Calendar Events / Announcements '04 I / David Selby in Larva
« on: June 05, 2004, 08:34:35 PM »
All the other threads mentioning this were in CE/A '03, so I guess it won't hurt to have a thread on it here since it supposedly airs this year.  :)

The initial buzz on Larva, which was filmed in the Springfield, MO area in November and December of this past year, was that it would air on Sci-Fi Channel during the summer. Some reports indicated a possible July airdate.

The word now is that it will be broadcast in the fall.

I am told that David Selby plays the "chief villain" in the film.  ;D

The film was shot in and will be shown in a widescreen format.

If you're interested in reading about some of the camera, lighting, CGI, etc. effects that were employed for the movie, check out this article from DigitalProducer.com. You'll need to scroll down to the part labeled "The Larval Stages":

http://www.digitalproducer.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=25587-1

This is actually the second page of the article. If you scroll to the end of it, you'll see a link to the previous page if you want to read the whole thing.

Really? Gee, I must travel in the wrong academic circles...

Yes. You're not in the humanities.  :-*

Geez, I had never even heard of the SCA.   :-

Umm. I have mainly because it's fashionable within the academy to slam the SCA. To give you a sense of the basis of most of the comments, the SCA is generally looked upon by academics as more of a fan group rather than a scholarly group.

But then you know I'm endlessly fascinated with what a b.s. distinction that really is.  ;)

Patti,

It's on the News page of David's official site, at the top of the page, where they list all of his upcoming appearances.

On the LATW site, you can get it by clicking on the link for the 2003/2004 season on the home page.

Same blurb on either site.

J99,

If you have the full-blown version of Acrobat, creating a pdf registration form is very easy to do, and now you can even create pdf forms that can be completed and submitted online. I attended a conference about a month ago that used that format. Whether that would work or not for the Fest would depend on what sort of functions their web server supports.

But, with the PayPal option you mentioned, they wouldn't even really need the pdf form. All they'd have to do is put the form online as it is with a button to click next to each item/service for people to add it to their shopping cart. It would not be complicated at all, and the entire process could be handled electronically.

However, not all Dark Shadows fans are that active online, so they would also need to keep the paper/snail mail options available.

Still, it would cut down on a LOT of work for PansyFaye and wouldn't be difficult to implement at all. But it would depend on whether or not the Fest considered it worth the % that PayPal would take for the use of their service.

Calendar Events / Announcements '04 I / David Selby in Pack of Lies
« on: May 28, 2004, 08:43:47 PM »
This has been mentioned elsewhere, but the full casting information just became available this week. David Selby will appear in the LA Theatre Works production of Hugh Whitemore's Pack of Lies on June 16-20. (There are no Saturday performances.)

Performances are at the Skirball Cultural Center.

Other cast members include Rosalind Ayres, Martin Jarvis, and Julian Sands. (Worthless trivia: Ayres and Jarvis are married. Selby is the only non-British actor listed as starring in this performance.)

A synopsis of the play and box office information is available on the LA Theatre Works web site or DavidSelby.com.

Thanks for the Amazon plug, Midnite.

I've been working on a web site for a local high school and just signed them up for the same program. The direct links to books on their summer reading list are turning out to be quite the little fundraiser.  :)

Vlad,

You should check out the 1980ish BBC version with Derek Jacobi as Hamlet and Patrick Stewart as Claudius. A great deal of the staging of scenes in Branagh's film is taken from this version. A lot of what he gets praised or blamed for with the film was actually "borrowed." It's not 100% vanity. Maybe more like 95%.  >:D

The Official David Selby Web Site has even more stuff today. There's a new article link and a link to photo pages on the WVU Commencement web site. They've posted so many photos from this event that flipping through them in slideshow format is practically like watching the whole ceremony. I think they've pretty much covered every Selby hand and facial gesture from his speech, and they've got some shots of him from the procession as well.

Forget that crap about a man in uniform. Give me a man in academic regalia.

Some advice on viewing these photos: WVU Photographic Services likes to slap a lot of images on a single page, which can be a real problem if you're using a dialup connection. The easiest way around this is to click on a thumbnail image to pull up the ordering page for it and then to use the back and next arrows on the individual photo pages to view them one at a time.

The problem really seems to have more to do with Internet Destroyer, err Explorer. If you use another browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, the entire page of photos will eventually load. IE will load about 1/8 of them and just stop, so you have to use the method described above.  ::)

The fun never ends at DavidSelby.com. The latest addition to the Articles page of the site is an audio link to a radio program from this past Friday. Apparently, the interview with David was recorded during Friday's informal press conference at WVU.

Get this one while it's hot, folks. WV Public Broadcasting doesn't leave these radio shows online very long at all. (They interviewed David last fall when he was doing Love Letters in Martinsburg.)

A word of warning for anyone attempting to listen to this Windows Media Player file via a dialup connection: expect lots of stalling and buffering from your player.  ::)

Well, looks like there's not much I need to add to my site to supplement the content on the official web site. If you've not checked out DavidSelby.com over the past 24-48 hours, the site includes:
  • links to articles, some including photos of David taken during commencement
  • a link to the full text of David's commencement address
  • a link to ordering information for the commencement videotape

The Official David Selby Web Site has a link to photos taken during today's press conference on the WVU campus.

I've finally uploaded 2003 Dark Shadows Festival photos to DRKS ONE's web site. I've had these for months and forgot about them until I came across them while cleaning my office.

Please use the link on the site to contact DRKS ONE if you have any feedback about his photos. He doesn't visit many of the online forums and lists.

Calendar Events / Announcements '04 I / Surviving Christmas
« on: May 13, 2004, 07:23:16 AM »
The Associated Press and Variety recently reported that the Motion Picture Association of America had to arbitrate a dispute between Dreamworks SKG and Revolution Studios over the titles of their upcoming Christmas films.

Surviving Christimas starring Ben Affleck and Christina Applegate, which includes an appearance by David Selby, was originally filmed in early 2003. The release date was delayed due to an agreement between film studios that would prevent two of Affleck's films from competing with each other in theaters. Therefore, we got Paycheck this past holiday instead of Surviving Christmas, which will be released this coming November.

Revolution Studios plans to release a film based on the John Grisham novel Skipping Christmas this year.

Because of the similar titles and because Surviving Christmas is already in the can, the MPAA determined that Skipping Christmas has to be retitled Christmas with the Kranks, after the name of the family that is the film's focus.

There . . . more info than anyone could ever possibly want or need. ;D

According to the WVU web site and the News page of the official Selby site, David will be available to the media during an informal press conference on Friday, so there could wind up being some media coverage regarding David that goes beyond simply reiterating that he delivered the commencement address.  :)
