and what happened between barnabus and her in france.  I get it that they were romantically involved, but why is he no longer interested

Akhet, I agree with VAM that you may want to read "Angelique's Descent," which is Lara Parker's interpretation/conception of Angelique's and Barnabas' past in Martinique (not France).

Some of Ms. Parker's ideas may be at variance with what will later be revealed on the show -- much later, like about four years from now.  Since you don't want the details, you'll just have to wait  :-X ... it's something worth waiting for, though, IMO!

As far as why he's no longer interested, that's something you'll have to figure out on your own.  Many people have brief romantic or sexual flings.  The fact that he is a gentleman and she is a servant probably plays a role.  Oh yes.

Very good episode.

I was curious about Barnabas and Jeremiah meeting to duel with no one else present.

In all the movies I've seen, they always have "seconds."

Hi, Bette!  :D

Well, since Midnite posted that "bar gang" photo, I thought I'd better respond ...  ;)

I truly wish I could go this year, but right now it doesn't look too likely.  Finances.  There's hope, but it's not looking too good.

In defense of Victoria Winters  :):

When confronted with Trask, she apparently did NOT blurt out: "Mr. [Tony] Peterson!  What are you doing in that getup?!" *   ::)

Actually, I don't think we saw her first impressions on meeting Trask, unfortunately -- the scene just opened in her room, with Trask already grilling her.

And, maybe she never actually met Tony Peterson ... surprising how memory can fail one regarding events of only a couple of weeks ago (mine, AND Victoria's  :-[ ).

Which reminds me, something I've wanted to ask for ages ... whatever happened to Vicky's earlier lawyer love, Frank Garner?

Final thought:  I've mentioned this previously, but the 1991 series writers definitely made a big improvement in their presentation of Vicky (i.e., perhaps somewhat naive, but not an idiot)  ;D .

* Later edit, per Luciaphil's response to Ben's thread:  "Why are you wearing that shovel hat?"   ;D

Another recent school story in the news that says something about today's values -- a teacher in Kansas (I think that was the state) failed a number of students for plagiarizing (sp).  Acting on parental complaints, the school board ordered the teacher to give the students passing grades, even though they acknowledged the students had cheated.  The teacher quit her job.  I don't blame her.

Current Talk '02 I / Re: Favorite character in 1795
« on: March 06, 2002, 06:41:26 AM »
1795 does have some of the best developed, multifaceted characters of the series, and perhaps the most complex characterizations.

Before this question was posed, I had been thinking about Ben Stokes and how his character grows throughout the storyline.  In many ways he eventually embodies many of the attributes of a true gentleman (despite his background and station), and his character will prove to be more admirable than some of those of higher social status who were considered "gentlemen."

spoiler

Barnabas is another of my choices because he not only proves to be a true gentleman at many crucial points, but he will also prove to be a tragic hero.

I think I agree that Barnabas did not know himself how to react to Angelique when she first came to see him, but it does not make sense to me that he did not know she was the Dupres's maid, particularly when I assume he went to the duPres plantation to conduct business with Andre....

***(can't figure out how to use the shading/boxes)****

LF, what made you think that Barnabas didn't know that Angelique was the Dupres's servant?

I think he was surprised to see her when he opened the door, but I don't think that meant he had no idea she was connected with the Dupres family!

Nice picture of the dog, Ringo!  BTW, who was the old guy holding her?  ;D  ;D

Seriously, though, it's funny, but believe it or not, I was just thinking about your doggie the other night.  For some reason I happened to remember the picture of her that you posted or linked us to about a year ago on the VN board...  I remember thinking that she was a border collie.

I had a very deprived childhood -- no dog  :'(  .... And Dark Shadows was banned -- not because it was supernatural or scary or anything, but because of violence!  >:(

Now I'm grown up and can watch DS any time I want to, even if it's at 3 in the morning!

Wow!  It's going to take a while to learn all the bells and whistles, but I'm sure it'll be well worth it!

;D

I especially like the way once you open a thread you can read ALL the replies at once!

Midnite, it looks like you heard my request long ago about being able to copy and paste messages from the forum into a Word file and be able to read them without changing fonts, etc.  :D  That's a big help if one isn't able to print out things whenever one wishes (for example, if one is using a public computer).

Guess I better read the "Help" topics and find out what more there is to learn!  Like what the heck are YABBC tags!

I would have added this to Luciaphil's original thread, and my costume comment under Happybat's, but with all the activity on the board recently :) it seems that threads only a week old are already being removed. [sadb]

First, a question: Is Angelique the maid of Countess du Pres or Angelique? [sadg] I was surprised to hear that Angelique will be returning to Martinique with Natalie and Andre after Josette is married, so apparently she is the countess' maid, not Josette's personal maid. I must have had Lara Parker's novel more clearly in mind, where Angelique was hired to be a companion and maid for Josette when they were children (and also sisters, but that's another story. :)

Later in the original series, Natalie says that she knew Angelique's mother, and also that she knew Angelique when she was an "uninteresting child." However, given what we know about Angelique, [spoiler]actually having lived in earlier Colonial times as Miranda du Val, I have rationalized that the older Countess simply referred to the sweet young slip of a thing Angelique as "a child." Apparently Miranda/Angelique was somehow achieved immortality when she was around 20, I'd guess. Any ideas on how the apparently innocent Miranda became the evil Angelique? Lara Parker did a good job investigating the psychological possibilities of how someone becomes evil, but she ignored Angelique's history as Miranda and instead had her born and growing up on Martinique.[/spoiler]

Also, I must have missed some dialogue here -- did Josette arrive in New York after a sea voyage from Martinique, or from Paris?

I must say I'm getting a rather perverse delight in watching Angelique at work here - those eyes are real killers.  ::) ::)

Has anyone noticed how the lighting in 1795 seems to make everyone's faces thinner (hollow cheeks)? :) :) I noticed this first with Nancy Barrett, then Vicki, and today with KLS. :)

This is probably just me, but I always have a hard time remembering that Jeremiah is Barnabas' uncle rather than his brother. For some reason it just seems to me like they should be brothers. :) Interestingly, that is the way the 1991 revival series did it. However, having two brothers in love with the same girl seems more of a cliche. Maybe that's what the original series writers were trying to avoid.

A note on the men's costumes - Comparing the 1790 costumes in the 1991 series with what we're seeing now, I'd have to say the 1991 series costumes were much more attractive and flattering to the men. For one thing, the pants were - ahem - looser  :o ; also, the colors are more monochromatic rather than the variegated colors we see in the original series. Does anyone know which series had the more "authentic" men's costumes for this period? The fabrics in the 1991 series also looked more luxurious to this untrained eye.  ::)

This is probably one instance where the 1991 series improved upon the original. [a0d0]
