At the risk of being accused of blasphemy, I thought I'd also point out that Amazon is having a sale on MGM DVD titles, and the Dark Shadows Revival set is selling for 60% off the suggested retail price.

Calendar Events / Announcements '06 II / Joanna Going on CSI on 11/16
« on: November 16, 2006, 04:41:14 AM »
Apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere. I just caught a commercial tonight for tomorrow night's episode of CSI. Joanna Going, who played Victoria Winters in the 1991 DS, will be a guest star. Apparently she plays identical twins who are murder victims. The episode is titled "Happenstance," and you can watch the promo on the CBS web site.

CSI airs at 9:00 PM Eastern on CBS. Check your local listings.

Turgeon came across more as a schoolteacher or adjunct professor.
I hope to hell I'm not that big of a dork.

There's some updated information about this film on the official Selby site, including word that it is available all this month on demand to some cable subscribers and a link to a clip that features Selby.

For the Netflix crowd, you can now save this film to your queue, but the release date hasn't been posted yet. Some sources indicate it will be in December. Others mention January.

LA Times Review:
That's pretty typical of the reviews for the film. One point that isn't raised here but that comes up elsewhere is that it would've made a better play than a film. Despite all the flash of the IFC Films and Weinstein web sites, frankly, the best source of information on the film has been screenwriter Matthew Waynee's MySpace page.

Oh, I can so top these if only my roomate would let me...
What's the bit that Letterman uses before Stupid Pet Tricks and Stupid Human Tricks? Ladies and gentlemen, this is an exhibition, not a competition. Please, no wagering.  ;D

That last link appears to be dead except for the cached pages.
Unfortunately, it had to be pulled because it was being hit left and right with all manner of spam and porn posts, and I really didn't want to give my life over to deleting messages and links related to hot sex with barnyard animals.  (It cuts into the time I usually devote to actually having hot sex with barnyard animals.  ;D )

Testing. 1, 2, 3... / Re: Internet Explorer 7
« on: November 08, 2006, 02:25:35 AM »
The fun never ends. IE7 is also causing error messages on startup for users who have installed software provided by their DSL service -- Motive Smartbridge, versions of which are bundled with SBC/Yahoo Internet software among others. It's a "known" issue, and the fix is relatively simple (renaming all instances of psapi.dll that are not in the Windows folder), but there's no telling how many users are going to be affected by it. It's more of an annoyance than a functionality problem. Nevertheless, it's irritating.

On the sidewalk outside the old studio. They'll be setting up a tv and dvd player on an A/V cart so we can watch the same clips over and over. Get there early for a good spot.  >:D

It just occurred to me that perhaps poor Lara suffers from "leaf envy" because she lives in California.

I know I would be sad to live through an October without leaves.......[vryevl]

LOL. You know, the sad thing is that she warned us about the tree imagery. Ever since her book has had a title, at DS events, she would smile and say, "It's about trees." Most of us simply assumed it was a bad pun on the title. Turns out, it wasn't.  [hall2_wink]

I keep trying to think of a movie that might have influenced DS. But gosh darn it, I just wasn't alive before DS, during DS, or even right after DS. So that pretty much disqualifies me from this category.
That's not much of an excuse.  ;) Your qualifications have less to do with age than with your familiarity with movies.

There is one film that had a major lasting influence on later DS strorylines, and I'm surprised no one has thought of this idea before!  The film is one the DS writers probably saw during its original release in 1958: Vertigo!  The whole bit about Barnabas trying to recreate Josette by molding Maggie Evans in the image of his lost love is a definite homage to the Hitchcock classic.  Substitute Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak with Jonathan Frid and KLS and you'll get the point.  Barnabas was always trying to find a new Josette for most of the show's run: Maggie, Vicki, Rachel, Lady Kitty- it's amazing he stopped when Roxanne entered the picture.
It's been thought of before.  :) I used Vertigo a few years ago in my freshman English class, and I remember having discussions with my DS friends at the time about the similarities. I didn't post about it here because I can't remember a lot of the specifics from the film, and, frankly, it was such a rotten teaching experience that I probably blocked it purposely. Unfortunately, the typical freshman can't seem to deal with the deliberately slow pacing of portions of the film.

Another DS connection here . . . Kim Novak appeared on Falcon Crest with David Selby as a character pretending to be someone she wasn't, someone who was dead. There were several references to her Vertigo role, including a scene shot in front of the Golden Gate bridge.

Chevy Chase:  Quentin - stumbling around with his brandy snifter.
This is getting a little bit off topic, but Chevy Chase guests on Law & Order tonight in what's being billed as his first dramatic role. It's loosely based on Mel Gibson's DUI arrest. Then again, I guess seeing how Chase handles this could affect some of the responses in this thread.  [hall2_smiley]

Actually, what that Halloween pumpkin represents couldn't be farther removed from office supplies if it tried to be.  [hall2_smiley]  But explaining what it represents would be telling - and if people should have come to know anything about the way I generally operate around here, it's that I normally like people to figure things out for themselves.  [hall2_wink]  And I've placed two very big clues on the forum to do just that.  [hall2_tongue]
I assumed it's your tribute to Running with Scissors, which, when you heard it had some connection to Dark Shadows, you thought it was about some fan running to cut off Roger Davis' hair so he'd stop touching it.  [hall2_grin]

The Uninvited (1944) : A brother and sister live in a great mansion on a cliffside by the sea. They are haunted by  mysterious and sad female ghost who's presence is felt by the scent of lilacs.
Actually, it was mimosa.
Drink enough of them and it could happen to anyone.  [8285]
