It almost seems to me that this "farewell fest" idea might be connected with the earlier uprising against the change of the festival date to Labor Day weekend.  I tend to be cynical about more and more as time goes by so I'm sure I could be wrong.

Your theory sounds as good as any, Castlebee.  They might have decided to throw in the towel after taking a lot of heat after the switch to Labor Day weekend.  Or that could have been a deciding factor -- the straw that broke the camel's back.  If personal factors were what's behind the decision, then we'll obviously never be told.

Yes, several of the sets were redressed and reused or did double duty.  The set for David's bedroom was also the tower room set.  The study set was Roger's bedroom set, but it both case the rooms were redressed to look some different.

Do you agree with the theory that David's room is the room directly below "the tower room," as some claim?

I always thought that if that were the case, someone would have mentioned at some point that David's room was located in the tower.

If it's simply a matter of re-using a set, then maybe we aren't to infer that David's room is in the tower.

Did anyone notice if they showed the exterior of Sky's and Angelique's house?  If it was shown, was it the stately white mansion with the pillars, as we saw briefly on Friday (one of those DS slide deals), or was it the tacky little cabin in the Maine woods that we'll be seeing more of?

I didn't see it so Im assuming it was no shown on that day.  I had missed Fridays episode so I was looking forward to seeing the exterior of the house.

Deb

Thanks for responding, Deb. The house looked something like Rose Cottage from 1840, if you're familiar with that.

You know, it could have been handled much worse.

They could have made a surprise announcement at the upcoming festival that it would be the last one.

Current Talk '03 I / Re:Barnabas' Change of Heart
« on: May 07, 2003, 12:22:12 AM »
Barnabas' true change of heart is still to come.  The whole Leviathan dream sequence episode was something they threw in literally at the last minute (as I recall it, the episode was taped very close to air date) because so many fans were writing in and complaining that they were having difficulties with "evil" Barn.  (As an adult viewer, at least, I find him a lot more compelling than "good" Barn.)  The episodes that follow that big dream sequence show don't really follow up the theme of Barnabas having a change of heart because they had already been scripted and taped BEFORE the episode chronicling Barn's encounter with Adlar and Marshina, Queen of Darkness.

You're right ... I jumped the gun on this.

Adlar and Marshina???  [confused_ani]

Quote
However, 1840 she does not know Julia and doesn't remember being in the future, perhaps because it hasn't happened to her yet.  This Angelique is more primitive, closer to her 1795 self, and therefore very nasty when the 1840 storyline begins; we see no sign of the helpful ally that we last knew in 1970.  If it were the 1970 version that he was dealing with, his actions would make more sense, but at this point, (1840) Angelique has assisted nobody and I really don't see any reason why Barnabas would feel warmly toward her.

Professor Stokes, you have tracked these time changes far more closely than I have ... and possibly more closely than the writers did ...

You know I tend to get a bit analytical about things, too, but with respect to the time-travelling conundrums, I've been more of a casual viewer. From an academic perspective, I would say your argument is convincing ... but from watching the show chronologically, the emotional message I get is that we are to gradually see Angelique in more sympathetic terms.

So I'm listening to my heart, not my head!

Very, very good insight, Raineypark!  Your theory adds much more dimension to Amanda's character ...

Personally, I'll take Ms. McKecknie's "Q-u-e-n-t-i-n" whinings over Terry Crawford's painful-to-listen to "Q-u-e-n-t-i-n"s (with accompanying pained facial expressions)!  (I was almost relieved when she took a dive off Widow's Hill ...)

I have a question, though, regarding that "deal" with Mr. Best.  Why would she have needed a deal to stay young and have an extended life?  I had assumed she had that all along, being a supernatural creation of Charles Delaware Tate's painting.

Well, she was helpful already in 1897 ... but it does seem that Angelique became a much more sympathetic character during the Leviathan sequence.  The events in Leviathan helped pave the way for Angelique's eventual acceptance by Barnabas, in 1840, I believe, though with a tragic outcome.  I argued during that storyline that we had been gradually prepared for their eventual reconciliation.

I am anxious to see this week's episodes. Friday's second episode showed what I assume to have been the exterior of the house.  I'll have to replay this, but it looked like a stately white house with white pillars.  I hadn't seen this exterior shot before ... and it isn't too far off my conception of Angelique's home on Little Windward Island in my unfinished Angelique story.  Later, however, the exterior shots were of some cheap-looking natural-wood exterior paneling, something that looked like a cabin that might have a cookstove for a kitchen ...  I have refused to accept that those upcoming exterior shots of the house were actually of Angelique and Sky's home.  Someone somewhere got it wrong!

I'm puzzled about this discrepancy (unless I'm somehow wrong about this) and will have to stay tuned ...

It sounds like you went about this the right way -- beginning as friends and getting to know the other person slowly over time ... rather old-fashioned in a (good) Jane Austen-ish sort of way!

Elizabeth's line that grabbed me was (and I misquote):

"Did you really think that I would ever have wanted you back here?"

Now that was real ... (I've heard that exact same tone of voice in real life a few times ...).

I don't mean to make too much of this, but a lot of the acting on DS -- not to mention daily soaps in general -- is "canned."  Moments like this are worth pointing out, in my book ... as examples of real emotion, real feeling (I wonder what life experience Miss Bennett may have been calling to mind to show such authentic emotion ... ).

And oh, I do remember that wooden spoon ... accompanied by the tone of voice mentioned above ...

 :o

(Fortunately, it was more of a threat in our home than an actual instrument of punishment ...)

Current Talk '03 I / Barnabas' Change of Heart
« on: May 01, 2003, 04:03:20 AM »
It's possible I've missed someone's post about this, but I'm surprised that no one seems to have mentioned anything about yesterday's very pivotal Leviathan episode.

The second episode yesterday was interesting on many levels, with all of the dreams ... though I'm not certain how well it was all executed.  I ended up being rather confused as to what was dream and what was reality -- but maybe that was the intention (like stepping into a Dario Argento flick?  ;)

I remember last time this aired I defended Barnabas' change of heart as a believable character development, but this time I'm not so sure.  On second viewing, this did seem rather abrupt -- which is understandable when you know that the writers/producers changed tracks at this point in response to viewer complaints about Leviathan.

Ironically, these first weeks were probably the best part of the Leviathan storyline.

There's still some good parts to come -- especially with the return of a certain witch -- but by the end the whole storyline falls apart with a deadly splat ...

Just my opinion ... others will disagree.

Apparently the copying feature has been disabled since I last visited the board.

Something I said?   :(

BTW -- apologizes for the inaccuracies in my previous post, e.g. Raineypark was doing something different from the copying I do ...

Also, I do know, of course, that "creative" writing efforts are not allowed on this site, but I was just using that as an example of how one might want to be very careful about what one posts on the Internet ... it seems to be up for grabs!

I must be oblivious, because it certainly didn't look like a wig to me.

In fact, the young actor reminds me a lot of my nephew (I know I mentioned this last time, too).  And, come to think of it, my hair was exactly that color when I was his age ... (believe it or not to those who know me now!).

Have I been breaking the guideline by doing this without first getting express permission from the person who sent me the message? Or is it okay because I don't share it with anyone else?

What you're doing is perfectly fine, Rainey, because it's for your own personal use. Our concern is only with people who copy things from the forum and then circulate them on another forum or mailing list without our poster's permission. Contrary to their belief, just because something is posted on the Web doesn't mean that it's Public Domain - particularly when it's posted somewhere that at this point is closed to anyone other than registered members (though that situation will hopefully change sooner rather than later). Copyright law covers the Web just as it does printed media, as these people would learn if they took the time to research the issue....

It's not pleasing to hear that this may have been happening on this forum!

Like Raineypark, I copy and paste many comments on particular topics into Word documents for my personal files and reference on Dark Shadows.  I don't understand how anyone could think they would be free to post someone else's comments elsewhere on the Web!

IMO, this argues strongly for keeping this forum closed ... it's easy enough to register, and it seems to keep some trouble out.

Thanks for bringing up the point about copyrighted material.  Sadly, this is a subject not much understood by the general public it seems.

Reading this thread reinforces my gut instinct not to post something like my translation of the Comte de St.-Germain sonnet on a discussion board!
