Calendar Events / Announcements '12 II / Grayson Hall--1965 Oscars footage
« on: December 27, 2012, 02:37:29 AM »
Fans, footage from the 1965 Oscarcast has been posted on Youtube which includes two glimpses of Grayson Hall, nominee for Best Supporting Actress of 1964 for her critically-acclaimed work in the film Night of the Iguana, in the audience at the ceremony.  First, the camera lingers on Grayson in the audience as her name is announced and she smiles a little nervously.  The second glimpse comes if you look carefully behind Miss Kedrova when she stops to give co-star Anthony Quinn an embrace; Grayson is smiling gloriously and you can get a glimpse of Sam sitting next to her:

I have been told that in the complete video, you can catch other glimpses of Mr. and Mrs. Hall at various points in the proceedings.

I absolutely love Grayson's gown and the heavy black couture earrings with which she accessorized it.  The gown makes me think of the work of revolutionary Sixties French designer, Courreges.  It would be fascinating to know specifics of the gown.

She looks utterly glamorous, radiant, and simply stunning!

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 II / Helena Bonham Carter appearance
« on: December 14, 2012, 01:53:17 AM »
Helena Bonharm-Carter appeared in a November 2012 episode of the Graham Norton Show.  The episode is available for viewing here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=hzaB2Pf1SzY&NR=1

Soon after HBC comes out there is a brief discussion of DS and the two male guests (Michael Buble and some rather twee comedian named something Whitehouse) rave about how much they both loved the film.

Helena also discusses her current release--she plays Miss Havisham in a new film version of Great Expectations, the Dickens novel.  I have always thought that was one of the inspirations for the original concept of DS.  In the novel, Miss Havisham has not left her home for many years because her bridegroom ran out, leaving her alone at the altar.  She wears a decaying wedding dress, lives in a Victorian gothic palace festooned with cobwebs and decayed finery, and keeps the banqueting hall as it was when laid for the wedding feast, with rats crawling in and out of what's left of her wedding cake and the other goodies.

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 II / #1 at the Blue Whale
« on: December 13, 2012, 04:36:16 AM »
I always thought the classic DS track "No. 1 at the Blue Whale" reminded me of a song that had been popular in the very early Sixties.  Today, my incredible co-worker Pete (who is like a living encyclopedia of 1960s pop music) was able to identify the song for me.  It was "Sleep walk" (how appropriate for DS!) by Santo and Johnny, originally released in 1959.  You can hear it for free here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1st_9KudWB0

The songs aren't really all that similar melodically are in terms of arrangement or texture; just a kind of feeling (to my ear) that makes one evoke the other.

Do you agree?

Current Talk '12 II / Malcolm Marmorstein article
« on: October 31, 2012, 05:30:44 PM »
Fans,

the author of this article had been in contact with me, and he sent me the link for the final version last weekend.  It looks interesting:

http://movieline.com/2012/10/08/who-created-barnabas-collins-dark-shadows-johnny-depp-tim-burton-jonathan-frid-dan-curtis/

Interesting to see the actual writers claim that THEY introduced the whole "reluctant/vulnerable" vampire theme--I had always read that that was Jonathan Frid's own contribution and the writers simply followed his lead.

The article includes Malcolm Marmorstein's views on Depp Shadows.  The short version:   he didn't like it.

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 II / Cher at Greystone
« on: October 23, 2012, 05:09:32 AM »
Tonight on my way home I read in Billy Masters' weekly gossip column that Cher is giving a concert at Greystone in honor of the 50th birthday of Elton John's husband, David Furnish.  The concert is going to be a private invitation only party, or so the report implied.

I do wonder if there will be a DS theme, although since the Eltons are English, I doubt whether they know anything about the series.

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 II / Dreams of Darkness
« on: October 15, 2012, 01:21:21 PM »
Fans,

This link to the trailer for a new 35 mm feature film by an independent filmmaker was posted on the "Monster Kids" board and I found the work evocative both of DS and Suspiria in some ways.  Beautiful photograph and locations.  Click on the link and when the page loads, the trailer begins playing automatically.

There's even a scene in the trailer that reminds me of a similar scene with Roxanne involving psychometry in PT 1970...

Current Talk '12 II / Angelique and Laura
« on: October 15, 2012, 03:59:45 AM »
For some reason today, I was recalling Laura and Angelique's big confrontation scene in 1897.  When Laura says to Our Favorite Witch:  "What does it feel like to succeed as a ... whatever you are... but to be a failure AS A WOMAN?"  I think it is one of the bitchiest moments in all DS history.

One of the tragedies that's bugging the hell out of me right now is that NoDS is being released in its unrestored form.  I was really looking forward to seeing the restored piano scene with its exchange between Laura and Angelique, where the spiteful witch informs her rival:  "Oh, he knows what's happening, Laura my darling, and for *the first time in his life* he's really enjoying it!"

In some weird alternate version of the DS multiverse, this second scene (which takes place in the AU world of the movies) could be see as Angelique's payback for what Laura taunted her with in 1897.

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 II / Jessica Chastain in Vanity Fair
« on: August 20, 2012, 06:46:37 PM »
I don't know if anyone cares at this point, but I noticed that Jessica Chastain--if I have her name right--the actress who played Carolyn in the '04 pilot, and who I don't remember at all from my one viewing of same--is on the cover of the latest issue of Vanity Fair as an exemplar of current cutting-edge fashion (again, if I am remembering correctly--my brain is in a sad state these days).

I think this is OT for just about everything but I'll just report it briefly here:  there are press releases circulating as of yesterday that one of the networks (NBC?) has commissioned a new Dracula TV series starring the epically luscious Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (of "Velvet Goldmine" and "The Tudors" fame) as the Count.  The blurb sounds distinctly lame but JRM fans will want to have a look.

It said something about the production company (Carnival something-or-other) being connected to super Brit-hit Downton Abbey, too.

Just reporting the news fwiw.

I still think Johnny Depp is at his best when he's in full, fabulous drag, and apparently I'm not the only one who thinks so:

As is well known around here, I'm not a fan of remakes, but Depp as Dr. Frank N. Furter would be something to see.

Current Talk '12 I / Happy Forty-Six, DS!!!
« on: June 27, 2012, 01:13:58 PM »
Fans, it was forty-six years ago that we first tuned in to hear those mystic words uttered: "My name is Victoria Winters..."  On June 27, 1966.  (I personally did not start watching until nearly two years later, in June 1968, so I have no personal memories of this day to share.  But I know there are fans here who started watching on this day.)

Happy Birthday DS!

cheers, Gothique

Current Talk '12 I / Joan Bennett: "Hackneyed Dialogue" on DS
« on: June 23, 2012, 02:20:54 PM »
Fans,

looking through the Collinsport Historical Society site, I found this clipping from what is clearly a late Summer or Early Fall 1966 newspaper article interviewing Joan Bennett about her work on DS.  If this clipping was passed around by fans in the early years, it may account for why the story spread for awhile that Joan "hated" being on DS:

http://www.collinsporthistoricalsociety.com/2012/01/joan-bennett-talks-dark-shadows.html

Note that in the interview, she refers to already having a contract to do a play in February 1967--Liz's first "breakdown" as a result of a certain plot incident coincided with this.

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 I / Creepy-bopper
« on: June 13, 2012, 03:06:48 AM »
This was somebody's film school project.  It's a short film that runs about 8 minutes attempting to profile a kid in 1969 who is obsessed with DS.  I realized watching it just how obsessed a fan I am since some of the memorabilia shown was not available until the end of 1969 or later... and that jumped right out at me as being out of period.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lSHzElZ5rA&feature=related

I missed the NY Times calling us "Creepy-boppers."  And honestly, I think you'd have to be really stoned to keep those damned plastic fangs in your mouth for more than a couple of minutes. Those things tasted awful.

cheers, G.

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 I / Possible New Munsters Series
« on: June 06, 2012, 09:22:38 PM »
Last night I was reading about plans to do a new series of The Munsters on one of the major networks.  This time around, it sounds as if the series is going to be a full-on horror/drama series rather than a comedy.  The official blurb says that Herman's artificially assembled body is starting to rot and he needs to find a living human "donor" for a new heart.  Sounds tasty, doesn't it?  What surprised me is this time around, Eddie is described as a "child werewolf" which I definitely don't recall being part of the original scenario.  Makes me wonder if they're going to grab anything not nailed down from the 2012 Depp Shadows movie for this series.

I won't be watching, but no doubt I will be reading at least some of the reviews if this makes it to the airwaves.
