Rumors of "DS nuts" are greatly exaggerated. Do they exist? Probably. But I've attended many Fests, and I've yet to actually encounter one of them. ;)

I'm having a hard time choosing my favorite nut -- the fan who told me she had a room in her house painted the color of David Selby's eyes, the fan who told me she had the words of "Shadows of the Night" painted on her bedroom wall, or the fan who tried to follow me into my hotel room because he apparently thought it was one of the actor's trysting spots.

I guess the worst is the one who has 50 MB web site on David Selby. Talk about needing to get a life!  ;)

How on earth could "nothing" ever have come of it?  He wasn't reprimanded for endangering the safety of a class full of students?  The University wasn't cited for the incident by the Fire Department? None of the parents sued?  None of the parents tried to have him KILLED?!!!!!

Since the prof was highly popular among both students and alumni and was also very active in the local theatre where he was a constant favorite and considering that the smoke generated by the incident was not enough to set off the fire alarms, they had a hard time finding anyone who was actually in the room who found it upsetting. The girls thought it was hilarious.

As far as I know, the fire department was never called. Most likely he was given some sort of verbal reprimand, but nothing happened that got printed up in the university paper.

Am I defending him and would I do the same thing in my classroom? No. But I can't say as I found this guy particularly boring or stodgy.  ;)

Looking at that site makes me think of the dull, dry, boring profs who tried to teach Shakespeare when I was in college.

Can't say as I had the same complaint about my undergrad Shakespeare prof who had been teaching at the university since my mother was there.

If your paper sucked, he took it out in his back yard and had target practice with his shotgun, which meant that everyone in the class knew if you'd written a bad paper because when he returned them you could see the bullet holes.

On one of the last days of class, when we were doing MacBeth, he got this wicked gleam in his eyes as he asked 3 girls to come down to the front of the room to do one of the witches' scenes. He placed the trash can on the desk and told them that was their cauldron.

They started reading the scene from their trusty Folger paperback editions, and we watched as the prof suddenly flipped a match into the air and into the trash can, where he had apparently placed firecrackers or some other sort of pyrotechnic device.

Nobody was hurt, but the smoke got caught up in the building's ventilation system. (I later found out about this from my roommate who had a class in a room directly above ours. She said they could see smoke.) So he calmly continued class and we were having a lovely time when we heard sirens approaching the building. It was the university police. The foreign language dept secretary had phoned them.

The officers knocked on the classroom door, and the prof told them he was teaching a class that they would have to see him later in his office. He told them that he was crazy and that they could contact the English Department for confirmation. Then he shut the door and locked it.  :o

They waited around in the hallway for him after class. Nothing ever came of it.

Boring Shakespeare professor? Hardly.

Ok. Not John Karlen. Jim Fyfe from the 1991 series.

For the non-NASCAR people, a bit of explanation. A couple of years ago, Dale Jarrett's car got a new sponsor -- UPS. Since then, they have consistently run ad campaigns featuring DJ having to deal with various fans, celebrities, and UPS employees who would prefer that he raced a UPS delivery truck rather than his actual car. These ads are typically only shown during racing-related programs.

So, when last we saw DJ, he was calling UPS corporate headquarters to arrange a meeting because he had just seen a commercial featuring Kermit and Miss Piggy telling him to race the truck. The whole joke is that he just gets continually more infuriated by the suggestion.

The newest commercial is that meeting, and Jim Fyfe plays the UPS employee. Grand Prix racing legend Jackie Stewart is also featured.

You can view the ad on the UPS web site:

the judge adjourned his case for a year, which means if he stays out of trouble for that long his record will be expunged.

He's apt to have longer lasting consequences for filming some of those Dell spots during a Screen Actors Guild strike.

Dude! You're getting blacklisted.  ;D

Hmm . . . since I've spent the past couple of days on the couch under a fleece throw fighting off a nasty cold, I'm mighty partial to the afghan whose wondrous healing powers we will soon witness.  ;)

Just found out about this tonight . . .

For those of you who happen to have HBO Comedy, at midnight Eastern they will be showing the episode of The Mind of the Married Man that includes a scene with David Selby. The episode title is "20/20."

He's only on for the first couple of minutes, so, if you don't catch the beginning of the show, you'll miss him entirely.

This show originally aired this past fall.

A couple of tidbits to mention . . .

The Charleston Gazette indicates that David will be a scholar in residence next month at West Virginia State College. Rehearsals for his play, Final Assault, are also scheduled for next month. The play will be performed at the Capitol Center Theatre on the WVSC campus in April.

Surviving Christmas, the Ben Affleck/Christina Applegate film in which David has a role, was filming on location a couple of weeks ago in the Chicago area. Due to the bitter cold temperatures, some of the location shoots were scrapped and are being filmed this week in Orange County, CA, complete with "snow" and Christmas decorations.

That's why they call it acting.

1556
Additional dates have been added for performances of Final Assault. Performances will now be held April 10-12 and 17-19 at 8:00pm.

With the addition of another weekend of shows, please note that performances are no longer scheduled for April 9 or April 13.

Another point requiring clarification: The original media releases indicated that David would be co-producing and co-directing with Jamison Selby and David Wohl. That is incorrect. David is the writer, Jamison Selby is the director, and David Wohl is the production coordinator.

And I am mistress of an evil web empire. [lghy]

Hmm . . . ok, so I don't have it all figured out. I've been happily using the forum without a problem since I reconfigured Norton Personal Firewall until a few minutes ago when I got this message trying to access the home page:

Untrapped Error:
./Sources/BoardIndex.pl did not return a true value at /home/virtual/site25/fst/var/www/perl/yabb/YaBB.pl line 234.

The only way I managed to get in here was by clicking on New Postings and doing a search for this board. Home doesn't work for me again. :(

In keeping with tradition, there's some birthday frivolity on my Selby site, which you can access via the link banner below.

At first, I thought I was the only one easily amused by such nonsense until I actually had requests last year to leave it up. :)

Actually, according to some reports, El's girlfriend was indeed sitting on the toilet when she found the King, dethroned.

LOL

It comes as news to most of my students that he died in the throne room anyway, so none have quibbled over that point yet.
