Thanks for posting this topic.  I'm printing it out to study at home.

As I've been in the process of purchasing my own first computer (as commented on in the "librarians" thread in Announcements), so this was timely for me too ... interesting that I've given myself a crash course in the past few weeks, and also would have advised Josette to get Windows XP Professional vs. the "Home" edition, based on what I've heard and read.  And to think I didn't even know what an "operating system" was a month ago!

 ;D

I'm really shocked that you've had so much trouble with Dell because everyone that I know who has ever bought a Dell has raved about how great their support is. Also, Dell consistently ranks at the top of customer support surveys. In fact, PC Magazine readers gave them an A in their latest reader's survey.

Perhaps you should report the person or people you've worked with to the main Dell office. Seriously. Sometimes you just have the bad luck of getting some arrogant SOB who thinks you're at their mercy - not that they're there to help you. No one should have to put up with what you've been through. :( And if enough people were to complain about certain support staff, chances are they wouldn't be likely to remain part of the support staff for too long. ;)

I was at the doctor's today and am amazed that my blood pressure is still normal after what I've been going through with Dell.

One of the first persons I've mentioned my Dell problems to was a tech person at the computer lab here.  She said she'd been through the same thing with Dell, and it took six months of phone calls, letters, and e-mails (none of them responded to) before they got her situation straight.  In the meantime she returned the computer but it took months before they credited her for it.  Someone she knows had a similar experience.

I read the article in the Aug. issue of PC World (first time I've ever picked up a computer magazine  :D ) and they said that complaints with Dell have risen alarmingly.

I am going to call tomorrow and set up a return of the whole damn thing.  I started this process once already, but got a smooth-talking returns person who promised to remedy the situation (we're talking a $330 upgrade that I've already paid for) ... it's been 10 days and that's the last I've heard (she promised 5 days max).

I've been lied to and given the run around for three weeks and have dealt with at least a dozen "care" staff.

My big worry is that I won't be credited the $1,700 return, or they'll concoct some more charges, so I may have to cancel my credit card, which I'm told will negatively affect my credit rating.

Patti -- am anxious to read your Dell comments in the other thread ...  :o

Luciaphil -- would love to hear more about those disgusting goings-ons you've encountered   ;D

Will have to print out this thread to read more carefully at home, but I just wanted to say that this has got to be one of the most MACABRE stories ever seen on DS.

I love it!

Now that both Bruno and John Yaeger are gone, I think I can sit back and enjoy the rest of the storyline!  I had to leave the room during Bruno's strangulation -- ahh, if only there had been daytime Emmy Awards, I'm sure Michael Stroika would have been up for one!  >:D

Nicky,

I wrote a very similar commentary about NODS on the forum a few years ago ... in fact I would almost swear you had lifted my review (just kidding  ;D) were it not for the fact that I do note two areas of disagreement -- namely, I didn't and, truthfully still don't, appreciate the music which seems to date the movie to its era; and I thought James Storm was very good.

I surprised myself by admiring both Kate Jackson and Chris Pennock, as well as finding the movie interesting and original (while still "influenced" by a number of other sources).

Re: Best Buy, not librarians -- God bless (some) of them.   ;D

Yes, these are all the reasons why I decided not to even consider Best Buy when I began looking into my first computer purchase a couple of weeks ago.

However, my current experience with Dell has been hell on earth -- I made an upgrade, for which I've been charged over $300 but didn't get what I paid for and have been at their mercy for the past three weeks with no resolution in sight.

Now I find out that I could have found almost the same thing -- actually a Compaq Presario with more memory and a faster processor from Best Buy online.

Still exhausted and at the mercy of Dell, whose customer "care" staff couldn't "care" less.

Great acting in this gripping movie -- but the actress playing Alexandra Moltke didn't seem anything like Ms. Isles (sp?) appears to present herself publicly.  Very undignified and flighty in the movie, if I remember correctly.

It's strange, because if I were to pick a favorite DS writer, I might well pick Joe Caldwell.  He may not have written enough of the show to compare with Sam Hall or some of the others, but there is always such intelligence behind his writing, for example in the dialogue, that it would be striking enough to catch my attention so that I'd check the credits to see who wrote the episode.

Strange, then, that my overall favorite storyline, 1840 -- the culmination of the series, IMO -- and Joe Caldwell never wrote for it!

.....................

It sounds very odd that Violet Welles would have continued writing for the show after having been taken off it.  She had nothing else to do, or what?

This was done as a radio play?!?

It would be hard to picture Selby as Mitch otherwise ...

How interesting -- I thought that was only done in the U.K.

I've seen three filmed/TV versions of this great play, and the best in my view is the one with Ann-Margret and Treat Williams from about 1982.

I know that's almost sacrosanct (am I using that word correctly??) given the legendary status of the Brando, Vivien Leigh version.  And while I'm an admirer of Leigh, I find the movie version dated.  The 1982 tele-version was "unexpurgated," and, if anything (though it's probably unfair to compare), Ann-Margret AND Treat Williams were more real in the roles.

Who did win the supporting actress Oscar that year?

Sorry, I was mixed up about the night.  It was on Tuesday night (i.e., 2 a.m. Wednesday).

The movie "Vampire Journals" airs on SciFi at 2 a.m. CENTRAL time early Thursday morning (a.k.a. late night tonight, Wednesday).

One of the best modern, contemporary vampire movies I've happened to see.  I liked it far, far better than "The Hunger" and much better than "Embrace of the Vampire."

Current Talk '03 II / Costume Balls, Rebecca, and DS Writers

I haven't been able to access DS Boards for the past few weeks due to a number of circumstances, and I've missed being here.  I feel especially bad because in one of my last posts I mentioned that 1970 PT was perhaps my least favorite storyline.

That really isn't the case ... at least there are major parts of many other storylines that I like far less than the current one (let's see, off the top of my head, I'd say Adam, the Liz blackmail scheme, the whole Nicholas Blair bit ...)  I remembered this once Bruno got out of the way and there was less emphasis on John Yeager or whatever his name is.  ;D  IMO, 1970 PT started off promising, but within a few episodes I began to nearly detest it, but after the aforementioned changes, I've been back to really, truly enjoying DS again for the past few weeks.

Lara Parker's talents are always an asset when she takes over, and she proves her versatility by making Alexis and Angelique very different characters.  And THIS Angelique ISN'T the same as the "real time" Angelique.  Quite a talented lady.

Add some good writing, too -- after a couple of especially good episodes I had to check the credits, and sure enough, Joe Caldwell was back as writer.

What a relief to get Barnabas back, too ... and if only we saw more of Carolyn and Will Loomis -- again, good characterizations.

Joan Bennett was in particularly good form yesterday when she saved Maggie from jumping from the window, and I found KLS's scenes to be actually emotionally wrenching.

I think it's clever how they have worked the "Rebecca" elements into the story, such as having Angelique encouraging Maggie to jump -- twisting our expectations that Hoffman -- the Mrs. Danvers character -- would be the one to do so.

I also loved the brief glimpse of the costume party -- if only they had had a budget and could have hired extras and really shown the party, how great that would have been.

I do have a question -- was this the only costume party on DS?  I seem to remember another one, but maybe I'm thinking of the one in HODS.

I know there's much more to come in this storyline ... and I'm glad I don't remember who killed Angelique!

Current Talk '03 II / Re:Maggie Collins, as seen by Grandma Moses
« on: July 22, 2003, 02:43:03 AM »
I think I mentioned this last time, too, but it looked to me like Maggie's portrait was done with pastels.

I, too, have been noticing the beautiful portrait of Angelique.

Close up, it seems to lose some of its subtlety, though, especially around the eyes and eyebrows I thought it looked slightly cartoonish (I mean that in an artistic sense, not to demean it).  Yet it both looks very much like Angelique and also seems to capture the character.

Current Talk '03 I / No Embalming in Collinsport?
« on: July 01, 2003, 03:45:33 AM »
I've always been bemused the way no one in Collinsport ever seems to be embalmed -- at least, if Angelique had been, wouldn't she have been pretty well preserved for the short amount of time she's been dead?

Also thought of this when Elizabeth was thought to be dead and in her special tomb.

It would have been easy enough for the writers to work in an explanation:  "Her last wishes included that she did not want to be embalmed," etc.

Yes!

I always liked Quentin's room, so was interested to see this.  I think there's now a door in a different location.  Wonder if it all has to do with parallel time ...
