i also can't get past Blair Brown with John Belushi in Continental Divide. it was on the other day!

I've never seen the film, but the making of it is discussed extensively in Bob Woodward's Wired, which I read several months ago mainly because I found a copy at a used bookstore for a dime and because Saturday Night Live interests me, though I'm not a huge fan of Belushi.

It was kind of striking to read about an SNL actor who envisioned himself as playing a Cary Grant, romatic lead type role in this film when the project was presented to him early on and hoped to use it as a springboard to do more "serious" work. Obviously, the film ran into all sorts of bumps, and this is not what it turned out to be.

Flash forward twenty years, and we see fellow SNL alum Bill Murray get an Oscar nomination for Lost in Translation and hear the ongoing discussion of how this was "the role of a lifetime" for him and his "one shot at an Oscar," and he comments himself that the nomination is bittersweet because he recognizes that some of his SNL mates who are no longer around never got this opportunity though they definitely wanted it.

It makes it all the more disappointing that Continental Divide turned out badly.

I did get the error a day or so ago, but I didn't pay much attention to it. Figured it was a temporary thing and not worth bugging anyone over yet.  ;)

Midnite didn't mention this directly, though you can figure it out from the email link she posted for the theatre. The Tamarind Theatre web site is:

http://www.thetamarindtheatre.com/

The Flash presentation will take a few seconds to load if you're using a dial-up connection. They have a photo of Pennock with a list of some of his credits, including his recent appearance at the Actor's Studio and his "terrifying portrayals on Dark Shadows."

(Time for a gratuitous medieval student comment: They also misspelled Abelard of Abelard and Heloise as Abeland.  ::) )

Ah. That makes sense. I was wondering why the article talked about a massive publicity campaign for a run of several months and then SG reported a 3/30 close. Had me wondering if the production had bombed. Guess not.  :P

« on: April 01, 2004, 07:05:44 PM »
The recent SG e-mail update reported that Chris Pennock is appearing as Claudius in the Tamarind Theatre's production of Hamlet in L.A. I found this article about the play and its connection to an HBO series from the L.A. Times rather interesting.

ARTS NOTES;
'Hamlet' is making quite a scene
3-14-04

In L.A.'s sub-100-seat theater scene, most producers can't afford to spend much on advertising.

But the hoopla for the "Hamlet" opening March 22 at the 85-seat Tamarind Theatre in Hollywood is something else entirely.

Already, the production is being advertised on 12 billboards, as far away from the theater as West L.A., and on two city buses. Television commercials are in the talking stage.

Francesco Vitale, who runs the Tamarind and stars as Hamlet, says the marketing campaign set for the next few months has a $300,000 budget, raised from three investors whom he won't identify. None of the money is his, he insists: "I'm a struggling actor."

The production also might get a PR boost because it and the Tamarind are being used in the shooting of a new HBO comedy series that George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh are producing. But Vitale says revenue from the HBO deal is not paying for the "Hamlet" marketing campaign, which was already in place before the deal was made. In fact, he believes the marketing might have helped attract HBO.

HBO officials declined to discuss the deal except to confirm that the series has filmed both at the Tamarind and during rehearsals for "Hamlet."

Calendar Events / Announcements '04 I / Misty Dawn - DS Parody
« on: April 01, 2004, 12:26:31 AM »
Stumbled across this and thought it might be of interest. Apparently, a production company in the Dallas area is shooting a parody of DS entitled Misty Shadows. It will supposedly air on Dallas community television. Filming, if the web site is accurate, took place this past weekend.

More information, including casting sides, here:

Just out of curiosity, did the Reuters story carry anything about storylines for Julia and Liz?  (One of my peeves about the 1991 effort was that Liz had NO storylines AT ALL.)

Not a peep about Julia or Liz. Sorry.   :(

Not sure if this has come up elsewhere in this thread. (It's 15 pages long, people!) Reuters carried a story yesterday about pilot casting mentioning actors we've already heard about, but they went on to describe some of the character relationships and plot developments:
Gould and Donovan will play the family's sons. Chastain will play a member of the Stoddard family who gets bitten by a vampire.
I use the spoiler feature here with tongue firmly in cheek.

The full text of the article is here.

I think "appearance" here refers to the individual actor's appearance on a particular program, not to the forum member's number of visits to the board, and I suspect the limitations have to do with bandwidth issues. Video files can be pretty large and viewing them can eat up a web site's bandwidth limit in no time, which is why a lot of sites offer no video or only lower quality video.

KPFA 94.1 FM in Berkeley, CA will broadcast the L.A. Theatre Works performance of Horton Foote's The Young Man from Atlanta starring Shirley Knight and David Selby on Sunday, April 11 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm local time.

This station also offers online broadcasts. Click here.

The Young Man from Atlanta is also available on cassette and compact disc from the L.A. Theatre Works web site.

Amazon offers it on audio cassette and compact disc as well as in a downloadable format. This link will take you to the compact disc, but the page has links to the other formats as well.

And, dom, I don't have a slideshow, but, if you click on the Amazon link and then follow the link to the downloadable version, they have clips in Windows Media Player and Real Player format. It's about 6 minutes from the opening scene. You get to hear David do his Texas accent.  :)

David Selby's episode of Ally McBeal, entitled "I Want Love," will air on FX on Saturday, April 17, at 8:00am ET. David reunites with Rich and Famous co-star Jacqueline Bisset, and the episode also features Elton John. It originally aired in 2001 and was one of the highest rated episodes of that season.

Thanks to the kindness of an anonymous donor, I now have a copy of the New York Times review of The Perfectionist at the McCarter Theatre in 1993. David Selby played the role of Tobias Harte and went on to reprise the role for an L.A. Theatre Works audio performance. The review includes a photo of David with co-star Betty Buckley.

I've uploaded a copy of the photo along with the review to my David Selby site. New material is accessible by following the links from the main page:

Enjoy!

Just a quick correction to some information that appears in the latest SG update:

Quote
Congratulations to DAVID SELBY (Quentin). He receives an honorary
doctorate and delivers the commencement speech for West Virginia University's
graduation ceremony May 16 at the Coliseum on the Evansville campus. Located near
Morgantown at the junction of I-79 and I-68, it is approx. 70 miles south of
Pittsburgh and 200 miles north of Washington, DC, just below the WV/Maryland
border.

There's a typo here. The WVU Coliseum is on the Evansdale campus, not Evansville.

There's more detailed information, including maps and lodging information, on the WVU Commencement web site.
