Calendar Events / Announcements '02 II / Dark Shadows on Court TV?
« on: October 29, 2002, 09:46:54 AM »
I found this interesting. TV Now is listing several Dark Shadows cast members as appearing in an episode of Court TV's The System entitled "Dark Shadows" airing on Halloween. I had assumed that this was simply an error or a coincidence.

Now that Court TV has updated their web site, you can see the full episode description, and this particular episode centers on the murder trial of Rod Ferrell in Florida in 1998. Ferrell allegedly led a vampire cult, and much was made of his interest in Dungeons & Dragons (which is a close second to heavy metal music as the root of all evil ;-) ) and a vampire role playing game. To the best of my knowledge, Ferrell was never pegged as a Dark Shadows fan, but the episode title has me curious.

I've also developed an interest in this sort of thing because the university has just approved a course proposal I submitted for a specialized version of freshman composition dealing with fans and fandom.

Since I don't get Court TV, if anyone happens to watch this, I would love to know if there's anything Dark Shadows about this other than the episode title.

Here's the link to the show on the Court TV site:

There's also a link for additional information on the right side of that page.

Calendar Events / Announcements '02 II / More on Selby's animated film
« on: October 24, 2002, 04:11:16 AM »
Here's a hot news blurb from the animator and co-producer of The Griffin and the Minor Canon, which features David Selby providing the voice of the Griffin and Chris Sarandon providing the voice of the Minor Canon.

The film was recently presented at the L.A. Film School Theater as part of the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival.

It did not take any prizes, but this is good exposure for the film since this is reputed to be the largest short film festival in the world.

Broadway and television veteran Keene Curtis passed away on Oct. 13 following a battle with Alzheimer's disease.

He provided the voice of Judah Zachary on Dark Shadows, but was perhaps best known to television audiences as John Hill, owner of the upstairs restaurant on Cheers. He had many television guest appearances in addition to these roles and appeared on Broadway in numerous productions, including La Cage Aux Folles.

Additional information about Curtis' career can be found in this Playbill Online piece:

David Selby's episode of The Mind of the Married Man will premiere on HBO on Sunday, 10/13 at 10:30pm ET and be rebroadcast several times during the week.

All broadcast times are listed on my site.

FYI - This role is similar to the Ally McBeal appearance. Don't expect to see David in every scene.

Oops. Completely missed this for all the ranting and raving about Mame.

David Selby appeared on an episode of DIY Halloween on the Do It Yourself Network in a segment about scary storytelling.

The episode will be rebroadcast on Oct. 18 and Oct. 25. There's more info on my Selby site.

I've not seen the episode, but I hope the story wasn't about some actor attempting to leave via the stage door of a theater and being confronted by a pack of psycho fans. ;)

Hi everyone,

The LA-area Dark Shadows fan club, Shadows in the Sun, is in the process of getting together a group to attend an upcoming performance of Mame with David Selby.

I thought I would pass along group-related information for any other groups of fans who might be interested in attending. I'm working with the producers in order to provide groups of David Selby fans an opportunity to tour the backstage area and, possibly, to meet with David.

Here's the story . . . For groups of 10 or more fans attending the show, Cabrillo Music Theatre has offered to arrange a souvenir "backstage pass" and  a "meet and greet" with David (depending on his schedule, etc.).

Anyone who's going to see the show with a group of 10 or more fans can contact me via the Feedback page of my web site so that I can pass along contact information for the theater's group sales folks and the people who are arranging these "meet and greets."

Much as I would like to say that I have enough free time this semester to organize fans into these groups, I really don't; however, if anyone plans to attend with fewer than the required 10 to make a group, please contact me via my site's Feedback page with info about the show you wish to attend, and I'll see if there's any way I can start matching folks together to make the necessary 10.

I'm not making any promises, though, because there are papers to be graded and PhD qualifying exams to be taken. :)

If you need more info about Mame, you'll find it on my web site via the link banner below.

David Selby is mentioned in an Oct. 6 Playbill Online article for his upcoming appearance in Mame in Thousand Oaks, California.

A link to the article appears on my Selby site.

Calendar Events / Announcements '02 II / Rebroadcast of DS Cast on SoapTalk
« on: September 01, 2002, 05:59:30 PM »
Someone was kind enough to post this information on alt.tv.dark_shadows.

SOAPNet will rebroadcast the episode of SoapTalk featuring the Dark Shadows cast reunion on Labor Day.

I have some screen grabs from this show on my web site:

http://www.ldrservicesonline.com/darkshadows/soaptalk.htm

The message on the newsgroup also stated that there would be a Dark Shadows segment on SoapCenter on Labor Day as well, but I've not been able to find this mentioned anywhere on the SoapNet site.

At any rate, for the SOAPNet schedule for your area, check out their website:

Calendar Events / Announcements '02 II / Selby Site Update 8/22/02
« on: August 22, 2002, 05:44:46 PM »
Just a few small additions to mention:
  • a 1998 article from the Sunday Gazette-Mail (in Charleston, West Virginia) that includes some quotes from David about his play Lincoln and James, which he had previously performed at the 1997 Dark Shadows Festival in New York. Since that time, David has continued to work on rewrites of the play for possible future performances.

  • a 1990 article/interview from the Toronto Star about David's decision to leave Falcon Crest. (The show wound up being axed at the end of this season anyway, but David had decided to leave prior to the network's decision.)

  • a clarification regarding some misinformation that surfaced on a couple of Dark Shadows Yahoo groups last week regarding David's appearance schedule
Please click on the link banner below to see the new material.

I've just added some screen grabs and an audio clip from the film The Shot to my David Selby site. This is an NYU film school short that David did in the early 1990s. I believe this was shown at the 1999 Dark Shadows Festival as well.

These new additions come courtesy of videotape footage supplied by PatrickM.

To see them, click the link banner below and follow the link from the What's New section of the site.
