I've probably mentioned this here before, but, if you're interested in the short story upon this episode is based, which is quite different, you can find it online in several places, including here:

As you may recall, when Jonathan Frid passed away, David Selby posted "A Letter to Jonathan" on his web site. He later recorded the text of that letter while he was working on a play in San Diego so that it could be presented at the Dark Shadows event in Tarrytown this summer. The Dark Shadows Festival has now provided that photo/audio presentation to David Selby's official web site so that it can be shared with fans who were unable to attend the event:

There was an error in the shipping rates for books purchased in sets. (They were too high.) This was corrected today.  [hall2_smiley]

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 II / Re: Reporting from Tarrytown

I neglected to mention that the opening to the tribute for Jonathan Frid was a recorded reading/video from David Selby. His words were beautifully expressed and ended to the effect that the night is long, but candles burn on in the night. I would like to get a copy of what he wrote.
The recording was made in San Diego a couple of weeks ago. The words are drawn from a letter to Jonathan that was posted on David Selby's web site:

Word is that the audio/video will eventually make its way online via some official channel.

Here's a local media article with some photos of the event. Be sure to click "Show Caption" in the sideshow.

There is a version of a trailer for the movie that someone has recorded off screen and posted on YouTube. It's unclear when/where it was shown:

A 12-minute sneak peek video has hit the net. It discusses the significance/influence of Miller's work as well as some of the storyline. Interview and recording footage of David Selby is included.

Does anyone know why it's 'direct to DVD'?
All of the Warner Bros. DC Comics animated films are released direct to DVD. Apparently, they don't feel that theatrical releases will go over very well. I realize that "direct to DVD" has a certain stigma attached to it, but, especially when you're dealing with a niche market, it often has nothing to do with the quality of the product. Warner/DC puts a lot of work into their animated films.

David Selby's blog post on the new movie is back up after some tweaks. It does contain spoilers:

I would have to conclude that no one under 70 saw the movie and that I was the youngest person to ever watch it.

That's very telling.  I mentioned in previous posts, when I saw it (two times), the overwhelming, vast majority of those in the seats were what would be considered "middle-aged" (in their  late forties and up).

The comment that's being quoted here was in reference to the film Cold Mountain to illustrate the dangers of drawing conclusions about audiences based on attendance at any one screening of a film.

It wasn't the case with the first screening of Dark Shadows that I attended with the Central Florida DS Fan Club, and it wasn't the case at the second screening I attended (because no one was there other than me and my sister).

I wouldn't read too much into the removal of advertising from billboards, bus shelters, etc. A lot of that ad space is purchased in advance for a limited period of time to coincide with the opening of a film and then it is removed.

Similarly, anecdotal evidence about the number of people in the theater at any given performance can be misleading. Otherwise, based on seeing Cold Mountain in the theater during a matinee several years ago, I would have to conclude that no one under 70 saw the movie and that I was the youngest person to ever watch it.  [ghost_cheesy]

I went to a Tuesday 12:45 pm IMAX screening of Dark Shadows this week, and my sister and I were the only people in the theater; however, (a) that particular theater is not anywhere near a shopping mall and (b) many of the local schools had not let out for the summer at that point.

The theater is beside an interstate, and they purchase space on the rotating billboard at the nearest exit. It currently features Dark Shadows.
