Current Talk '06 I / A View of South Wales
« on: April 11, 2006, 01:33:36 PM »
One of my favorite episodes in all of DS is when
Dr. Julia Hoffman tracks Quentin's portrait, disguised by a painting by Charles Delaware Tate of a landscape, "A view of South Wales," to its current owner, Conde-Nast type tycoon Schuyler "Sky" Rumson... only to learn that Rumson bought the painting as a gift for his wife... none other than Angelique, the former Mrs. Barnabas Collins!  I just love how the two actresses play the scene... and so far as I am aware, this is the last time we see the two together in their fully-developed personalities; when next Julia sees Angelique, she's more or less an amnesiac living in 1840.  But, I digress... I had kind of an ugly day yesterday, and when I settled in at home decided to watch this episode again.
I was very amused to see that the bill Dr. Hoffman found in Harrison Monroe's papers for the painting actually listed the work's title as "Q View of South Wales"!  Evidently, somebody on the production team had quite the sense of humor.  And although I own the episode as an MPI VHS, it was clear enough to spot what was going on. Too rich!

Current Talk '06 I / Joan Bennett
« on: April 07, 2006, 08:47:07 PM »
I just wanted to share that often when Dark Shadows comes to mind, I think of Joan Bennett saying "Bahnabas" and there's something about that regal, rich, velvet-smooth, patrician voice of hers that just drips class and refinement... THAT, for me, defines the tone of the series more strongly than any other element.

I caught Joan recently in "The Eyes of Charles Sand," a failed pilot that aired in the "ABC Movie of the Week" series, around 1972.  She looked so glamorous--she had very little to do, but her look reminded me of Liz in the 1967 period.  What a fabulous woman she was.

Current Talk '06 I / Episode 443 question
« on: March 07, 2006, 05:13:31 PM »
Do we have any idea who the actress is in the shot of Millicent with Josette's fan in today's slideshow?  From the costume it looks as if the character is meant to be a maid.

I think I have only ever seen that episode once, although I do have it on videotape.  Time to watch it again.

I know it's absurdly predictable of me, but I love the shot of the Countess with Bradford.  Love to see Herself looking so regal!

Current Talk '06 I / The Voluptuous Horror of Grayson Hall
« on: March 07, 2006, 12:29:13 AM »
I'm in Heaven over the first two images from the Leviathan storyline today featuring Grayson Hall, first in Julia-goes-off-the-cliff mode, then in Julia-the-sly-artful-minx mode.  Heaven!

To me, Grayson Hall's acting is like Audrey Hepburn's "Breakfast at Tiffany's" Givenchy dresses.  With such perfection, who needs anything else??

Current Talk '06 I / DIED ... BY ... FIRE!!
« on: February 15, 2006, 09:17:40 PM »
Can I just share that I'm finding the special V Day heart of an evilly glaring Laura Collins to be a raging HOOT?

The whole thing is (to my odd sense of humor) a perfect comment on the whole insanity of that "holiday."

I'd love to know which scene the image is from.  It reminds me of that wonderful moment when Laura is doing one of her spells at the fireplace and Liz taps her on the shoulder to have Laura turn and practically hiss with bared teeth.  Great, classic stuff.

Folks, there was no CGI back then.  It was all, every inch, just Diana Millay... doing her thing!

Just saw a pre-release page on amazon for the WB's short-lived Grosse Pointe series DVD release.  For fans of the WB, the series producers got away with an amazingly barbed, witty skewering of the network and its zany practices.

Not being an industry insider, I have no idea how accurate all these goings-on were in terms of life on the set of the typical WB series, but what makes this so watchable is the funny writing and the great ensemble cast (including adorable Kyle Howard).  Darren Star was the series creator and wrote a few of the scripts, I think, and it helps that the opening credits feature the terrific Tom Jones song, "Sex Bomb."

Current Talk '06 I / "Blood and Roses" and DS
« on: January 17, 2006, 08:24:07 PM »
Fans, towards the end of a somewhat stressful weekend, I felt in need of a treat, and pulled out my ageing (getting on to 15 years old now) VHS of Roger Vadim's film "Blood and Roses" (originally titled in French, "Et mourir de plaisir"--To die of pleasure!).  I'd forgotten just how many of the elements we know and love in DS were present in this early 1960s feature film.  A family curse, a resemblance to a mysterious portrait, a costume ball, a mystical melody that heralds the appearance of the vampire, the withering of a rose as a sign of the vampire's touch, a symbol-laden prophetic dream (brilliantly filmed by cinematographer Claude Renoir), 18th century personalities impinging on a 20th century setting, and, most strikingly,
the appearance of a bloodstained white dress in a mirror, a sequence restaged in the 1795 storyline in the scenes where Angelique was preparing for her wedding to Barnabas.
Maddeningly, the movie appears to be unavailable in any format.  The Paramount VHS release is the US theatrical print which is missing something like 15 minutes of footage that was in the original European release.  For years, I've been hoping that a restored print would be made available.  I can only guess that the source materials for this simply do not exist.

Nevertheless, the movie is something to keep your eye out for, if you're in the mood for something "in the vein of" DS (Patti, I honest-to-Goddess did not mean to commit that tacky pun!).  I actually think scenes from this movie play more like the original television DS than either hoDS or NoDS did.

Current Talk '05 II / Episode 382
« on: December 13, 2005, 06:13:32 PM »
Once again, I salute the MB for his skill at capturing special moments on DS!  I'm in love with the image of Grayson Hall, Clarice Blackburn, and Joan Bennett together from today's 1795 episode, #382. Just as fabulous is the great snapshot of a horrified Natalie and Abigail gloating over Vicki's "satanic" charm bracelet.  Priceless!

Thanks again, MB!

Calendar Events / Announcements '05 II / Semi OT: Poltergiest: The Legacy
« on: December 11, 2005, 09:54:35 PM »
Dear Fans, back in the mid 90s, there was a series on called Poltergeist: the Legacy.  It was about a group of people investigating supernatural/paranormal occurrences around the world, and was set in a spooky mansion on Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay area.  There were a number of episodes that reminded me of DS, and the situation between the head of the group (played by wonderful Dutch character actor Derek de Lint) and the psychiatrist, Dr. Rachel Corrigan (portrayed by the equally fabulous Helen Shaver) had a certain resonance between a certain tormented member of the Undead and his own "Physician to the Vampire."

A friend alerted me that MGM are releasing the first season of this series on DVD.  Season one is slated for an early Feb release.  I have mixed feelings about this, given what a mess MGM made of the DS revival series release.  Am hoping that the reviews demonstrate better handling of this series, though I have to say that the mock-up of the box artwork does not inspire confidence...

I am posting this here for the benefit of other fans of both shows who may be interested.

Best, G.

Current Talk '05 II / The December 4th Episodes
« on: December 05, 2005, 04:20:09 PM »
I don't know whether or not to start a new thread for this, but I have to say I'm just groovin' on the gorgeous captures the Mysterioius One posted for Episode #638!  For some reason, Julia's expressions make me think Grayson should have done a softcore version of, oh, I don't know, "Gloriana, She Wolf Matron of the SS"!  And Vicki's expression in the third one looks as if she's feeling Jeff's fingers somewhere OTHER THAN her cheek!

Then there's the fact that Vicki looks like a Mardi Gras grotesque in the fourth capture--that couldn't have possibly been deliberate, could it? hmmm? *maintains poker face*

I love that shot of Julia and Chris together in the Leviathans show.  Funny that there are dramatic scenes involving the two of them in both the '68 and '69 shows today.

kudos once again to the MB!

Current Talk '05 II / Episode 113
« on: December 01, 2005, 04:27:54 PM »
A big thank you to the Mysterious Benefactor for today's beautiful series of images from episode 113.  It's been on my list of episodes I need to track down and add to my collection.  I'll have to see if I can figure out which of the MPI Collector's series tapes it's on and order it as a little Yuletide amuse-gueule.

I've been wanting to see Clarice's scene when she expresses Mrs Johnson's emotions at the unmasking of the killer.  I can tell just from the captures that I'm in for quite a treat.  Looks as if David Henesy did an exceptional job in that show, too.

Thanks again!

Calendar Events / Announcements '05 II / A Dark Shadows Halloween!
« on: October 31, 2005, 04:54:45 PM »
Hey, isn't a Dark Shadows Halloween the very BEST kind?

I was delighted this a.m. walking past some display windows in Harvard Square to see the annual show of old 1950s and 60s monster-themed LPs that always show up in one of those windows (for fans in the area, I'm talking about the windows in the building that houses Harvard's Holyoke Center, with Cambridge Trust and Au Bon Pain on the street level).  This year I spotted such gems as Boris Karloff reciting Edgar Allan Poe, dramatizations of some Lovecraft tales, a hysterical "Mad Monster Bash" LP featuring Hans Conreid and beloved Alice Pearce (the *definitive* Gladys Kravitz for Ancient Blood fans), some jazz combo thing wittily titled "Songs our Mummy taught us" AND, right there in the mix, the Dark Shadows Soundtrack Album Featuring "Barnabas" and "Quentin"!

It was great to see DS remembered in such a vintage group, and to have it acknowledged for the classic it truly is!

Best Witches to ye all!

Current Talk '05 II / Mrs Purdy
« on: October 28, 2005, 11:10:11 PM »
Can someone please help out an aging fan?  I'm totally blocking the name of the fabulous actress who guested as Mrs Purdy in today's 1840 episode (in the slideshow).  She played a couple of roles on DS--mostly day work--and had a marvelous little cameo as Mrs Pettibone in hoDS (the movie).

I'm very annoyed with myself for forgetting her name.  Wasn't she also Buffie Harrington's landlady in PT 1970?

Current Talk '05 II / Episode #89
« on: October 27, 2005, 09:27:36 PM »
This (on today's front page slide show) is one of the shows I have never seen, and I had always wondered how the meeting with the big boys from the office had been staged.

I am about to die from suppressed giggles at that first image, though.  In my mind the same tune keeps playing, over and over again, and the words seem to gibber from the lips of a madman "You put your left hand in, you put your left hand out, you put your left hand in and you shake it all about, Burke Devlin does the hokey-pokey and he turns himself around, THAT's what it's all about!"

Current Talk '05 II / Episode #348
« on: October 25, 2005, 10:58:16 PM »
Just doffing my cap once again to that most glamorous and generous of men, the Mysterious Benefactor--I'm about to DIE here over the fabulous captures in today's shows!

It's hard to choose, particularly given the DELICIOUS Louis Edmonds smirks on view in today's 1966 show, but I find it hard to beat the grand, goofy extravagance of Grayson Hall emoting Dr. Hoffman's HORROR at the ghastly results of her experiment!

It's another photo finish moment here on the DS boards!

Many thanks, MB, for making my day yet again.
