I did decide to order it. A lot of people here must have ordered it after seeing this thread, because the status changed from "In Stock" to "Only 17 copies left" to "fulfilment by ... [an outside company]" in a matter of a couple of days last week. I received my copy in the mail yesterday. The sticker on it says "new," so hopefully that's the case. Haven't opened the packaging yet. I remember the Bi-Centennial and what an important time that was. It seemed that the country came together in a spiritied way ... everyone watched the "Bicentennial Minute," at least for the first few months they were broadcast.

I did see about the last 45 minutes or so. The acting was a bit dated, though the final scene was effective when Leslie Howard has returned from the cemetery in the present day, having discovered that the woman he loved in the past (in the 1790s) had died shortly after he met her in his journey through time.

I think the remake with Tyrone Power, "I'll Never Forget You," holds up better today, and it's available on DVD as part of a Tyrone Power boxed collection.

Interesting that Lovecraft was so enthused with the movie.

A film I have wanted to see for years which has never been released on VHS or DVD airs tonight for the first time on TCM. From the 1930s with Leslie Howard. The theme is time travel, and I recall that Gothick once mentioned this film as a possible inspiration for DS's 1795 storyline. I read the play which was somewhat reminiscent with a man in search of his ancestors. The play was inspired by an unfinished novel by Henry James, who was inspired in turn (I think) by H.G. Wells. Unfortunately, I'm still at work and with too much going on at the moment probably won't see much of it myself.

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice. I looked at the hotel's webpage and see that from Westchester County airport the options to the hotel are rental or cab ($45). I'm not planning on renting a car, so I'll have to go the cab route ... but perhaps there will be other people arriving Thursday evening as well who could share the fare.

I looked at the satellite view from Google Maps and I see what you mean about walking a highway to Lyndhurst -- I couldn't see any sidewalks, either. Uncle Roger's mention of bus service along Broadway should be an option, though. It does sound like more of a challenge going north into Tarrytown although again although perhaps the bus would be best.

Will IM you this evening, Teresa.

I am curious about this but don't know when I'd have time to watch it, so don't know whether to purchase or not ... was the series done on video or film? I notice that amazon has now raised the price.

Drive?!? Car?!? The only thing I was worried about was getting from the Westchester County Airport to the Doubletree Hotel in Tarrytown. I was planning to call the hotel to see if there is shuttle service and have been keeping my fingers crossed. As far as getting to Lyndhurst and Washington Irving's home, I thought those were within easy walking distance from the hotel ... or am I under a misapprehension? I do a lot of walking ordinarily so it might not be a problem.

I found my receipt in the envelope, luckily.

Sorry to hear that Gothick and many others won't be able to attend. I've only been able to attend three previous festivals since 2001, so I understand the disappointment. Although I wish there would be more merchandise at the festival, I'm really looking forward to simply being able to have some relaxing walks on the grounds of Lyndhurst and Washington Irving's home.

Current Talk '12 II / Re: Flora and Desmond Collins

I don't remember the details now, but I thought the obvious conclusion was that Mrs. Flora Collins was born a Magruder because they lived in the old Magruder mansion, didn't they? As far as which Collins she married, I don't know that it's possible to know for sure ... and it seems the writers left this vague.

I know I got a confirmation of payment in the mail some time back - I'll have to look for the envelope when I get home tonight ... I don't recall there being a ticket for the dinner in the envelope.

Current Talk '24 I / Re: Depp/Burton DARK SHADOWS Is In Release!!

It's good to get a variety of opinions from fans on this forum. Professor Stokes, thank you especially for your painstakingly detailed and careful critique ... it's more than enough for me to take my cue. And great to see Ben posting here!

Here's a review I saw in print this morning, which brought me to the forum again on my lunch break:

http://www.startribune.com/entertainment/movies/150971585.html
Excerpt:
"Dark Shadows" opens promisingly, downshifts after 30 minutes, and sputters into a meandering, momentum-free mess.

Ben makes an excellent point about those reviewing the movie who knew nothing about the original. I think I'll trust the reviews of long-time members of this forum, who have knowledge and discernment, over the "professional" reviewers.

Current Talk '12 I / Re: The three finalists for the role of Barnabas
« on: April 28, 2012, 05:29:33 AM »
That is really funny ... I think of Bert Convey as someone who was a guest on the Love Boat ... I don't know how the character of Barnabas was originally envisioned (and there's been a lot of disagreement about who "created" the character). But Jonathan Frid brought a melancholy to the role, a sense of tragedy, created an antihero, and came through with a powerful, Shakespearean delivery ... hard to imagine anyone else doing anything quite like it.

Current Talk '12 I / Re: Origins of the Original Music Box??
« on: April 28, 2012, 05:22:19 AM »
I remember KLS saying that it was a lovely, filagreed piece, but I don't think she said whether it was actually a music box or not. I think I've read on this forum that it wasn't actually a music box ... but can one believe everything one reads?

178
I've attended three festivals, and Mr. Frid was only at the last of the three. It never occurred to me that people wouldn't want to go to a festival because Mr. Frid wouldn't be there - and he has been as close to my favorite cast member as I could ever choose as a favorite.

179
A co-worker asked me when I came in to work this morning if I had heard about "our friend" who had died. I asked whom she meant. "Barnabas," was her reply. So many of us grew up with "Barnabas." Of course we know now that Jonathan Frid was not Barnabas, but rather was a versatile actor who sometimes felt burdened that he would always be associated first and foremost with Barnabas Collins. And that is because he played the role so brilliantly and believably. Jonathan Frid - indelible actor; gentleman; a man who valued his privacy, yet was beloved by many.

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 I / Re: Mad Men meets DS?
« on: April 14, 2012, 06:20:46 PM »
That's amazing, midnite! I had been thinking about posting something a couple of weeks ago about '60s nostalgia and "Mad Men" after Newsweek did a cover story on just that topic. Even the ads in the magazine were done to resemble advertising from that era. At the same time, I had come across an article online about a history grad student who had analyzed the use of language on "Mad Men" and found that there is a lot of terminology being used on the show that was not used in the '60s and '70s. Apparently the writers are too young to realize that.

I've always thought that there was a high level of language on DS, that the writers were very literate.

Anyway, it's fun to learn that "Mad Men" may be making a "DS" connection - even if they're only alluding to it through the title an episode.

I haven't actually seen much of the show.
