Calendar Events / Announcements '13 II / Kate Jackson news
« on: November 18, 2013, 06:46:15 AM »
There is an item about Kate Jackson in this online column. I attempted to copy the relevant paragraph which comes towards the end of the current column dated Nov. 11 but the copy functionality is blocked:

http://www.billymasters.com/active/active.htm

The item is about Kate's efforts to write her memoirs.  The book was originally announced for May 2011 publication.  The latest revised date is Feb. 2015.  According to Masters, Kate has had difficulties getting beyond her outline.  Let's hope she's able get down to working on it over this Winter.

Best,

It's pretty much off topic, but the complete COLUMBO box set is today's deal (11/5/2013).  It's around 60 bucks and the usual retail price is around 160.

I think at least a couple of DS stars appeared in guest roles on Columbo.  I remember a rumor that Grayson did one but it would appear that that was not true.  I think Columbo was one of the few 1970s series Thayer DIDN'T appear on...

A friend sent me this video, the product of Fred Schneider (of the B-52s) and his "The Superions" campy side-project:

I hesitate to specify, but if you watch you'll definitely spot some familiar DS allusions (pace the Bil Baird thread earlier in particular).

Great fun for Halloween!

Current Talk '13 II / Alec Newman as Barnabas
« on: October 22, 2013, 11:19:46 PM »
This clip from the 2004 DS is the only bit ever to be released (officially and to my own personal knowledge at least).  It used to be on Alec Newman's website but is no longer there, but a nice fan uploaded it to Youtube.  Alec Newman as Barnabas and Marley Shelton (hope I'm spelling her name properly) as Victoria Winters (sporting what seems to me a very Carolyn Stoddard-like look):

Happy Halloween.

Calendar Events / Announcements '13 II / Peter Turgeon in De Duva (1968)
« on: October 21, 2013, 11:53:41 PM »
I stumbled across this on Youtube just now and was surprised to see Peter Turgeon amongst the cast members (as Uncle Anders).  De Duva circulated in museum and library showings when I was growing up in the 1970s.  It is a short film in black and white done as a satire on Bergman, especially WILD STRAWBERRIES and DAY OF WRATH, with actors speaking fake Swedish (really quite clever if you listen closely) and subtitles:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8X2QmLWWxq4

The movie lasts about 14 minutes.

Not sure if it's on topic for us, but I saw a report on another site that in the first episode of the new series of American Horror Story, this time subtitled Coven, there's a scene in which Boss Witch and Grand Poohbah Jessica Lange releases someone from a chained coffin.

I personally have zero interest in the series at this point, but it might be amusing to have those who are watching (and I know you're out there) check in with any further plot points that seem oh so familiar to us DS fans.

Apparently the writer of these shows is quite the fan himself... recalling earlier installments that seem to have had a number of references to our show on board...

Calendar Events / Announcements '13 II / Eva Green is in PENNY DREADFUL
« on: October 11, 2013, 08:22:53 PM »
Eva Green is mentioned as a cast member of next year's new supernatural Victorian horror series PENNY DREADFUL (not to be confused with the fabulous film series hostessed by my beloved Niece of the same name).  The cast list as notated in this release suggests a very high profile project:

Billie Piper (aka Doctor Who's Rose Tyler) is joining Penny Dreadful on Showtime, a reimagining of Gothic Victorian horror which already features Josh Hartnett, Eva Green and Timothy Dalton in its cast.

Billie Piper may be making a special guest appearance as a returning Rose Tyler in November’s 50th Anniversary Doctor WhoSpecial, but soon she’ll be trading in the TARDIS for another bout of Victorian supernaturalism.

Announced in a press release, the singer-actress has been cast to star in Showtime’s upcoming Penny Dreadful TV series, which shall begin production this fall with a 2014 premiere in mind. Piper is set to play Brona Croft, an Irish transplant who’s come to Victorian London to escape a dark and sordid past…only to find something far more dark in the way of spectral paintings, Undead tourists and reanimated science projects!

Piper joins a cast that already includes Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear and Harry Treadaway.

Penny Dreadful is created and spearheaded by John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator, Sweeney Todd), who is producing alongside Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Mendes’ frequent Neal Street collaborator Pippa Harris. Juan Antonio Bayona of The Orphanage has already signed on to direct the first two episodes of a series that aims to reimagine the creations of Oscar Wilde, Mary Shelly and Bram Stoker, among others. Current Talk '13 II / Me-TV Network
« on: October 09, 2013, 05:05:09 PM »
A friend sent me a note this morning saying there's a rumor on the Internet that the Me-TV network, which shows many classic TV shows (some of them, such as THE ROGUES from around 1965-66, previously unknown to me, but excellent, quality television), has signed a deal to run DARK SHADOWS, the original 1966-71 series.

If true, this would be an EXCELLENT showcase for our series, and make it even more popular.  With series such as AMERICAN HORROR STORY and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES constantly referring to DS in their publicity (and in at least some cases, plotlines), I think young people are curious, and often wind up becoming very enthusiastic viewers of our show.

Let's hope this will be confirmed via official news release soon.

Calendar Events / Announcements '13 II / Sleepy Hollow and Depp Shadows
« on: September 16, 2013, 11:04:26 PM »
I just played this trailer, which practically qualifies as a mini-episode of the new Sleepy Hollow series starting this evening (9/16)--I spotted a few visual and other references that suggest the "writers and producers of Star Trek" are big fans of the Burton/Depp DARK SHADOWS.  Warning, SPOILERS if you plan to watch tonight (or record it and watch in the week), and you don't like spoilers, you'll probably want to wait and watch this trailer till AFTER you see the episode:

When I was young, Ichabod Crane was a gawky, tremulous scholar.  Now he's a hot, hunky soldier with an Oxbridge accent.  Times change, and not just from the 18th to the 21st century...

Current Talk '13 II / OT: Karloff's Farewell
« on: September 11, 2013, 04:19:30 PM »
Since I consider Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, John Carradine, Peter Lorre et al to be spiritual grandfathers to DS, I thought it would be worth reporting that the cable channel Cozi TV is scheduled to show Karloff's final known appearance on film.  An episode of the Gene Barry series NAME OF THE GAME called, I think, "The White Birch," is supposed to air at 3:30 a.m. on Friday Sept. 20.  Please doublecheck your listings before programming your device.

It is said that this was the last time dear Boris went before the cameras; the episode was aired after his death.

Current Talk '13 II / "The Julia Hoffman Show"
« on: September 11, 2013, 03:40:54 PM »
Some wag on Youtube has stitched together various scenes of Grayson's characters having meltdowns... mostly Julia, but I spotted at least one Magda scene and another of Aunt Julia Collins from PT 1841:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmfVofgcYT0

It's mostly Grayson screaming, wailing, and ululating, so if you live with people who are sensitive to unexpected or jarring noise, best to listen with headphones.  You have been warned.

Calendar Events / Announcements '13 II / Semi OT: article about BTVS

The topic of this article is "Buffy, the vampire slayer" (WARNING: spoilers for early seasons) but I think some of the general thoughts could be applied to why we love DS so much...

Calendar Events / Announcements '13 II / The Dark Shadows Music Book
« on: August 20, 2013, 03:58:33 AM »
While in the big comics and memorabilia shop I mentioned in my post in the comic book thread last Saturday, I also happened upon a reasonably priced copy of the DS Music Book, and I did bring that home with me.  I don't own a piano although I think there is an app for Mac that could enable me to play at least some of the selections in the book (this may be for the iPad rather than the Macbook).  The main selling point for most fans would be the rare photographs.  I would imagine that nearly all, if not all of these have been reprinted again in other PomPress books since the volume's original publication in 1996.

The book is an enjoyable bagatelle to own if you are into collecting more unusual mementi from the series.  The most fascinating image to me was a photograph of the cover of the actual "Ode to Angelique" sheet music used on the series during the PT 1970 storyline.  The sheet music cover included a photo of composer Bruno Hess.  I laughed thinking how much PT Quentin must have *loved* having that around the house.

Calendar Events / Announcements '13 II / Matthew Hall video interview
« on: July 30, 2013, 09:10:09 PM »
I would guess this video was done sometime in the 1990s.  Matthew Hall discusses his personal connection to DS and his experience working on the 1990/91 series.  This is one of the few occurrences of which I am aware in which someone close to the show has actually described Dan Curtis as "the head writer" of the series.  I still think DS (the original series) was so good *in spite of* Dan's input... people who are really close to a project often take a different view from those who are spectators--or have a more objective vantage point:
