Calendar Events / Announcements '03 II / Re:D. Selby in New Pic

The movie he is in is called Surviving Christmas with Ben Affleck, not Jennifer Lopez. The movie was filmed earlier this year, but it's not supposed to be released until Christmas 2004. David's part is not a major one from what I've been told.

The delay has to do with Affleck having multiple films through different studios. They stagger the releases so that they're not competing with one another.

(The delay probably also has to do with Gigli being such a turkey.)

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 II / Criseyde's Selby Site Updated
« on: August 01, 2003, 07:33:15 AM »
Two additions to the site in the Photo Gallery:

(1) screen grabs from the film Raise the Titanic

(2) screen grabs from Dr. David Selby's appearance a few months ago on West Virginia State College's State Today

While his play, Final Assault, was in production in Charleston, David served as an Artist in Residence at West Virginia State College. He continues to be involved in the college's new masters program in Media Studies.

The new additions are accessible via links from the main page:

And the person who was on DS and Charlie's Angels would be?

Well, despite the fact that I hear Thayer David looked especially perky on his episode, I meant Kate Jackson.  ;)

Umm. Then I have to guess it was one of Charlie's Angels;D

BTW . . . I am not "running on Windows XP." It just doesn't do that much for me. I'm running on caffeine and sugar.  :-*

Unfortunately, not all the DS actresses left them behind ...

Hence, the fan backlash;D

The poor excuse saw my daughter reading "The Once and Future King", and told her that he never read it because it was too big and intimitating.

Now that is truly frightening. I was required to read that one during the summer before my sophomore year of high school.

When I was a sophomore, we had a coach for our half-semester geography class. It was pretty obvious he wasn't hired for his intellect, especially since he never even bothered to read the textbook. When we were discussing the Soviet Union, he was trying to convince the class that the Supreme Soviet was the guy in charge of the country just under Gorbachev.  ::)

Apparently, the fine tradition continues. I know someone who works on computers at the school and on occasion is in the classrooms working while they're holding class. Some very interesting things transpired during the Vietnam War.  ;)

This week's BBC Radio 4 Friday Play is Blood of Strangers, starring Eric Stoltz. David Selby also lends his voice as Dr. Blake.

Unlike NPR broadcasts, which are only available via live simulcast, the BBC archives their broadcasts until the next installment of the program. Therefore, you can listen to Blood of Strangers at your leisure until the next episode of The Friday Play airs next week. (In other words, none of those lame server errors folks were getting trying to listen to Streetcar on KPCC.)

This was done as a radio play?!?

It would be hard to picture Selby as Mitch otherwise ...

How interesting -- I thought that was only done in the U.K.

Radio plays? They're most definitely alive and well in America. The group that Selby works with is LA Theatre Works, and their stuff winds up on both NPR and the BBC.

LATW has been around since 1974, but they didn't get involved in radio drama until the mid-1980s. Their first radio production, Once in a Lifetime got some national media attention from sources like CBS This Morning, and, at that time, their members included folks like Selby, Robert Foxworth, Ed Asner, John Lithgow, Amy Irving, Ted Danson, Richard Dreyfuss, and on and on.

One of the more interesting things they've done lately is to take actors who normally work together on a specific tv show and put them together in a production. Kelsey Grammer and John Mahoney from Frasier did The Third Man, and actors from the various incarnations of Star Trek, including Leonard Nimoy and Gates McFadden, did War of the Worlds.

I guess since Return to Collinwood is now coming to fruition that it's ok to mention that David Selby has wanted to do a similar type of project with the Dark Shadows actors.

I also need to mention here that LATW is not the only group producing radio drama. There are several others with equally recognizable actors, though LATW offers most of their stuff on cd and audio tape, so it's easy to get your hands on in libraries or via mail order if your local NPR station doesn't carry radio drama. Not all of them do. LATW sells titles directly, and Amazon also offers most LATW titles.

what might prove to be more interesting is a making of documentary that's included on the DVD. I'll be curious to learn more about that from you because chances are you'll get to see it before my friend ever does. ;)

I got hold of a copy today. The documentary is only really about the sequence filmed in Africa, which features Streisand and Paul Benedict. Selby isn't in the documentary except in clips that are from the film itself.

As for the commentary, I just sort of zipped through the film rather quickly, but it doesn't appear that she ever talks about Selby specifically. Her focus, understandably, is on her own character.

I was hoping for a tell-all account of the hole in his sweater when he first went to talk about doing the movie. Darn it!  ;D

I thought it was in the Museum of TV and Radio but they've been too busy addng more episodes of Seinfeld and Cheers to their viewing collections to bother with such trivia as the Oscarcasts (can you hear me grinding my teeth?)

Like I'm going to fly to LA or NY to watch episodes of shows that I can see at least 4 times a day thanks to the infinite variety of programming offered to me by my cable company.  ;)

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 II / Night of the Iguana on TCM

Didn't see this on the calendar already, but it's probably been mentioned on here somewhere.

TCM will be airing Night of the Iguana with Grayson Hall's Oscar-nominated performance on Thursday, July 31, at 6:00pm ET.

Did anyone else listen to it, or is that a really dumb question?  ^-^

Like Patti, I got error messages once the pre-recorded blurb about becoming a member ended. I suspect they had more folks trying to listen than they could handle since, as a staffer so "helpfully" informed me, it's working fine right now.

I doubt people are rushing to their computers to hear Talk of the City with Kitty Felde.  [puke]

Hmm...tried both links...got a request for money (public broadcast??) on the radio station; then, on the live ram, took me somewhere...then got an error message :P

The request for money is a standard blurb it always opens when you listen to this particular station, then the live feed is supposed to open. If you're getting an error that there are server problems, then you need to contact the station via their site. It's not something that can be fixed on the visitor's end.
