Current Talk '02 I / Devils SHRINK in Fear!
« on: June 13, 2002, 09:49:36 PM »
More delectable scenery-chewing today from fab Jerry Lacey.  Does anybody else LIVE for the moment when the fly lands on his nose and he spews it forth with cross-eyed fervor, arointing those mean old divvils with ferocious zeal?

This was the second episode of DS I ever saw, back in the halcyon days of June 1968 (interesting how close to the original broadcast date they are with it).  About 2  minutes into the show, watching Cassandra rave over her potions in that spectacular buttefly peignoir, I knew I would be a fan for life.

Imagine being exorcised while wearing a buttefly peignoir!  I can imagine the snickers when Cass turned up back in the old Flaming Pit Lounge wearing that thing.

Current Talk '02 I / Cassandra's Aging
« on: May 29, 2002, 09:00:54 PM »
I've always been curious how today's first episode was shot.  Did they do it all on one day, or did they need to take a break--either of some hours or a day--while the second phase of makeup was added to Lara Parker?

I've read how the "withered claws" effect from yesterday's episode was accomplished, but have never seen any discussion of how the 2 phases of Cassandra's makeup were applied.  It's possible that the long scene between Tony and Carolyn was scripted to give the makeup man time to apply layer #2 to Ms. Parker.  I simply wonder whether it was something that could have been accomplished that quickly.

Current Talk '02 I / Julia Smackdown Fest!
« on: May 28, 2002, 10:37:43 PM »
... not sure I am using the term "smackdown" correctly in that title ... but I know that some folks would get their knickers in a twist if I titled this post "Julia's B*tchslap Fest."

From studying today's Montage, I take it that the episode where Julia has to SLAP Mrs. Johnson out of her hysteria aired.  I should study her technique; I witnessed an individual yesterday who was literally screaming and throwing things, and I was thinking what a salutary effect a crisp, clean "Juliaslap" would have had on him.

Let's collect ALL of Julia's slaps.  As of today, she has slapped ONCE.  I'll attempt to keep a running total.

Current Talk '02 I / Goddess Grayson Hall
« on: May 21, 2002, 07:44:43 PM »
I just have to share the perhaps unwelcome observation that Dr. Julia Hoffman's Dream Curse sequence may be one of the most brilliant bits of videotape in the history of American television.

I have also seen the fan version but the original is SO much better.  My two favorite moments are when Mrs. Johnson is silently beckoning Julia to the door and Julia is hysterically asking her, "Why are you doing this to me???" and it looks as if Mrs. J is about to grab Julia's breast!  I can imagine "Sister Wendy"'s comment on that!  "The religouth thignificanth of Dr Julia Hoffman's BREATHT"  THEN the climactic scream as the Death Bride is revealed is so transfigurative, transcendental and, well, just a HOOT to witness.

I really wish there was video of Grayson and Clarice discussing that scene after taping. I'm sure both ladies had some hilarious comments to make about shooting it!

As far as I am concerned, moments like this are DS at its most inspired.  I know others do not agree, but I had to just TELL THE DREAM.  Now I can rest ...

But no, cigarettes do NOT calm my nerves,

Current Talk '02 I / Fervently clutching the phone
« on: May 01, 2002, 10:37:56 PM »
To the Mysterious Benefactor in all his mysterious May Day delight,

Many thanks for including that FAB shot of the Queen of Fabness Herself, Dr. Julia Hoffman, fervently clutching the phone at Collinwood, as gnostic and hieratic as an image in a Wallace Stevens alchemical chapbook.

Wish I had a nice, crisp, large jpg of this image for my very own.

I just love that scene where Julia goes to the Old House and lays down the law to vampy Barn.  And even more I love the scene between Julia and Dr. Lang in the hospital.  I can just see Julia thinking:  "time to get one of Angelique's voodoo dolls out and one of Eric Lang's scarves for a special treat!"

I swear, that scene where poor befuddled Addison Powell blurts out (obviously struggling not to burst out laughing), "He's a vampire, isn't he?" always cracks me up!  ONLY Grayson's dignity and focused saved that scene from degenerating into a Monty Python skit!

Current Talk '02 I / Paging Luciaphil!
« on: April 25, 2002, 10:04:32 PM »
Are we going to get one of your witty, thoughtful commentaries to today's episodes?  I really want to get out the tape and have a look at these.  Thought Joan looked at her loveliest.

It is interesting to see the comments in the "Naomi notions" post about Naomi's suicide.  Although for obvious reasons I can't really put myself in her shoes (my feet are too darned big for starters, lol), I do find dramatically plausible her traumatic reaction to discovering what had happened to Barnabas, resulting in her act of suicide.  I haven't seen these shows in many years so perhaps the way the story was written, or the way Joan played the scene, makes the depth of Naomi's shock implausible ... but I don't think the concept is at all unlikely, I'm sad to say.

In certain cultures, Imperial Rome and classical China for example, suicide was almost programmed as the "correct" response to family misfortune, particularly for a female.  A lot of the casualties in Chinese wars throughout the ages were women who committed suicide because the alternative was vulnerability to rape.

Current Talk '02 I / Suki Madness!!!
« on: March 29, 2002, 10:35:45 PM »
My boss was telling me today about March madness, an obscure festival involving some cult that revolves around two sacred symbols, a rubber ball and a hoop hung high, no doubt to symbolize the fact that the sun is rising earlier and earlier each day and the Wheel of the Year (represented by the ball) is turning brighter and brighter.  Yeah, that must be it.

Anyhow, thanks to the Mysterious B for today's montage and the alert that SUKI madness has come to Collinwood!  Suki's ensemble, especially with that chapeau, is very Mae West and Belle of the Nineties, isn't it?  Boy, how I am looking forward to the Fashion Notes from today.  Miz Luciaphil, if you please!

Let's imagine one liners that could happen in Suki's chat with Millicent:

"Goodness, what lovely false eyelashes."

"Goodness had NUTHIN' ta do with it, HONEY.  Ever hear of WOOLWORTH'S?"

"You must excuse Nathan, he's been working very hard these days."

"Funny, when I knew Nathan, if there was something HARD about him, it didn't involve WORK."

"You know, Miss Forbes, I do hope my homemaking skills are sufficient for your brother, I know what HIGH standards he has!"

"Honey, it's not HOMEMAKING he wants, it's MAKING HO!!!"

(Millicent conveniently faints at this point)

Oh dear ... I'm afraid I've shockingly lowered the tone of this board ... I'm afraid I see Midnite with a large HOOK glowering at me in the wings!!!

Current Talk '02 I / Joshua and Naomi
« on: March 28, 2002, 10:57:39 PM »
Haven't been keeping up with the shows as b'cast on Sci Fi (I have had almost NO time to enjoy videos lately), and I've hardly read every post here, but I am still surprised not to have seen a topic for the amazing scene between Louis and Joan where they discuss the death of their daughter, Sarah.  I believe the scene played at the beginning of the first episode yesterday (Wed.)  It's the one where Joan has the line about the little bird she heard singing at dawn.  The scene is absolutely heartbreaking--the expression of devastation on Joshua's face is still with me years after my viewing of it.  A wonderful moment between the two of them, and I defy anyone to watch this and claim Joan Bennett wasn't a great actress.

I remember somebody posting this as one of the most effective, memorable moments in the entire series.  I would definitely agree with that estimation.

In the post on the sources for the 1795 storyline, 2 other films that come to mind are "The Undead," a very cheaply made Roger Corman film of the Fifties, and "Berkeley Square" with Leslie Howard.

Best wishes,

Steve

Current Talk '02 I / You'll do, little doll ... you'll do

Today's episodes are some of my favorites of this particular storyline. Angelique's emotions as she casts her first spell are wonderfully present in Lara Parker's acting. I thought she was fabulous. And KLS made a great entrance as Josette, I thought.

I obviously did not see today's broadcast (since I am at work) and it's been at least a couple years since I last ran these, so I'll refrain from further comment.

When Angelique holds up that toy soldier and purrs, "You'll do, little doll," I feel ice running down my back! It is interesting, too, to see that she is not really in complete control of her own powers (something that often happens in real-life spellcraft).

Calendar Events / Announcements '02 I / OT: Kevin Smith

For those who ever admired/lusted after Kevin Smith who portrayed Ares the War God (and Ares' twin brother the Lord of Love, in white tights that left John Travolta looking like chopped liver) on the Xena/Hercules megalith, I read today that Mr. Smith died after an accident while visiting a set in Beijing. Apparently he was climbing up a tower and fell. He was 38.

This kind of thing just kills me. Mr. Smith came across on the screen as sexy, funny, and very sweet. Tributes from coworkers who describe him across the board as the perfect gent have been pouring in. It's just not fair, y'know? I'd looked forward to seeing him do something worthy of his talents (while his costumes on XenaHerc were boss, the scripts were generally soggy at best), and now that hope is dashed. I feel for his family, as well.

Just wanted to share this sad news for those who care.

Wowee-zowee, I can't let today's montage pass without a very special tip of my hat to the Mysterious Benefactor. You've really outdone yourself! Those shots of Julia FREAKIN' OUT have got to rate as some of the best captures I've ever seen of Grayson Hall's unique body language. FABULOUS!

It also reminds me why I'm certain that Sam and Grayson concocted a lot of this out of Jean Cocteau's one woman play, The Human Voice, in which Grayson won rave reviews when she performed it at the Hedgerow Theatre (near Philadelphia) in 1961.

Can't wait to go home and pull my tape of these shows off the shelf. Truly quality television!

Thank you again Mr. Mysterious. We love you!
