Current Talk '06 I / Re: "Blood and Roses" and DS
« on: January 18, 2006, 05:43:42 AM »
I had never heard of "Blood and Roses" nor seen a Vadim film, but your description is intriguing ... I checked imdb and found that it is loosely based on "Carmilla."  Sounds luscious!  There are no merchandising links for either VHS or DVD format, unfortunately.  I wish there were another movie channel that aired films not owned by Turner.

Current Talk '06 I / Re: What is the name of that wine?
« on: January 18, 2006, 05:31:10 AM »
I know Amontillado was mentioned on the show so I think it likely that if a reference was made to a specific type of sherry in this scene, it was Amontillado.  True Amontillado comes from Jerez de la Frontera in the Andalucian region of Spain, but like Champagne, versions of it are produced elsewhere, probably including in California.  The writers likely wrote in Amontillado as an allusion to Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado."  Jonathan Frid gave a marvelous reading of this story which can be heard on his website.

You can find inexpensive (and good, IMO) Amontillados in the wine section; those produced in Jerez can be a bit pricey but are the best.

I have always had a fascination for the sets of DS and the irreplaceable ambiance that they always provided to the show.  Kudos to Sy Tomashoff and the fantastic set decorators and lighting folk that made it all possible.

There were some beautiful sets.  One I really loved, which could be added to this thread, I haven't mentioned yet because I can't think of what it's called.  It's the place where Barnabas hides out when he travels to 1897 - I don't have an episode guide to consult (I tried an online summary, but it wasn't mentioned), but I thought it was connected to a church, something like a parsonage or manse.  Anyway, the colors, lighting, and set all worked together beautifully.  It was such a neat idea to have Barnabas living there.

This was the most detailed description I've heard about Frid's role in the movie.  I had heard it was brief, and mute, but that was about it.

Probably if I had seen it at the time, I would have been disappointed, as Connie was, had I been watching it in anticipation of seeing "Barnabas."  But now as an adult, with greater knowledge of what's involved in acting, I'm sure I'd find it fascinating to watch.

she also had a small role in roman polanski's incredibly creepy film "the tenent".

I have the DVD of The Tenant but I've never watched it.  I didn't even know Shelly Winters was in it!

Calendar Events / Announcements '06 I / Jonathan Frid and Shelley Winters
« on: January 14, 2006, 11:53:05 PM »
Has Jonathan Frid ever talked about working with Shelley Winters, who sadly has passed away today?

I wish "The Devil's Daughter" would be released on DVD - I've never seen it.

Shelley Winters did some great scary, possibly Gothic, parts back in the early '70s, "The Devil's Daughter," "Revenge," "Whoever Slew Auntie Roo," etc.

Ooo, thanks for posting that picture, petofi - and for making it downloadable!  :D

Not to drive this into the ground, but that picture MB posted looks very similar to Rose Cottage.

I've been watching my tape with some of the episodes featureing Rose Cottage.  Was interested to hear Barnabas say "it's on Cumberland Road, just outside Collinsport."

what I've been reading about is more in the nature of a fantasy some MTW fans might have coming true.

I'm guessing that the big question is whether Michael T. Weiss takes off his shirt.  Yes, it appears he does.   :)

Going by the photographs, Cecile appears to be well cast.  (It could be that she takes off her shirt, too.)   :)

I hadn't noticed the video clips before.  I'm hoping that the clips are from an early stage in rehearsals (I'm talking about the scene between Valmont and Mertuel), because the scene seems lifeless and forced.  Why are they standing so far apart?  I get no sense of connection - sparks, attraction, wit - between the two, only empty space.  Of course this is only a minute from the entire production so I wouldn't presume to judge beyond that.

Gothick, regarding your speculation, I hadn't heard that about Valmont, although I hasten to admit that I haven't read the book yet.  I've had a copy of it for years and started it - thought it a great, breezy read for an 18th century novel, but got sidetracked before getting very far.  It would be interesting to follow up on your thought, because in the French TV production with Deneuve and Everett, a character says, "Valmont doesn't like women, he only uses them," or words to that effect.  I'd be interested to find out if the idea is developed further in the extended 270-minute version which did not air on TV.

A debate between the Impaler and the ultra, ultra-conservative Pawlenty ought to be entertaining ...

Unfortunately these minority party candidates don't seem to get invited to the big debates.

I can't speak for all Shadowphiles, but I've always considered Flora to be an in-law by the mere fact she had a son.  And he was a cousin of Quentins...wonder who her husband was....we never hear about another brother for Quentin and Gabrial.  And the fact that Daniel only had a sister (Millicent) means her husband couldn't have been a cousin to them/nephew to Daniel.  Interesting...

You're the only other person I know of who made that observation.  I remember posting about it in the past but I don't recall anyone commenting on what I said.  I checked my copy of the DS FAQ recently, and they have a family tree showing Flora Collins AS a Collins (i.e. by birth, not marriage).

I'm enjoying your further speculations but I don't remember the other family connections that well.

One thing I wonder about her name though is, was she named after Jonathan's mother Flora Frid as a sort of 'tongue-in-cheek' thing by DCP?!  ;)

I was wondering the same thing after reading the article about the Frid family posted elsewhere.   :)

Regarding my comment about Sky and Angelique's home on Little Windward Island, MB remarked:

If this is an example of a shabby wood shack

That is NOT what I remember.   [confused5]  Are you trying to drive my mind to distraction?   >:(  Remember those scenes when Jeb Hawkes is stalking the house when Carolyn is inside, and leaves a track of Leviathan footprints?  They showed the exterior of the house then, and it was what I would describe as a "shabby wood shack" (well, I may have taken some poetic license ...).

What you show, though is MUCH closer to how I envisioned the house.  But I don't remember seeing it that way on the show.

When I mentioned the "bizarre home of Charles Delaware Tate," I meant, of course, his home in 1970 (or whenever the present day story line was taking place).

Although my memory of a lot of specifics about storylines is fading alarmingly, my reference to "1849" was a typo for "1840."

So I'm not sure if Flora's home was Rose Cottage, but I think these were two different places.  I remember something about "the old Magruder place," whence I developed the theory that Flora Collins was born Flora Magruder.  I loved the interiors of that home (didn't Desmond live there, too) but can't remember if we ever saw the exterior.  Does anyone remember seeing the exterior?

It was Rose Cottage and yes, Desmond lived there as well.  ;)  They would show the exterior quite often.

Thanks for helping refresh my memory.  I wish I could see these episodes again, but my tapes are in storage.  I have about 3 tapes with me in my apartment, and I popped one in late last night.  In an amazing coincidence, considering what I had posted above about Rose Cottage and "the old Magruder place", the second episode on my tape (which I haven't viewed in at least a couple of years!) was the one were Barnabas discovers where/what Rose Cottage is - he tells Julia, quote, "it's the old Magruder house".

And yes, I clearly remember the exterior of the house, with its white pillars.  But I didn't remember that it was Flora and Desmond's home.  Wish I could put it all together in my mind, but I'd just have to see this entire sequence again.  Something to look forward to at a future date!  (This factored into my conclusion that Flora was a Magruder who married a Collins.  But another explanation for  them living in a house Barnabas refers to in the present day as the "old Magruder house" could be that it was sold to another family (named Magruder) sometime after the events of 1840.  Nevertheless, I do find it curious that Flora Collins is regarded by DS fandom to have been a blood Collins.  Not too likely, since Desmond's last name is Collins.  Unless she bore him out of wedlock.

I was going to come back here today and mention the house on Little Windward Island, though Andre DuPres has done so.

I imagined that house so vividly in my mind because I worked on a story that I never finished that's set there.  I could not accept the exterior shots of the house as truly being Angelique and Sky's home, which the exterior shots showed as a shabby wood shack.  No way!  Somehow, someone goofed and got the wrong shots!

it worked out this way for most of the supernatural plots.as soon as it was over everyone acted like it had never happened and in many cases never spoke of it or appeared to have any recollection of it whatsoever. ::)

I was always puzzled about that!  ::)

it's interesting to note that many of the main characters besides julia and willie actually did "know" barnabas' secret...and then convieniently "forgot" it when the plot dictated.

maggie knew.vicki knew.carolyn knew.david was highly suspisious and certainly on his way to knowing.but the plot dictated that all these characters "forget" it or at least have their attention otherwise focused.

I interpreted this differently.  Maggie, Vicki, and Carolyn were all under Barnabas' power at one time or another, and I just felt that he had a lingering, residual effect on them - I think this was hinted at though never explicitly stated.  They may not have consciously remembered their victimization.

I didn't think David was ever that close to the truth, but the most interesting case was Prof. Stokes.  Surely he suspected something !

OK, no longer talking about places where I'd personally like to live, but here are a couple of pretty spacious - but spooky - homes:

- Dr. Lang's house, where Adam was created

- the bizarre home of painter Charles Delaware Tate

I mentioned Rose Cottage from 1849 ... but what I really loved was Flora Collins' home.  My memory is hazy after only a few years I'm afraid, as in another thread where I mistakenly thought that Daphne Harridge and the children were calling back Quentin, when it was Gerard.

Somehow my cousin was listed as my sister in the obituary. Boy did that cause some talk since, as far as everyone knew, I was an only child.

Oh, FireRose, that is so awful.  Hopefully one can find some wry humor in such situations, especially with the distance of time.

Obituaries are notorious for introducing errors into the record, which makes them difficult to rely on when doing genealogical work.  In researching my great-grandfather, I knew the region he was from (in northeastern France) but not the town.  Two obituaries in two different newspapers gave two different towns.  One of them turned out to be correct, and I never could figure out how they came up with the other one since extensive research turned up nothing - no canton, diocese, department, whatever by that name seems to have ever existed!

And newspapers articles like the one cited, especially in small local publications, often have bewildering mistakes.  When I was home for the holidays, our local paper had a feature on a retired couple who were important in the musical community and who are friends.  The article referred more than once to their two "sons."  In fact, they have one son and one daughter.  Their daughter is named Roberta, whom they have always called "Bobby," and therein lies the explanation ...

One of the first articles I wrote was for a small local publication, and I made a mistake so embarrassing I won't even mention it.  I had interviewed the subject over the telephone and misheard (and then misreported) some information that was significant to the story.  Yikes.   :-[  So I do have some understanding of how mistakes are made, but still ...

It's good to learn more about Jonathan Frid from this discussion.  He sounds like a super guy.

Besides the ones I voted for (Collinwood and the Old House, present day, to which I belatedly add the house by the sea and the old mill), the one I thought of right away that isn't on the list:  Rose Cottage.
