Roger (Davis, not Collins), but given she was so sedate, and he played everything so frantic, the chemistry was off - still, they were constantly paired up. His best scenes seemed to be with Frid, Lara Parker, and Grayson Hall - their theatrical intensities kept him grounded and his hair in place.

Robin-
It's that time of year AGAIN?! (And I don't mean the holidays)
Have a great birthday - come by the Blue Whale and we'll celebrate with some brandy or sherry, Collinwood-style.

I re-watched the Betsy Durkin-as-Vicki episodes and now can see why Alexandra Moltke (pregnant at the time) bailed so quickly before completing her storyline - thus perplexing her fans. AM gave birth to her son around June of '69, so she was likely 2-3 months into her pregnancy when Vicki was:
attacked by Tom Jennings the vampire (and thrown around), menaced by Adam the monster-man (and thrown around), tortured in a laboratory, prone to suicidal tendencies after Peter/Jeff vanished, prone to collapsing on the floor in grief... all heavy physical stuff for an expectant actress. Betsy Durkin couldn't hope to fill Alexandra's shoes (or her sleeveless dresses from Ohrbach's), but give her credit for being a darn good stuntwoman.

Just the subject heading made me stop and wonder - is MPI interested in adding "Closed Captions" to the 1225 DS episodes on subsequent DVD releases and re-issues? Wouldn't that be a great job (for an unemployed DS fan such as I) to input all the dialogue from all the episodes for closed captioning?! The mind reels...

Thanks for finding and sharing this, MB - I love this kind of stuff. The Flying Nun was #2? Barnabas could fly circles around Sally Field's coronet.

And leave us not forget, Gothick old friend, that Tim Shaw was also victimized by Vampire Dirk in the 1897 storyline, though the bite was implied and done off-camera (we just heard Briscoe's screams). Is there some sort of "who bit who" index for DS fans? Would be fun to see an entire list, but Nancy Barrett's characters would definitely be front and center on said list.

BARNABAS: Now, Chris, just because you don't like the way Mrs. Johnson cleans your cottage is no excuse to use the secret room for a crash pad.
