I can never figure out error messages - why don't they say what they really mean? I'm sure that forbidden and permission bit has nothing to do with it!
Actually, they had everything to do with it - and nothing to do with it - both at the same time. (How's that for being confusing? But stay with me...)
The reason people we're receiving:
ForbiddenYou don't have permission to access / on this server.
was because after the problems started yesterday, I tried to upload a new version of the forum's index.html file containing a message to alert people about them (the message that was displayed until about two hours ago), but when I tried to do that, I was told that I couldn't upload because the server's hard disk had run out of space. So, instead of uploading the new file, the server erased the existing index.html file. The forum is hosted on a server running Linux (not
Windows!!), and on a Linux system no one can view the contents of the root directory (that's what the "/" part of the error message stood for) using a browser (you have to use an FTP client, like WS_FTP, and have the username and password to log in). So, when it said you were forbidden to access the root directory, that's exactly what you were (unintentionally) trying to do. But the reason the forum had been acting wacky and the reason I wanted to put the new index.html file up in the first place had nothing to do with any of that.
