Calendar Events / Announcements '03 I / David Selby on Ally McBeal
« on: June 23, 2003, 07:34:24 PM »
David Selby's episode of Ally McBeal, entitled "I Want Love," will air on the FX cable network on Tuesday, June 24, at 2:00pm ET. The episode also features Elton John and Jacqueline Bisset.

Selby plays Bisset's boss, whom she is suing for firing her over her engagement to a much younger man.

He's in the background for a lot of the episode, but he does have a rather funny moment with Calista Flockhart when his character takes the stand.

David Selby has a small role in the upcoming film Topanga, which had been noted on my site, in Shadowgram, and elsewhere, under its working title of Topanga Canyon.

Here's a brief synopsis courtesy of the film's producer:

Jean (Kelsey Oldershaw) abandons her bourgeois husband Paul (Horatio Ledon) and surroundings for the unemployed layabout Viggo (Andy Mackenzie). His charms include focusing his energy into sex and street wise philosophy. Jean becomes pregnant. Being unclear who the father is, both men eagerly are offering advice and help which she rejects until she finds clarity for herself.

At this point, that's all the information I have. David's role is very brief. He only shot for a day.

If/when I get any more information, I'll pass it along.

Today, my local paper included a syndicated Q&A column called "Ask Holly Wood" featuring a question about DS. I found an online version on another newspaper web site:

Not sure how long this link will work. Here's the relevant portion:

Reader haunted by 'Dark Shadows'
By Holly Wood
Thursday, June 19, 2003

Q: I have been watching the TV series "Dark Shadows," from the 1960s. When did it first air, and what happened to the actors? -- C.T., Gallipolis, Ohio

A: The gothic soap opera "Dark Shadows" first aired in 1966, and ran until 1971. It spawned a 1970 movie called "House of Dark Shadows."

Numerous actors starred in the series (some more playing than one character), so I'll give you an update on the main ones. Joan Bennett, who, among other characters, played Elizabeth Collins, appeared in a few TV movies before her death in 1990. Alexandra Isles, who played Victoria Winters, acts occasionally and does some behind-the-scenes work. Jonathan Frid, who portrayed the vampire Barnabas Collins, is retired from acting and is producing his own Web site; you can check it out at jonathanfrid.com. Grayson Hall (Julia Hoffman) died in 1985.

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 I / Recent Lisa Richards Photo
« on: June 16, 2003, 05:55:28 AM »
For those who don't know, Lisa Richards (aka Sabrina) has been quite active on the stage since her DS days. Her most recent role was at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre in Cape Cod in The Unexpected Man alongside Paul Benedict, whom you may remember as the neighbor on The Jeffersons.

Here's a link to a review that includes a photo:

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 I / Relaunch of DRKS ONE's Site
« on: June 04, 2003, 09:48:58 PM »
Hi everyone,

Just wanted to announce that we've reposted DRKS ONE's Dark Shadows Site to another URL:

http://www.drksone.0catch.com

DRKS ONE, as many of you know, is Rich Blanco, who does extensive photography and videography at the Dark Shadows Festivals and other DS events.

The site features some of his photos from the 2001 Festival at the WTC Marriott along with clips from his 1999 Festival videotape. I'll be adding more clips, hopefully with better picture and sound quality, in the coming months.

If you like what you see, please use the feedback form on the site to contact Rich.

Thanks,
Criseyde

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 I / Dark Shadows Reloaded

Anyone around here seen the new Matrix movie? I haven't yet, but I was looking at reviews on the web and came across one that mentions Dark Shadows. Apparently, there's supposed to be a scene in the film that features characters watching Dark Shadows.

Click here and scroll to the bottom.

Anyone actually catch this scene at the theater?

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 I / OT: Sound familiar?
« on: May 24, 2003, 01:43:56 AM »
As the Selby die-hards here know, David Selby has appeared in 3 productions directed by Michael Wilson, productions of Long Day's Journey into Night staged at Houston's Alley Theatre and at Hartford Stage and a production of St. Nicholas at Hartford Stage.

Wilson is currently directing Enchanted April on Broadway, but he remains in the Artistic Director position at Hartford Stage. Wilson was also named as a possibility to direct when the idea of a Dark Shadows musical was being kicked around. He's a big fan of the show.

Anyway, my point, and I do have one, is that information about the upcoming Hartford Stage season was released today. Check out this production. Pretty easy to see how/why Wilson would go for this. Sounds just a little familiar.  ;)

The Mystery of Irma Vep - A Penny Dreadful

By Charles Ludlam
Directed by Michael Wilson

What do you get when you add equal parts Agatha Christie, Monster Mash and Marx Brothers? You get a hysterical evening of theatre that is destined to leave you breathless with laughter. The residents of Mandacrest Mansion are having a hard time sleeping, what with all the vampires, werewolves and mummies running around. Two actors perform all the roles at a break-neck pace in this dizzying quick-change comedy.

Current Talk '03 I / Singing Soap Stars
« on: May 19, 2003, 05:47:40 AM »
This is sort of off-topic, but not exactly. On Friday night, I happened to have the Daytime Emmy Awards playing on the television while I was in and out of the room doing other stuff. At one point, they had Donny "Puppy Love" Osmond come out and introduce a segment featuring soap actors who also sing.

Now I understand why Elvis shot out the television. Geez.

No longer will I giggle uncontrollably at the sound of the "I Wanna Dance with You" duet. It was a masterpiece compared to this Emmy segment.

However, I have to say the show redeemed itself when they brought out the Sesame Street muppets to sing songs from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood as a tribute to the man. It was really sweet.
