Calendar Events / Announcements '09 I / Semi OT: spoof of hoDS
« on: March 03, 2009, 11:51:26 PM »
Fans,

This short clip (described as dating to the 1970s but obviously much more recent) has a final "sting" shot that is VERY reminiscent of a shot that fans of the film house of Dark Shadows (1970) will instantly recognize.  I don't want to give any more away but I'll just say--keep watching when it looks as if credits are beginning to roll at the end because that is when "it" happens!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yD7Ggl7Mx3g

The clip runs for around 5 minutes I believe...  really something just for a giggle.

Current Talk '09 I / LeviaLiz
« on: February 25, 2009, 12:56:50 AM »
Just a thank you to MB for allowing us to enjoy the spectacle of LeviaLiz in all her glamorous glory giving Willie a FREEZING reception upon his historic return to Collinwood in 1970.  This has to be one of my all time favorite scenes on DS--poor dear Willie is completely unaware of just how very little Liz cares about the fact that he's returned or anything he's saying.  Truly priceless!

I wonder whether we'll get at least one more capture from the Leviathan era before the 1970 bits switch to Parallel Time?

cheers, G.

Current Talk '09 I / The Ranch Poodle Brigade
« on: February 10, 2009, 11:06:51 PM »
I'm getting quite a charge out of today's screen capture of Jebulous and Pruno heatedly conferring in a darkened foyer at Collinwood.  I am old enough to remember when these shaggy coats and bits of woolly trim were fashionable on men's winter coats, but I'm still thinking of these two as "the ranch poodle brigade" and I'm wondering whether Bruno's hairpiece ever went flying when push came to shove.

Thanks again MB for brightening another dreary Winter afternoon here at the Great House!

cheers, G.

Current Talk '09 I / Sweet Countess
« on: February 06, 2009, 08:43:48 PM »
I wonder if I'm the only one here who sees a distinct resemblance between Grayson Hall as the Countess du Pres in today's magnificent screen shot, and Dr. Frank N. Furter in the Rocky Horror Picture Show.  It looks as if Grayson is incanting these lines:

I'm just a Sweet Transvestite from Transexual, Transylvania.

So why don't you stay for the night? Or maybe a bite?
I could show you my favourite obsession.
I've been making a man with blond hair and a tan
And he's good for relieving my tension

Fun stuff!  Thanks to the MB for another glorious image!

Current Talk '09 I / Flames ... flames on the side of her face...
« on: February 05, 2009, 09:46:55 PM »
Fans, I knew when I first saw today's fabulous image of Mrs Johnson on a tear while Maggie seems to be in the middle of saying "talk to the hand" .... that there was something familiar about it.

I just now realized that it reminds me of this (in)famous clip from the movie Clue that has someone, maybe Madeline Kahn, talking about how another female character makes her so angry that "I can't breathe and ... I feel ... it's as if ... flames ... flames on the side of my face..."

Even without these references, the shot of the two women is pretty darn hysterical!  Way to go MB!

Another possibility is that Mrs J is complaining that nobody is paying HER extra money to model Junior Sophisticates ensembles...

Current Talk '09 I / Suki Forbes Rules!
« on: February 02, 2009, 11:28:43 PM »
Once again, my heartfelt thanks to MB for today's delicious portrait of Mrs. Suki Forbes.  I really wish Jane Draper had been given more episodes on DS.  Suki's appearances are among the very best thing to hit the 1795 storyline IMO.

Wouldn't it have been hysterical to have had Suki and Bathia doing a scene together.  The mind reels...

Current Talk '09 I / Genet Moment for Grayson
« on: January 23, 2009, 01:22:43 AM »
Extra kudos to MB for today's new capture.  Not only is this a superb shot of the Goddess Known as Grayson Hall in character as Julia, and not only is Julia sporting one of my favorite brooches, but I think this shot actually captures some of the more subtle elements at work in the Leviathans storyline before they went for "everything including the kitchen sink."  (More shots of Bruno flogging that wolfie!  More scenes of Megan swooning before Barnabas' gaping fangs!)

The dialogue and the imagery actually make me think of the mood of certain of the plays of Jean Genet, of which Grayson Hall was a famous exponent.  I've noticed other moments on DS reminiscent of Bertolt Brecht and the very expressionist styles of theatre pioneered in the Circle in the Square and other houses where Grayson worked as a young actress in the 1950s.

Fabulous, beautiful work!

Fans,

My talented friend Caroline, a very gifted young artist, has created this exquisite portrait of a youthful Magda Rakosi having a thoughtful moment on the road:

Current Talk '09 I / Funny DS 1967 storyline review blog
« on: January 16, 2009, 12:26:13 AM »
I stumbled upon this via Google while looking for some shots of Magda for a friend's project.  If you enjoy a certain kind of dry, offkey humor, maybe you'll find this board as funny as I did.  It's this guy named James in London watching the 1967 DVDs and writing his own little synopsis/reviews of what happens:

http://www.soapchat.net/showthread.php?t=142843&page=4

He uses catchphrases for a number of the players--Liz is Joan Bennett (well, of course), Julia is "Dr. Tootsie", Carolyn is Groovy Sixties Girl, Willie is referred to as Harvey something or other (from Karlen's work on Cagney & Lacey), etc.

Here's a typical snippet:

"I cannot permit you to continue your existence!" Barnabas tells Dr Tootsie, but then she tells him she's been working on
this great new diet plan that could cure him of his vampirism. He's interested for a while, but then decides to kill her
anyway. That's when she tells him she's treating Maggie the Dead Waitress and that sooner or later Maggie will recover
her memory and blow the whistle on him, unless she is alive to stop her! That Dr Tootsie--she's so nuts.

cheers, G.

Current Talk '09 I / Julia is singing my song
« on: January 14, 2009, 05:05:45 PM »
Golly, today's screen capture and caption really hits the target.  "If I could only think!" indeed.  Given that Chris seems to be on the point of leaving the room, perhaps the good doctor's sentence should be finished:  "If I could only think, I might remember where I put the prophylactics, Chris!  Chris! Oh, Chris!"

Love the brooch Julia is wearing on this day.  I loved the bangs from the 69/70 period of Leviathan.

Current Talk '09 I / Mordecai Grimes
« on: January 08, 2009, 11:46:23 PM »
My thanks to MB for showcasing Thayer David's vivid Mordecai Grimes characterization in today's snapshot.  Even though Mordecai only appeared in something like four or five shows, he brought an element of piss-and-vinegar realism to the unfolding of the 1840 plot that was sorely needed.

Mordecai always reminds me of one of Thayer's later characters--Rev. Strack in the film NoDS.  Fabulous work.

I particularly remember a scene where Mordecai and Gabriel are spewing vitriol at one another in the drawing room.  If I remember it correctly, Gabriel makes Mordecai wheel him in, treating him like a house servant.  Grand stuff.

Current Talk '08 II / The FABULOUS Cavada Humphrey!
« on: December 18, 2008, 04:29:38 PM »
My hat's off again to our Darling Mysterioso, el Benefactoro (pardon my hideous mauling of Spanish),

for featuring one of my all time favorite guest players today--the beautiful, flamboyant, fabulous Cavada Humphrey!  When I went to IMDB just now to make sure her surname did not end with an s (my memory is in tatters these days, alas), I was startled to see that Cavada passed away on July 11, 2007.  Was there an obit posted here?  I don't recall seeing it, but I am often away out in the woods and fields doing my Nature Boy routine in July, so perhaps I missed it.

One of my all time favorite moments on all of DS is Madam Findlay's arrival at Collinwood, when she strides imperiously around the drawing room and waves her arms and sways and speaks cryptically of the battle waging within these walls--truly classic stuff.

She also got one of the most melodramatic "farewell" scenes in the series' history.

Interestingly, her role as Madam Findlay wasn't Cavada Humphrey's sole DS connection.  For awhile she shared rooms with novelist Madeleine L'Engle, who penned the classic children's novel A Wrinkle in Time.  Madeleine L'Engle married Hugh Franklin, who appeared as Collins family lawyer Richard Garner in the 1966 episodes of DS.

Thanks again for featuring such a distinctive, memorable presence from our Dark Shadows memory-hoard!

cheers, G.

MB, I just LOVE today's screencapture!  Julia looks as if she has HAD it with a certain reluctant vampire!  Just love how mean and eee-vil she looks here!

thanks for the holiday cheer!

Current Talk '08 II / Today's Capture--Episode #612
« on: October 30, 2008, 04:58:14 PM »
I wish I could think of something to write about today's capture that *wasn't* obscene.

Minus the caption, it looks as if Harry stepped in something nasty that he needs to scrape off his shoe before his Mom catches sight of it.

How, um, special to have the Thespian Genius of Craig Slocum to light our day on the eve of Halloween!

Cheers!

Current Talk '08 II / Barnabas, Roxanne and Julia
« on: October 30, 2008, 03:39:46 PM »
Fans,

Thanks to an incredible sale on Amazon Vendor, I found DVD set #22 (for seventeen bucks plus change!) and it arrived last night.  While test driving the discs, I revisited the episode where
Barnabas met Regular Time Roxanne Drew for the first time at Sebastian Shaw's parlor.  I'd forgotten how poignantly Frid portrayed Barnabas' mingled joy and desire at meeting "his" Roxanne again.  I found myself thinking, "he's overjoyed to see her, and some girls would think he's a really creepy old man, but she's being nice."

I have to admit I Laughed Out Loud at the scene where Julia picked up the phone on Roxanne's call to cancel her dinner plans with Barnabas.  The look on Julia's face was truly priceless!  And then, the scene where Barnabas comes in like a little boy with a new candy cane and Julia is trying so hard not to roll her eyes.  The dialogue actually gave her the line, "Barnabas, why does it always have to be me who tries to tell you ..."   Another priceless moment.

I have to admit that the crowning gem was when Barnabas, with visibly controlled anger, informed her:  "Julia, I am seldom wrong about people!"  It was a wonder Julia didn't choke on her reassuring-therapist response "That's true ..."
I think of the Summer of 1970 as a less-than-successful period in the show's history, but this episode certainly was memorable ... and fun!

cheers, Gothick
