Current Talk '03 I / The Elephant in Dr. Longworth's Lab
« on: June 26, 2003, 08:01:38 PM »
Hi all, had the show on briefly today.  Enjoyed the duelling beehive aspect (Bruno vs. Alexis--who had the biggest hair at Collinwood???)

I realize that as a gay man, I am prone to watch DS in a certain way, but I really found myself wondering--whatever the writer and director intended--whether David Selby, Lisa Richards and Chris Pennock had intended to play the scene in Cyrus' lab today where Cyrus "returns" and "explains" about his "working relationship" with Yeagar, as if Sabrina and Quentin suspected Cyrus of having had a sexual fling with Yeagar that the latter then chose to turn to his own nasty advantage.

Blackmail was a very real force in the typical male homosexual's life in the !960s.  Threats of blackmail, and dealing with the repercussions thereof, feature even in soft core porn novels written for the consumption of the nascent gay communities in the big cities (NYC, San Francisco, Boston, etc.) as well as the more literary productions of the period such as John Rechy's City of Night.

Quentin's expression throughout the scene looked as if he'd lifted a stone and found something foul--a common mainstream straight-male reaction to insinuations of homosexuality then as now.  And Sabrina looked as if she was ready to burst into tears at any moment (which is kind of Sabrina's default setting).  Although I thought Richards brought out an element of anger at one point that felt very real--it seemed as if the penny had dropped and Sabrina was thinking, "so, you neglect me for THIS?"

I know that the text was that Longworth had run into trouble getting illegal substances for his experiments or some similar underworld thing with Yeagar, but the SUBTEXT seemed to turn around "so this is Cyrus' dirty little secret."  I thought Pennock did a GREAT job with both roles today, as well.

I've always enjoyed the symbolism implicit in the names Yeagar and Longworth.  The latter clearly emphasizes the good doctor's unworldly, simplistic moralism.  Yeagar is another spelling of the German word Jaeger, which means "hunter."  Pennock's body language in the role suggests a half-wild beast of prey very much on the prowl.

On another note, poor Damian Edwards, trapped in the leisure suit from Hell for all eternity.  And Nicky thought Cassandra had it bad getting exorcised wearing a purple butterfly caftan.

Current Talk '03 I / Sci Fi's trashy DS broadcasts
« on: June 13, 2003, 03:49:22 PM »
OK, am I going out of my mind, or has the quality of Sci Fi's DS feed gone waaaayyyy below par???

I had the show on both yesterday and today.  Yesterday's viewing was very brief, but it looked, in the scene between Carolyn Loomis and Daniel in Angelique's room, as if someone had smeared brylcreem all over the camera lens (hmmm... maybe Buzz was visiting the studio that day?)  I don't remember this problem on my tape of that episode.

And on today's show, I noticed instantly that the feed looked grainy and washed out, compared to my MPI tape.  This was during today's second show, which is one of my favorite episodes in all DS, and I've viewed my own tape of it many times.   I found myself wondering whether the source material for the broadcasts is low grade copies of the masters rather than a higher quality thingamujig?

I know NAHSSINGK (bellowed with Magda Rakosi elan) about technical details of today's television broadcasts, but I notice that TV Land always maintains a high quality image when they run old shows, and I don't understand why Sci Fi can't do the same for DS.  I guess it may be the only Sixties show they are running now, so perhaps they just don't care anymore.  (Come to think of it, on TV Land's Bewitched marathon, one of the Dick Sargent era--ca. 1970 shows ran as a blurry, grainy film copy, where clearly no one had bothered to strike a new print of the episode for whatever reason.)

btw, when they were running that TACKY Stargate promo DURING the start of Act One, and acidic schmutz was belching all over Carolyn and Barnabas, I really felt the programmers were adding insult to injury!

Makes me profoundly grateful I don't rely upon Sci Fi for my DS viewing...

Current Talk '03 I / HOFFMANIA!!!
« on: June 06, 2003, 08:02:47 PM »
Well, I would have thought that by now, one of my fellow Hall-o-holics would have duly noted the arrival of one of my absolute favorite characters on DS:

Schlachthaus Kommandant HOFFMAN!

aber ja!

Every time I watch these shows again, I'm so grateful to the DS gods (whichever ones dreamed up this idea) for giving us the chance to see Grayson playing something with such understated restraint.

As Hoffman, she is nothing less than "excruciatingly good" as Barbara Steele once stated of Grayson's work on the series.

I believe that a taste of Louis Edmonds' catlike characterization of PT Roger is coming up next week.  Can't wait!  I just adore the scene where he comments to Alexis that speaking of Angelique and Maggie in the same breath is like "comparing a sable to a mouse."  A wonderful line, wonderfully delivered by Big Lou.

Current Talk '03 I / 1970 program announcement
« on: June 04, 2003, 02:44:41 PM »
Had the show on this a.m. briefly and was reminded again of a fleeting memory that comes and goes in relation to this storyline.

I remember a voiceover from Jonathan Frid advising fans to tune in for a special episode that was going to explain the background and true motives of the Leviathans.  The voiceover played over the end titles of several shows during the week in Jan. (?) 1970, a week that, if memory serves, ended with the broadcast of the episode in which Barnabas spills the beans to Julia.  Fascinating if only because it rates as DS' only clip show, though some of the "clips" were restagings with new material.

I also remember a similar voice over leading up to the broadcast of the second show run yesterday (Tuesday) on Sci Fi.  Frid, or maybe the program announcer, advised fans to be sure and tune in for an episode that would have pivotal importance in the story.  The episode that resulted did indeed seem very exciting to me at the time.  I was pretty much unaware of the widespread fannish dislike of Leviathan; I thought it was a very cool storyline.

Does anybody else remember this second announcement regarding yesterday's show?  (You'd obviously have had to be watching back in 1970 to be able to remember it!)

Current Talk '03 I / DS radio commercials
« on: June 02, 2003, 03:45:42 PM »
I normally never listen to the radio, but last night had dinner with a friend in a restaurant where they had the box on, and tuned to an oldies station (which suited us just fine).  Anyhow, I nearly dropped my fork when a certain familiar musical refrain came on and I could hear an announcer advising listeners to tune into Dark Shadows, the famous supernatural soap opera, ever day Monday through Friday!  I couldn't hear well enough to tell whether this was an old commercial from the ABC days (back in the Sixties) or something Sci Fi paid them to run.  The thing is that they also ran a commercial for 60 minutes that sounded old, so I thought it might be something they do on the program.  I'm afraid this is all the info I can provide.

Has anyone else out there heard any radio commercials for the show lately?

Current Talk '03 I / The Ice B*tch and the Lovelorn Lad
« on: May 28, 2003, 11:14:34 PM »
Today's shows had more great scenes.  I've always loved that little exchange between Willie and Liz in the Collinwood Foyer.  Liz is at her iciest (I was surprised that Willie wasn't chipping frost off his face after he beat a hasty retreat).  Karlen played Willie's reactions with such honest, beautiful realism.  Between them, the actors created an amazing little gem out of what could have been just a standard scene.

I also loved the exchanges between Willie and Barnabas in episode #2.  Even though their putative "great friendship" violates the established history between the two, the actors played the scene with a lot of depth.  I've noticed that Karlen often brought out the best in Frid.  He played his scenes today with beautiful skill and restraint, I thought.

I just love the moment when Willie is telling Barnabas how sorry he is to be deserting him in his hour of need, and he pouts up his lips in the cutest way, like a doting father turning down his favorite child's request for ice cream.  So sweet.  Karlen has the most wonderfully expressive face!  Makes me want to send him a big splashy birthday card, thanking him for making my day again today.

Oh, and Grayson was FABULOUS, of course, but you already knew that.

I'm sure the TLATKLS brigade appreciated how charming Katie looked in her boudoir ensemble.

Current Talk '03 I / At the risk of sounding BA-NAHHLLL
« on: May 27, 2003, 09:31:33 PM »
Well, I had the show on this a.m., beeswing-eyed after my delirious, rained-out weekend in the Vermont mountains (thank the Gods Maria von Trapp did not appear over the hills coloraturing about the Sound of Music, for if she had done, I would have had to brain her with my earthenware phallus, the one with the purple mardi-gras bead choker).  Who should come waltzing in but Nicholas Blair, paying upon a visit upon his dear, OLD, down-on-her-luck-again, OLD buddy, Mrs. Angelique Rumson.  PRICELESS!  see, stuff like this is what always makes me think the Leviathans was the best period in the show's history--certainly the best of all the present-time arcs.  Scenes like this are incredibly rich because of how well writers and actors were able to make use of two years or more of existing subtext.

I do love the use Angelique makes of her little keepsake from Boston.  (Makes note to self--DON'T order any cute little tchotchkes from the Franklin Mint as a hostess gift for Mrs. Rumson's next kaffeeklatsch on Little Windward Island.)

Did anybody else notice that Sky's "burning poker" got a LOT bigger in episode 2 than it had been in episode one.  Hmmm, somehow I always had the feeling that Sky's poker got bigger the longer he gripped it.  Gripped it firmly and with emotion.  Hey, Sky, can I hold that poker for you?  Need me to help you out with that, dude?  Hmmmmmm....

Also glimpsed Camera 2 in the mirror when Sky and Ang were kissing in episode 1.  Not really a very serious blooper since you would hardly have noticed it unless you'd watched the episode several times, as I have done.

Another favorite moment of mine (and, I believe, the MB's as well) is coming up, when Julia finds out about Barn's latest "talk" with Megan.  Can't wait!

BTW, Dodie Smith--have you read I Capture the Castle yet? Great book and they're making it into a movie :)

I had never heard of "I Capture the Castle" -- unless you mentioned it before, Luciaphil -- until I spotted it on display at my local Border's a couple of weeks ago.  Of course I bought it right away, remembering that Dodie Smith had written one of my favorite childhood books.

Not sure if/when I might actually get around to reading it.  I noticed that it's one of J. K. Rowling's favorites -- I finally got back to Harry P. recently after a two-year detour, and am reading "Chamber of Secrets."  Wonder if there's any way in hell I can get through "Goblet" before "Phoenix" comes out?  Not bloody likely ...  ;D

My copy of "Castle" is the trade ppbk. movie tie-in (usually like to avoid those) ... I thought maybe the movie had come and gone already...

BTW, I'm not sure if we ever clarified this a while back -- Dodie Smith was one of the writers on "The Uninvited" -- though you probably knew that.

Current Talk '03 I / Grayson Hall, Glamour Goddess!
« on: May 07, 2003, 04:03:29 PM »
Well, this a.m. I had the show on again while getting ready for work.  I turned around to see Grayson come in the room and my jaw dropped.  That black coat with the black fur collar and the little touch of color with the scarf has got to rate as one of Julia's most fabou ensembles to date!  She simply SCREAMED glamour!  The coat had kind of a Weimar look to it... the hair of course was the summit of Sixties glamour.

I love the scenes between Julia and Stokes in these episodes.  What a pity Thayer had to take time off again to make a movie (I think that's why he disappears for a couple of months around this point).  I always thought Grayson and Thayer played off one another so beautifully.

Also LOVE the actress who played Mrs. Hutchins.  What was her name?  This is the first of 3 roles she played on DS.  I believe she was in hoDS as Mrs. Pettibone, too.  (One of my pal Nicky's fave characters!)

Current Talk '03 I / Glamourpuss Julia
« on: April 24, 2003, 07:31:59 PM »
I happened to have the show on briefly this a.m. and nearly fainted at the glamorousness of Grayson's appearance in episode 1.  The tailored coat (thank you Ohrbach's, you FINALLY found something that did not make Our Favorite Doctor look like the Last of the Frumps!), the gorgeous scarf (looked chocolate brown from where I was sitting), the hair, the makeup, the earrings--the tout ensemble was the SUMMIT of perfection!

Joan looked really superb, as well.  I hope both ladies went out for lunch that day and amused themselves with the clank of dropping jaws all round.

Hope they both ordered lots of expensive dishes and charged it all to Dan Curtis!

Current Talk '03 I / Liz Goes Psychedelic
« on: April 23, 2003, 09:56:54 PM »
From the montage, I take it that Liz's Leviathan Nightmare was aired today (but maybe it was yesterday).  What did folks think?  Although entertaining to watch, I always find myself clueless as to just how it's meant to accomplish the results of the dream.

Beautiful shot of Joan's horrified face in the funhouse mirror. Even in a state of shock, Liz manages to look stately!

Current Talk '03 I / Chris Jennings, Were-STUD
« on: April 18, 2003, 06:52:21 PM »
Does anybody else out there think that Chris is looking hotter than ever these days?

Something about the outfits they gave him to wear and how he's combing his hair, which he's grown out slightly ... He looks good enough to eat!

There's a scene coming up where Julia is playing with Chris' coat buttons.  I always wonder whether Grayson was toying with just ... undressing him right there on the set!  Sam referred to Briscoe somewhere or other as "too handsome" and I'm afraid he may not have appreciated the onscreen chem between his wife and the gorgeous young actor.

Ah, to be back in 1969, taking a moonlit stroll through Central Park and having Don Briscoe glide up on his skateboard, shirttails flying in the breeze.

Current Talk '03 I / Paging Luciaphil!
« on: April 04, 2003, 04:43:33 PM »
Luciaphil, darling,

I'm sure you're very busy these days, but I would *love* to hear your comments on the gorgeous ensemble Judith wore for this latest phase of a certain storyline.

Would have been great if the script had been switched to have Gregory refer to her at some point as the "Scarlet Woman of Babylon," but they clearly weren't that quick on the uptake.

I like to think of it as Judith's "Hong Kong bordello madam" outfit.  Some of the fabric looks like Chinese satin to my untutored eye.

Anxiously awaiting your eagle-eyed verdict,

Testing. 1, 2, 3... / Ay caramba!
« on: March 31, 2003, 11:05:51 PM »
Just noticed that the outbox for my personal messages (whatever the hell they're called in YaBBspeak) is now showing up in Spanish as "bandejas de salida" :)).

I'd love it if each of the buttons was in a different foreign language--French, German, whatever--would give more of that cosmopolitan atmosphere I associate with the fabulous Collins family.

In case the information would be of help to the Moderators, I am French Active, Greek Passive, Chinese ambidextrous and Japanese proficient...

Current Talk '03 I / Scream, Pretty Quentin!
« on: March 31, 2003, 04:04:55 PM »
Yesterday (after a busy Saturday attending the latest Peace Rally on the Boston Common, followed up with a zine fair at the Mass. College of Art), I had a couch potato morning watching quite a few of the DS episodes that will be broadcast this week on Sci Fi.

One of my favorite moments was a pair of particularly juicy (almost, one might say, orgasmic) screams from Mr. Quentin Collins.

It reminded me of that "classic" ABC TV Movie of the Week, Scream, Pretty Peggy!  Only the title would have to be Scream, Pretty Quentin.  Such a pretty man, such a pretty mouth.

Hail the Lady, for such a snowy day, it sure is WARM in here.
