Current Talk '06 II / Re: Kinescopes
« on: August 01, 2006, 06:17:33 AM »
One of my favorite episodes is a kinescope - episode #683 - featuring Julia's hypnosis of Chris Jennings, Barnabas & Julia's ominous suspicions about David & Amy, a visit from a ghost, and a touch of grave-digging at the finale... not to mention a nice voice-over from Don Briscoe at the beginning.  It almost has a more gothick feel to it in black & white - and it's a bit of a jolt when the next installment goes back to color.

And Gothick, when you're done viewing the Grayson marathon, pull out some of those Best of Don Briscoe moments from your archives - no birthday is complete without Chris & Tom Jennings to sink your claws & teeth into (or THEIRS into YOURS).

Hope it's been a great day! Cheers!

Loved Tudi Wiggins - she was kind of from the Grayson Hall school of characters who were whiskey-voiced, tough as nails - yet dames with hearts of gold and an entertainingly scheming reserve. Her chartacter on "Love of Life", Meg, was having an affair with Jerry Lacy's character - who was also having an affair with Meg's daughter! She was quite memorable as the headstrong Meg. Hey, she bedded Reverend Trask (indirectly). Someone had to.

RIP, Tudi.

GRAYSON: What do you mean I don't get top-billing over Jonathan Frid and Joan Bennett?!! Just three years ago, I was a contender for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar!!

David: "I've got a surprise for you, Cassandra - I bugged your room with this tape recorder - and last night it caught you doing a Karaoke version of 'Black Magic Woman' by Santana!"

I never underestimate the brilliance of Grayson Hall on "Dark Shadows" - she truly was the glue that held together the outrageous premise that Barnabas was a 175 year-old bloodsucker. He'd done so many heinous things (especially to her!) that by the time we, the viewers, realized Julia was in love with him, we couldn't help but love him too. Jonathan Frid, naturally, deserves much of the credit for his portrayal of Barnabas, but Grayson's Julia Hoffman was so identifiable.

After all, haven't we all loved and adored someone who didn't love us back as much, yet we remained faithful, dedicated, and hopeful that said person was worthy of our affection?!

My favorite Grayson scenes (as Magda, Julia, PT Hoffman, Natalie, etc.) were when she just talked turkey - commenting on the ludicrous goings-on at Collinwood, but in such a way that you believed this stuff could actually be happening - like when Elizabeth realized the children were possessed by ghosts, and Julia wryly quipped, "Mrs. Stoddard, if I had told you there were spirits roaming the house, would you have believed me?!" And Liz solemnly answered, "I do now."

Julia had something so shocking to tell Stokes that she made him face the closed drawing room doors before she could reveal it - and it was that her tweed outfit was also a floatation device!

Nicholas' slap to Angelique, when she got caught defying his warning about going after Barnabas in the summer of '68, was a juicy moment.

And speaking of Nicholas, he deftly avoided a slap from Eve, as I recall.

ALEXANDRA: Roger Davis just signed on for another year!

GRAYSON: (gasps) Well, Alex, maybe I can talk Sam into writing a premature burial storyline for Peter Bradford.

Those scenes between Ava Gardner and Grayson Hall are priceless! No slam to Joan Bennett (who was superb as Elizabeth/Naomi/Judith/Flora), but wouldn't it have been a coup for Dan Curtis to get AVA GARDNER to play the role of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard and her many alter-egos??! Sandor digresses....

JEFF: Vicki, your dress has sleeves! I'm so confused!

VICKI: No, you're just so vain. You probably think this show is about you, don't you?! Don't you?! Don't you?!

237
LOUIS: You realize, Joan, if this silly show clicks with viewers, we could be here for a good 4 to 5 years!!

Not even the cold-hearted Minerva Trask was immune to the charms of the dreamy Timothy Shaw.

Not even "my" cold heart for that matter. Tim Shaw makes it nice & toasty.

TIM: Quick, Charity, take that unsightly afghan and burn it!! I can't stand to look at it another second.
