Current Talk '08 II / Re: Q for el Presidente...

My vote goes for the graveyard caretaker.  He pretty much sums up politics today.
I was thinking more along the lines of Mr. Juggins.

Calendar Events / Announcements '08 II / KLS and Selby on PBS last night
« on: September 15, 2008, 03:03:21 AM »
As previously announced in Shadowgram, Kathryn Leigh Scott and David Selby were among the 1960s celebrities appearing during last night's PBS nationwide pledge drive broadcast of The 60's Live: My Generation: My Music.

Click here to see KLS. Click here to see Selby.

Not to knock Eva Cassidy at all because she is freaking amazing, but, if you're surveying different renditions, another one worth a listen is Rosanne Cash's:

She's never recorded it, but she's performed it live at least twice in the UK when she's had the backing of Celtic musicians. (This won't come up in a search because whoever posted it lists the song title as "Seas Run Dry.")

Burns is outside of my period, but critics have suggested that he simply lifted an existing folk song without any restructuring. Burns himself referred to the poem as "a simple old Scots song which I had picked up." In other words, if you're under the impression that someone took Burns' poem and set it to music, it's actually a case of Burns taking song lyrics and presenting them as a poem.

I don't know. I keep looking for job postings that say, "Attention to detail is not necessary," but I'm not seeing them. I must be looking too carefully.  [ghost_grin]

Thanks, MB. Apparently, this isn't the first date-related blunder that TNT has made with the show. I've read elsewhere that on the day before the show premiered, the countdown to the premiere on the show's web site was a week off. Nice.

337
Now I'm being told that the original September 22 listing is correct, but some Turner sites list September 15, so you might want to record that episode just to be on the safe side.  [confused5a]

"Richie Richer," the episode in which Selby appears, airs on Monday, September 22, at 10:00 pm ET/PT.
They've switched a couple of episodes around so that the TNT press site is now showing this episode as airing on September 15.

I've been in contact with the store this morning. As with all of David Selby's scheduled book signings, no tickets are needed. No registration is required. The event is free and open to the public.

(Gothick -- Perhaps you have The Coop confused with the Harvard Book Store, a separate, privately-owned store that does regularly charge to attend off-site author appearances.)

341
To Jennifer, if you see this--you might need to get a ticket, either by going to the store, or by signing up via their website.
The store makes absolutely no mention of tickets or a required sign-up for any of their author events on their web site, and this would run counter to all of the information that I've been given by the person who arranged the event.

342
The series premieres on Monday, September 1, at 10:00 pm ET/PT.
Just a reminder for anyone who is interested in starting from the beginning and watching the 3 episodes that will precede Selby's.

343
The correct time for the Selby signing in Hagerstown is 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

David Selby will discuss and sign copies of his novel, Lincoln's Better Angel, on Friday, September 19, at 7:00 pm in Cambridge, MA.

Harvard Square Coop
Level 3
1400 Massachusetts Ave.
Cambridge, MA 02238
617-499-2000

Lincoln's Better Angel
was inspired by an event the author read about in the Washington Post. The story he creates reflects on the personal impact of war and historical perspective.

A walk with President Abraham Lincoln and Vietnam veteran Charles Huggins through Washington, D.C. on a hot Fourth of July night becomes a walk through history. Layering time, grief, humor, and fantasy, Selby presents a story that is both moving and engaging.

Lincoln's Better Angel is published by Mayhaven Publishing.
