On Friday, March 21, 2003, the Associated Press news wire featured an article about the upcoming world premiere of David Selby's play, Final Assault. I've added a link to this article to my David Selby web site.

For anyone wishing to submit a question to Dan Curtis regarding the release of the War and Remembrance DVD set, this Shadowgram update mentions that the chat will be held on www.darkshadowsdvd.com; however, it appears that questions are being accepted at http://www.mpihomevideo.com. Click on the W&R graphic for additional info.

And if I may steer off-topic for a moment....

Congratulations to you, Criseyde, on your nomination for a departmental teaching award, woo hoo! [bigok]

I realize I'm a bit late with this because I've been busy beating my computer into submission, but thanks for the attention.  :)

The nomination itself merits a line on my c.v. If I win the final award, I get $1,000. I also get to tell my undergrad prof who told me I'd never make it as a teacher to stick it where the sun doesn't shine because I received a teaching award at a Big 10 school.  :o

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 I / Selby Audio Interview
« on: March 17, 2003, 06:14:39 AM »
Hi everyone,

I'm unable to access my web site for an update right now because I'm doing everything to my computer short of beating it with a sledgehammer (which is going to be the next step).

At any rate, I wanted to pass along that David Selby did an audio interview for TomPaine.com during auditions last month in Charleston, WV for the play he wrote, Final Assault.

You can access the Real Audio version of the interview as well as a transcript here:

http://www.tompaine.com/feature.cfm/ID/7379/view/print

And let me beat everyone to the punch on this by saying that David's going to sound different than you're used to hearing him. If you listen to this, you'll get a good understanding of why so many of the published interview pieces with him comment on his being rather soft spoken.  ;)

Turns out BBC Radio 4 aired On the Waterfront last Saturday, and it's available in Real Audio format on their web site. I suspect this will be replaced by whatever play they air this weekend, so I'd check it out ASAP.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/arts/ram/saturday_play.ram

If that URL doesn't work, use the one below and scroll down to Saturday play:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml

David's character has his first lines about 25 minutes into the play. He has an Irish brogue.  :)

This past December, David Selby appeared in the L.A. Theatre Works live audio theatre production of On the Waterfront in the role of Fr. Vincent, a character specifically written for this adaptation.

On the Waterfront will be broadcast on March 29 at 8pm by KPCC FM 89.3 in Southern California. Although many public radio stations offer live streaming audio via the Internet, KPCC does not.

However, those not in the KPCC listening area can check their local NPR station's broadcast schedule to see if LATW productions are part of the lineup. Schedules vary from station to station.

I find the whole Viagra ad campaign very amusing, primarily because the NASCAR driver I root for drives the Viagra car,  though initially they sponsored another driver.

This is SO off-topic, but it's too funny not to tell. The driver that Viagra first sponsored was named, I kid you not, Mike Bliss. Adding to the fun, his car was owned by Eel River Racing. (Use your imagination . . .) So when Viagra first started sponsoring his car, some of the announcers just plain refused to refer to "the Viagra car." They called it "the Eel River Racing Pontiac," which just called even more attention to it.

When Viagra began sponsoring Mark Martin, they used to show only the car and a helmeted driver. He wouldn't do the ads, and he absolutely refuses to get on television and say he uses Viagra. I can see the man's point. He fathered 5 kids prior to the little blue pill going on the market, so things seem to be working fine.

The latest commercial has him saying that he knows a few things about making good moves because he makes them on the race track. Personally, I think he should say he knows a few things about making good moves because he has 5 kids.  :o

And whenever that commercial Ringo was referring to comes on, I always feel compelled to fill in the blank. "Did you get a new haircut?" No, you loser, I got lucky last night.

So, please tell me someone on the tram took a photo of you trying to get that shot...

Not that I am aware of. The story goes that the tour guide ran through a long list of stuff that was filmed over in this portion of the back lot, even mentioning that this was the same building featured in the opening of Night Court, which did nothing for me, but, the second she said Batman, I was there with the camera.

Somehow, the picture by itself doesn't quite convey the humor of the moment, but there you have it.

Actually, I know there are several sites on the web that feature photos from the HODS and NODS screenings. One of those is Bob's. He has photos from the NODS event, including some shots inside the theatre.

I'm just bummed that they didn't use any of the exteriors from original show that are located on the Warner Brothers back lot since I took the tour over the summer, and the rumors that I practically threw myself from the tram to take a photo of Commissioner Gordon's office are entirely true.  ;D

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 I / Vista Theatre in Batman Movie
« on: March 10, 2003, 04:17:46 AM »
The Vista Theatre, site of the HODS and NODS anniversary gatherings, was featured on tonight's Batman reunion film on CBS. Both the outside and inside of the theatre were featured.

They flashed up the title of the movie as they were walking inside, so you don't get so see the handprints and signatures that interest us most.  ::)

Well, if there HAD been yodelling, I'm quite sure David would have been the best yodeler.

If he'd played Beauregard in Auntie Mame, a play based on the book of the same name, instead of the musical adaptation Mame, we would've been able to find out. Beauregard yodels in his death scene.  :D

Still, the other answers were quite interesting, and has me wondering if there are even more connections to be made.

If we were talking about the Broadway version rather than the film version, then I could toss in a story David Selby once told Merv Griffin. Seems that the first time David Selby hopped a train to New York from West Virginia he saw Mary Martin in The Sound of Music. He told Merv that he cried (probably because of how much he paid for the tickets).

Meanwhile, I watch the film and just remark on how hot Christopher Plummer looks. Edelweiss, indeed!

WHAT IS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN DS AND THE SOUND OF MUSIC (film version)?

Hmm....Since they never yodeled on DS (and more's the pity), I believe the common thread would involve the puppets and the infamous bat on a string. Same puppeteer?

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 I / Flashing Gives Selby Adrenalin Rush
« on: February 28, 2003, 09:46:49 PM »
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation:
"David Selby told police that flashing gave him an adrenalin rush."

Ok. So actually this is about a 19 yr old flasher in Australia named David Selby, but I have to admit it looked kind of funny when that phrase popped up on a news search.

Here's the full story for anyone interested:
