Three cheers for David Selby. I never knew about this DavidSelby.com before (forgive me, Annie), but I admire and support his views. A well-needed boost for the holidays. Thank you MsCriseyde for posting this.

Current Talk '10 II / Re: sometimes vicki's a pain in neck
« on: October 24, 2010, 06:04:38 PM »
Interesting. Now that I think about it, the sort of "tough cookie" female characters on the show: Carolyn, Julia, Angelique, Eve, and to a degree, Elizabeth, are all written with a comfort level to zing their unsavoury male and female adversaries, while indeed, Victoria responds to such elements with a standard "deep freeze" haughtiness.  What gave her a rare chance to be dicey in so few fleeting moments were Vicki's lapses of concentration; when she'd become simply exasperated, forget her manners, and just snap (she took David & Roger to task several times in that first year as the new governess):

Vicki (to Cassandra): "You deserve a whole lot more than just a slap in the face!"
Vicki (to Nicholas): "...[you appeared] as if we had to have some eye of evil constantly staring at us!" "You're not human!"

For a girl who went toe-to-toe with both a witch and a warlock, Vicki deserved to be let in on more of the real goings-on at Collinwood and The Old House, but that reality might have hardened her spirit. Maybe her haughtiness was to give her character the ongoing hope of becoming humbled in her enlightenment. Characters like Julia and Eve had already been around the block and weren't dropping the chips on their shoulders over the next dashing vampire who summoned them into his web.

Current Talk '10 II / Re: Discussion on Jenny Collins

I always wondered if Jenny's madness was brought on by an old gypsy curse - someone in the caravan cursed Jenny with madness, for marrying outside of her own kind.

While trying to think of a fun Julia scene, I suddenly realized how well Grayson Hall worked with so many different actors on the show. My favorites weren't limited to her Julia scenes with Barnabas; they included:

1967: Julia & Carolyn's catty scenes when Barnabas was plotting to destroy Julia
1968: Julia & Nicholas Blair's verbal showdowns during the Adam storyline
1968: Julia can't pull the wool (or cloak) over Professor Stokes' knowing eyes
1968: Julia & Tom Jennings makin' whoopie in the woods
1969: Julia comes to 1897 and tangles with Angelique
1970: Julia helps Grant Douglas find his inner-Quentin

She didn't just give her all in her scenes and storylines with Barnabas - she made every interaction Julia had with every character a memorable and entertaining one.

Current Talk '10 II / Re: Favorite Magda Scenes
« on: August 15, 2010, 04:04:03 PM »
There are so many great Magda scenes - and the series of episodes where Jenny dies and Magda vows to curse Quentin are some of her finest.
The one that comes to mind is after Edward has told Magda and Sandor how Jenny supposedly died, and that in fact, she has already been buried. Later, a seething Magda & Sandor come back to Collinwood to retrieve Jenny's belongings, as Magda dryly quips to Edward, "Or have you buried those too?!!"  I always let out a chuckle when I hear that line.

Very grateful for the inside scoop, Midnite. Thanks for sharing. Wish I'd been there to croon an evening tune with the gang at the hotel lobby piano like we did back in '02.

The suspense is killing me! Can't wait to hear some fun feedback about the DS reunion. I hope someone remembers to seek out a Don Briscoe T-shirt for me.

Seeing these great candids of Grayson from "Iguana" made my day. Thanks for sharing these.  She must have her legs sticking out the window of the bus in that one shot: the seats weren't long enough for her to stretch out.

Pansity, keep spreading that Gemini charm. Have a great birthday.

Thank you for the birthday cheer. I actually watched a scary old movie on my B-Day: "Happy Birthday To Me" with Melissa Sue Anderson from 1981. That girl had more "issues" than Carolyn Stoddard and Maggie Evans combined in that film. Then I needed a dose of Dark Shadows shortly thereafter.

Current Talk '10 I / Re: Off-Camera Scenes You Wish Had Been Shown

Favorite unseen moments would definitely include the lugging around of all those "disappearing" or "relocated" coffins - through the thick brush in the woods at that! Poor Willie must have had a hernia, if not severe back trouble, in his older age.

And that scene after Julia once fished Barnabas out of a premature burial in the ground, there should have been a follow-up scene where Barnabas dusts himself off, climbs out of the casket, and says to Julia, "Did you bring your car? Let's swing by The Blue Whale. After all that, I could use a stiff drink!"

Current Talk '10 I / Re: Ned Stuart -- Touchy Feely Freak
« on: May 30, 2010, 06:07:08 PM »
I've watched the Ned/Sabrina/Chris episodes again recently, and I got the impression Roger Davis played Ned Stuart so manically - as to distinguish him completely different from Jeff Clark. Unfortunately, if you play a Jeff Clark episode back-to-back with a Ned Stuart one, one finds little difference in tone - other than the circumstance of the character.

The one scene that creeped me out involved Ned and little Amy Jennings. Ned was left alone at Collinwood while Maggie went dashing through the woods after David. When Ned realized Amy was the sister of Chris, I thought for a moment he might try to kidnap her - or harm her - until Don Briscoe swooped in on the scene and said "Leave her out of this!"

The one person who took no guff from Ned was Dr. Julia Hoffman. I love Grayson Hall's deadpan glance when she and Don Briscoe shuffle into Ned & Sabrina's room at the Collinsport Inn, and Ned barks "Why is she [Julia] here?! This isn't some social reunion!"
