Calendar Events / Announcements '12 I / "Lost" Marie Wallace credit?
« on: April 04, 2012, 04:44:36 AM »
Ooooh, Oooooh. I had fallen asleep on the couch with MeTV running Saturday, and woke up to "Car 54 Where Are You?" which I have loved since I was a kid. Part of the plot had Officer Nicholson (Hank Garrett) talking to his partner Officer Schnauser (Al "Grandpa" Lewis) about his date with a hot redhead, a "real tomato." At the very end of the episode, I would swear his date turned out to be Marie Wallace. The actress is not listed in the credits, which is why this would escape being listed on Car 54's imdb credits. Anyone know for sure? The title of the episode was "One Sleepy People" from Season 2.

In memory of the late Davy Jones, MeTV , which is what TVLand used to be like, will be running an episode of "Love American Style" in which Davy co-stars with DS's Kathy Cody. This airs at 1:30 pm ET. Davy and Kathy play newlyweds I believe. This follow a Love American Style with Davy and Karen Valentine, and the classic Davy Jones episode of The Brady Bunch at 12:30 pm ET. For more Davy Jones, Antenna TV is running a Monkees marathon concurrently.

The upcoming documentary film, "Virginia Creepers" now has a trailer on U-Tube. Here's a link :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYEy6a5WLIM

The film will trace the old local Horror Hosts of Virginia and nearby from the mid 1950s through the present. I am happy to have been one of the fan interviewees and contributors who will be in the film.  The website is lots of fun too, so have a look there as well.

Hello Board
Just a reminder Roger Davis will be one of the guests at The Williamsburg Film Fest the weekend of March 6-8, that's Thursday through Saturday. Other guests include Lee Meriwether, Gregory Walcott (Ed Wood's "Plan 9 from Outer Space"), Richard Devon (AIP's "Blood for Dracula" 1957, and a ton of other stuff) and Jacqueline Scott. At least three guests appeared on Twilight Zone

Here the link's http://wff5.tripod.com/id16.html     http://wff5.tripod.com/index.html

rather a fun low key show that focuses on the western genre, but a lot of the guests have some SciFi/Horror/Classic TV in their resumes.

Collinwood Mousketeer Roll Call...

Last minute laundry, fresh batteries for the camera...bottled tap water so we don't have to buy it at the hotel...auto check...done. Must be soon to head down the road. So who's coming this year... and when do we have "a board meeting."

Diane and I are leaving Thursday morning so we can take our time, its a good 6 hour or so drive. Plus, we both like Tarrytown and the Hudson Valley area. For those who can, don't skip a trip up to Sleepy Hollow cemetery and the "Horseman Diner." We've never gone to the Kykuit estate so I think we will do that rather than Lyndhurst this year. (Nothing on Lyndhurst, but it would be visit # 5?) Anyone been to Kykuit?

So, Cousins, who will be at the family reunion this year...

I found this book at the Monster Bash film show in Pittsburgh in June and don't recall ever seeing it before. Obviously, the cover image of our Carolyn Stoddard from "House of Dark Shadows" caught my eye. I haven't read all the text, but it seems there mostly to serve as an excuse for a collection of stills from vampire films, most especially as they became increasingly lurid through the 1970s.  Not many actual references to Dark Shadows in the book, although the Dan Curtis/Jack Palance Dracula gets a fair coverage as does John Karlen's Euro-opus, Daughters of Darkness . A curio, not worth going out of your way for. Interestingly, like the festival guest, German Robles, star of many Mexican vampire films, images of Nancy as Carolyn from the House film show up in a lot of vampire books with little reference to the source. As the book isn't too common, so I thought some of you might like to see the cover. The book was published in 1975.

Roger Davis will be among the actors planning to appear at the annual Williamsburg Film Festival, which is held each spring in Williamsburg Va. Next years's show will be held from Wed March 5th through Saturday March 8th. Here is link to the website : http://wff5.tripod.com/index.html

guest page:  http://wff5.tripod.com/id16.html

For those of you who have not been, this is a bit smaller than most film shows, and the focus is on classic tv and film westerns, although many of the actors have also been in a broad range of films.  As such, Roger will be appearing with his "Alias Smith and Jones" costar, Ben Murphy. Roger will no doubt be signing a few DS items for fans as well.

I've been going to this show for most of its ten year history, and find it a pleasant, almost cozy show with smaller crowds and an easy going atmosphere. Very family friendly. The crowd is a bit older than most film conventions, and there's something rather charming about seeing senior citizens dressing up like Lash LaRue or Smiley Burnette. (I've seen a few country music stars drop by as fan attendees, not as guests.) Generally, you have time to chat with each guest. The most recent show had Richard Anderson, star of Dan Curtis's "The Night Strangler." There is a dealer's room, again somewhat specializing in western film collectibles, panels, and showings of numerous B-westerns. Williamsburg Va is also a great place to spend a fews days, most especially for history buffs. Jamestown and Yorktown are very close by.

Current Talk '06 II / What if...a Dark Shadows Holiday fantasy
« on: December 14, 2006, 06:37:10 PM »

Several times, such as the Directors Guild show, Dan Curtis stated he wished he would have just placed a hold on the current story and staged a version of "A Christmas Carol" with the cast, running the week of Christmas. Now , there is no longer any way to determine at what period in the show's run (other than a December) this may happened, but I think the DS cast would have been excellent  doing this. I wanted to do my casting, and invite others to join in.

Ebenezer Scrooge:  Jonathan Frid
Jacob Marley : Louis Edmonds
Bob Cratchit : John Karlen
Mrs. Cratchit: Nancy Barrett
Tiny Tim : David Henesey
Cratchit children: Denise Nickerson, Sharon Smyth, Michael Maitland. David Jay...
Fred (Scrooge's Nephew) : Chris Pennock
Fred's wife: Virginia Vestoff
Fen (Scrooge's sister) : Joan Bennett
Ghost of Christmas Past : Lara Parker
Ghost of Christmas Present : David Selby
Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come : Humbert Astredo
Old Fezziwig : Thayer David
Mrs. Fezziwig: Grayson Hall
Scrooge's Charwoman : Clarice Blackburn
Fen (Scrooge's lost love) : Kathryn Leigh Scott
Young Scrooge: Michael Stroka
Young Marley: Roger Davis
Men collecting for Charity: Robert Gerringer, David Ford, Gene Lindsey
Undertaker: Jerry Lacey
Business men at Stock Exchange: Addison Powell,  Conrad Bain, Abe Vigoda

Now, of course the problem, who was around during those weeks and at what year. I did the casting based on the entire run. There's a few problems. There really isn't a juicy part for Grayson for example, we could switch her and Clarice for example. Also, while David Selby would certainly be a great Bob Cratchit, I felt John Karlen would be better, playing off the Barnabas/Willie chemistry. Also, Joel Crothers, Don Briscoe, James Storm or Selby again would also have been great as Fred, or Dennis Patrick as Jacob Marley. You could even switch Jonathan and Louis are Scrooge and Marley and it would still work. So, I invite you to make your cases for any changes, but most of all imagine what might have been..."the greatest ghost story ever."

(I wanted to post this last year and never got around to it, so I waited until the right time...)

A Christmas Carol is a Dan Curtis Production...

In his (very funny) comic books, Chris Pennock makes an allusion that Christopher Walken was among many actors working in New York who interviewed with Dan Curtis for Dark Shadows. While it can't be certain what part he tried out for, or if the story is simply well, apocryphal, but for fun, chose a part Chris may have been suited for. You may chose one listed or make a case for a different one. When making your choice, for the purpose of this poll, please try to focus on what would have suited his "style" moreso than Chris as a preference over the person actually cast. (Unless you want to have a compare and contrast post.) Keep in mind also that Walken was 25 in 1968. Now...imagine....

I picked up the Groovie Goolies DVD box yesterday. For those of you who may or may not remember, this was a Saturday morning cartoon spun-off from the Filmation studios Archie and Sabrina series which ran in the last '60, the Goolies debuting in 1970. The series was a sort of Laugh-In with the lead characters being reinventions of Dracula, Frankenstein, and a hippy Wolfman, along with various other spookies.  [frankie] [Wolfie] [vampy]

Aside from very corny jokes, it also had two songs each show in the tradition of the aforementioned Archies cartoon, one of which was later a top 40 hit when remade under the name Daddy Dewdrop, which was the novelty song "Chick-A-Boom (Don't cha just love it)." Like many Saturday morning shows, it had an afterlife in various forms in syndication.
Well, aside from the monster themes, what also may be of interest to the boards is that the set was produced and hosted by the Dark Shadows Halloween show's contest winner, Wally Wingert. Wally, incredibly knowledgeable about this show, hosts two commentary tracks and a "docu'comedymentay" on the show. I did lean some great stories about some of the Saturday am voice artists such as Howard Morris and Larry Storch (all staples of '50 and '60s sitcoms.) among others. (Larry also appeared in Arsenic and Old Lace with Jonathan Frid)  Its nice to hear Dal McKennon can still do Archie's voice, and has done show at fan events.
Anyway, it goes without saying this is a great piece of nostalgia for us "late boomers" and, well, it goes great with a bowl of your favorite monster cereal.

Polls Archive / Films that have plots that influenced Dark Shadows
« on: October 30, 2006, 10:38:57 PM »
Which of these films that influenced Dark Shadows storylines do you enjoy the most?

My qualification for this list was for films other than those horror standards, most especially literary adaptions. Instead, I wanted to look at those where a particular unique plot point was "borrowed" or otherwise had a big influence on Dark Shadows. Therefore, no straightforward adaptions of Dracula, Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Turn of the Screw etc. For similar reasons, I did not include films made from short stories, such as by Poe or Lovecraft. I did chose films where a significant plot twist was introduced, not in the original story. (This on the two Dracula movies) I also eliminated The Wolfman, because while it had a big influence on Dark Shadows, it was harder to pin the specific plot point, unlike Werewolf of London . Feel free of course to discuss any films I may have missed. I was rather inspired by the recent discussion of Lugosi's Return of the Vampire of late, and how the mausoleum used was so similar to the Collins mausoleum.

Most of all, HAVE FUN!  [dancing_bones]   [dancing_bones]   [dancing_bones]

For those unfamiliar with any of these films, here's some briefs on how they influenced DS:

House of Dracula (1945) : Count Dracula seeks out a scientist who can treat vampirism as a blood disease.

Return of Dracula (1958) : A vampire arrives from  and insinuates himself on the family as a lost relative from Europe.

The Mummy (1932) : Risen from the grave, a walking corpse of a man obsesses on a woman who is the reincarnation of his great lost love.

The Thing That Could Not Die (1958):  A powerful warlock's head is found in a box and it takes possession of the living to help him find his lost body.

The Undead (1957) : A woman makes a mysterious journey into the past where she is framed for black magic by a jealous witch. After returning to the present, no one believes her.

The Uninvited (1944) : A brother and sister live in a great mansion on a cliffside by the sea. They are haunted by  mysterious and sad female ghost who's presence is felt by the scent of lilacs.

Werewolf of London (1935) : A werewolf hopes to find a cure by seeking the mysterious moon poppy.

Happy Halloween!!!!   [candle_in_skull_2]
