Current Talk '06 I / Re: Old Soaps

They've been airing AW on Soapnet and there's a fairly loyal crowd on places like TWoP. And same with RH. I think you'd be surprised at how many people would tune into see old episodes of AMC or GL or whatever. Heck, I don't care if they're in B&W. I'd watch.
For a while, I guess about a year and a half ago, SoapNet was airing RH during a time when I was home between classes either stuffing my face or putting in some time on the stepper. I'd never seen the show before, but I thought Delia was a riot, and I confess that I did try to arrange things so I could be doing something that allowed me to watch it when it was on.  ::)

Was there any media coverage?
The media coverage beforehand basically just advertised the event, but there was an interview piece with Henry Winkler in one of the LA area publications. I can't remember which one now.

There are photos from the event on WireImage.com, and David is included. This was going to be included in my next announced site update, but I'm a little overwhelmed with other bs at the moment.

(By the way, the people who organized this were very nice folks. They actually took time to email the webmasters of various fan sites who plugged this event to thank them for doing so. You don't see that very often.)

For anyone who's interested, I've added some screen grabs of Lara Parker's 1975 appearance on Police Woman to my DS Alumni Site. She plays a hooker.  :)

Calendar Events / Announcements '05 II / Re: OT: AOL Is Getting In2TV
« on: March 09, 2006, 06:11:02 PM »
AOL has a beta version on In2TV available here. The full version will supposedly launch on March 15.

For the Selby fans, the only Falcon Crest episodes online right now appear to be from the first season before Richard Channing arrived, but they do have the unaired pilot episode with Jane Wyman sporting a gray wig that looks like something crawled up and died on her head.  ;D

As long as we're on the subject of this film, I occasionally get emails to my web site about it. One person wanted to know whether Gordon Parks was responsible for taking the publicity stills himself. (I haven't the slightest clue, but I doubt it.) Usually, though, the questions are about what happened to the real-life cops upon which the film is based.

Robert Hantz, portrayed in the film by David Selby, was charged with possessing marijuana cigarettes while on vacation, I believe outside the country, and subsequently resigned his position with the NYPD in 1975. Greenberg and Hantz always maintained that they were the subject of various threats and conspiracies because of jealousy within the NYPD over their success and unorthodox methods and, obviously, because their conviction rate made them unpopular with some segments of the community.

David Greenberg, portrayed by Ron Leibman, went on to serve in the NY State Assembly. He was convicted in 1990 on federal conspiracy and fraud charges because of inflating loss claims following burglaries and a fire at a video distribution company he owned and sentenced to serve four years in prison. At the time, he intended to appeal the conviction, but I don't know what became of the appeal.

The real Greenberg and Hantz had cameos in the film and were involved in MGM's press events when the film was released. There are some stills, grabs, and additional stuff related to the film on my site.

MVD (Music Video Distributors) announced Super Cops as a forthcoming DVD title within the past few years, but it never showed up via any legitimate outlets, and they have since removed it from their product list. There are DVD copies of the film floating around on places like eBay, and a friend who bought one of these insists it's not a bootleg, but I have my doubts, especially since he says the picture quality is not good. He described a static line running across the screen, which, to me, sounded like a tracking issue with a VHS to DVD transfer.

Super Cops shows up from time to time on Turner South -- because it's part of the MGM library, not because it has squat to do with the South except maybe to confirm the stereotype of NYC as a den of iniquity.  ;D

I never saw a resemblance before, but with her upswept hairdo, Charlize was giving off an "Angelique vibe" tonight.
It was definitely the hairdo, but I thought the same thing. I really need to get out of the house more.  ;D

The original location has to be vacated by October of this year. The city was supposed to help them find a new location, but what they offered wasn't satisfactory. There's actually a current news article online about it:

The thing that pisses me off the most is that everbody in southland thinks I am from Boston. And THAT is a whole other accent.
Rest assured it is no different for someone from the south who moves a little further north and has to hear that her accent sounds like she is from Texas or Austrailia.  ;)

David Selby is featured in the trailer for Unknown. Unfortunately, whoever created the Quicktime file must've thought the title of the film is Unheard because the volume is so low as to be inaudible for most folks.
I'm now hearing that this trailer is not really supposed to be online.  :-X  The production company had a trailer on their site, and this is the version that the Jim Caviezel fan site got hold of at some point and now has posted (with crappy sound), but the production company has since removed the trailer from their site. Apparently, the Weinstein Co., which holds the U.S. distribution rights to the film, is quite particular about posting trailers for their films on the web, and it's not supposed to be posted anywhere yet.

Yes, Don Knotts did voice work for The Griffin and the Minor Canon, which featured David Selby as the voice of the Griffin. Each actor recorded his/her vocals separately, so, while they may have been in a scene together (I can't remember off the top of my head), they were not in the studio together. Don Knotts and Soupy Sales have the distinction of being the only two actors in the project whose animated characters are drawn to resemble them.

WV Public Television has pretty much gutted their official site for the project. There used to be photos of Sales' and Knotts' characters somewhere on the web. I'm not sure if they were on that site, but I don't have a link handy to a site that has them.

There's another funny story about this project. The producers were looking for information about what exactly a "minor canon" is so that they could include it in the teaching materials. Their web search turned up my Selby site because I had read about the project in WV newspapers online and posted a blurb about it on the News page. At some point, they showed the site to Selby, and that's how he found out about it. (He's not exactly an avid web surfer.) The producer/animator also contacted me as the film was being released to thank me for the publicity, and we've stayed in touch. Are we all bored yet?  [b071]

I thought the scenes leading up to the act in question were some of the best in the 1897 storyline.
I am always struck by the scene between Quentin and Barnabas in the secret room when Quentin comes to realize that Barnabas has a secret problem of his own.
A few months ago, a book was published by the Appalachian Education Initiative to highlight West Virginians in the arts. Selby and Knotts are both included, and Knotts recorded a radio spot for the project that is included on their web site. If you check out the Artist List, then you can see the specific towns where a number of famous actors, writers, and directors from WV were born or that they called home.
