What strikes me about James Hall is that he has some trouble remembering his lines.  Put him together with Jonathan Frid, and you could have a lot of awkward silences.

OMG! He's awful! I don't even care what happened to this "actor" after Dan Curtis fired his ass.

Janet, thanks (I think) for the definition of "speedball." But I'm still not sure why Willie calls Maggie one--unless he thinks she gave him the bum's rush?

It doesn't make much sense does it? I'm thinking that maybe James Hall put that in himself. Purely speculation, but that's the only thing I can think of.

God, James Hall’s Willie is awful. Glad I don’t have any of his episodes on DVD. I would love to have seen what John Karlen would have done with this stupid dialogue. “First come, first serve generation”? Gad! And I had to look up speedball. “The combination of the narcotic heroin and stimulant cocaine mixed together and injected together in a single shot.”

This the last time we hear of the “art dealer” pushing Sam for more paintings?

I'm still trying to figure out the relationship between Jason and Willie.

I think subsequent episodes will define the relationship between Willie and Jason. And anyway, James Hall isn’t helping the character development whatsoever. Yuk!

Bottom line -  I really don't care what anyone thinks about the Barnabas Collins I grew up enjoying; the same is true for the original series.   And for that reason, what anyone thinks of the Depp portrayal of the character is meaningless to me.

From what I've seen of the trailers and behind the scenes stuff, I think it looks like a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to seeing it. If it ends up being crap, it won't affect my viewing of the original whenever the mood strikes me.

If I was Elizabeth at this point, I would seriously consider (a. hiring a hitman to take care of Jason or (b. maybe subtly suggesting to David that next time Jason wants to borrow one of the fancy cars (and I'm sure he arm-twisted Elizabeth on that as well as everything else) David might want to take a look at the bleeder valve to make sure the car is 'just fine' for Jason
Because for all of Jason's cheery and 'charming' personality he proves in here what a vile and thoroughly disgusting snake-in-the-grass he really is.

Just imagine if Matthew had still been around.

Carolyn's decided she doesn't like Jason.  I'm trying to remember a scene between Carolyn thinking Jason was just fascinating and Carolyn not trusting him, and I can't.  Somebody help me please.  When Carolyn was making a fool of herself over Burke Devlin, there was nothing anybody could say or do to persuade her that Burke was bad news.  But now she's changed her mind about Jason McGuire in the blink of an eye, despite the fact that Jason's more charming than Burke ever dreamed of being.

Exactly. The last time we saw Carolyn, she seemed smitten with Jason. She was flirting with him. Now, all of a sudden, she doesn't trust him.

I liked Bert Convy best in Roger Corman's A Bucket of Blood (a low budget classic). He played an undercover narco cop in a beatnik coffee shop and was offed via a frying pan to the head.

That's the only thing I remember him in. But for some reason when speaking of Convy playing Barnabas, I envision cream pies being thrown ala Soupy Sales.

Maybe there isn't a plan.  Maybe that's why Jason hasn't gotten anywhere in the world: because he can't think that far ahead.  He's smart, but he's not wise.

I'm not sure this is true.  I'm just throwing it out there.

I believe Jason says something to the effect that things didn’t work out when Liz asks him what he did with all the money she gave him 20 years ago. He may have made bad investments or simply squandered it all away.

Nancy K just posted a Barnabas publicity photo from the 1967 sessions I am pretty sure has gone unseen all these years, and it's a really good one--great angle, with the cane, in Josette's bedroom with her portrait above Barnabas.

Where?

I have written the first of three blog posts  I intend to write about Jonathan.  The first is now up for anyone who is interested in reading it.

Very nice homage, Kerz. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to reading more.
