Messages - Janet the Wicked

Oh, yeah. Hugh Hubert did a lot of ad libbing and walks behind a couple actors doing a scene in that passageway. There's no doubt in my mind that DC had seen these.

Best line in Black Cat '41 comes from Brod Crawford when Basil Rathbone's charater discovers a clue: "He thinks he's Sherlock Holmes." LOL!!!!!

Since these rare Universals were available, I decided to seek out a real gem - Slightly Honorable (released by United Artists or one of the lesser studios, RKO maybe, I can't remember which) - one of the best mystery movie endings in Hollywood history. And it is! Under ten clams on Amazon. If you're a true fan of old time murder mystery pictures and comedy, this is the film for you. Pat O'Brien (bless his soul), & Brod Crawford star. A real treat.

The Collinses have NEVER had any competition, so any competition at all would look like a shot across the bow. And because they have no competition, I'm sure they don't offer any of the perks that employees get (or used to get), such as health insurance, paid vacation days, paid sick days, etc. I get the impression that Maine's economy was kind of depressed in those days, so I'll bet anyone in Collinsport who had a job with Collinsport Enterprises considered him- or herself lucky.

I don’t know too much about what working back then was like, except that factories used to shut down for two weeks in the summer and those two weeks were the employee’s vacation time. I can’t imagine Liz not taking care of her people. I think they would have medical coverage and sick time.

... put him in her personal 'longboat' till he's sober!!

That is beyond perfect!

Not only did I find myself thinking that the guy playing Amos must have done mostly Mob parts, but also that he himself might just be a mobster-turned-actor.   This is totally unjustified, just a passing thought.

LOL!!!!

Is it my imagination or does the actor playing Amos Finch call Burke Boirk? Now there’s a Maine native for ya.

I wanted to post a bit of Luciaphil’s 2005 comments on this episode, because they are so on the money. And it’s pretty funny.
From Luciaphil’s Idle Thoughts:
You can practically see the cigarette smoke wafting around the hotel suite, it's that thick. Mitchell Ryan, who had his own share of problems, is totally blowing his scenes. You can tell he's messing up the lines because the guy playing Amos is madly trying to read the TelePrompTer because Ryan's screwed up the cues. Then the actor playing Zeb Cartwright is looking dazed, which is no surprise. In the space of five minutes, Ryan has referred to him as Jim, Sam, and Zeb. Amos takes off (I think ahead of schedule).

TPTB most likely never dreamed we’d be watching DS in syndication, but they really should have shot that whole scene over. It’s akin to that moment during a play when one of the actors forgets their lines and there is a rather lengthy lull as they search for their cue.

Go into Complete This Phrase for this episode. I know there’s at least one capture of Vicki wearing that thing.

Janet, I've never had an adult monster-movie phase.   This isn't top of my list for the stuff I'd immerse in if the disposable income weren't nearly zero, but I'd get to it pretty fast.

Are you saying my taste in films stink?

Vicky's robe is possibly the worst thing I've seen on the whole series.  All the other bad garments give the sense that somebody with a sense of style designed them.  Not necessarily with the sort of sense of style that I'd want to be caught dead within a hundred miles of - but some thought went into them.  Vicky's robe looks like something that was bought at the Woolworth's and that was given to the foundling home a decade or two before she was born.

You're right. I kept trying to figure out what kind of fabric it was made out of. It looks like a combo of old newspapers and a garbage bag.

Thank you! Happy Halloweeny to you too.

A friend and I, when we were on the phone, would always do dialogue from Night Monster. He would do Lugosi's dialogue so hysterically funny, it had me in stitches every time.

There’s really no sense in saying much about that thing Vicki had on, except that if it isn’t uglier than that lemon yellow chiffon thing she will wear, it’s damn close.

It seems to me that Liz and Roger are treating Vicki’s ordeal pretty darn lightly.

Carolyn’s reason for wanting Vicki to stay is that Vicki’s the only person she can talk to about Burke. “Can you imagine the mess I'd have been in without your advice?” There are plenty of times in these early eps where I just want to slap Carolyn. But I guess her behavior is understandable, since she’s at that age where the entire world revolves around her, but really. Get a grip, kid.

Now if Roger believes his son to be an “incipient psychopath”, why isn’t the kid in therapy?

I hadn't remembered Maggie knowing about boats and engines in quite such detail, and I'm wondering exactly how she acquired that knowledge.

Maybe she belonged to the sailing club at Collinsport High. She may have enjoyed it so much so that she decided to delve deeply into all the details. That's what I think anyway.

It kills me that Burke can not only stand up when he was rip roaring drunk at the Blue Whale, but that he can entertain as well. And doesn't the ever present subject of coffee come up?

Carolyn tells him this is the best time she's ever had. Man, you don't get out much, do you, girlie?
