Calendar Events / Announcements '16 II / June 27: Shirley Jackson Day
« on: June 24, 2016, 01:46:24 PM »
Fans,

This is an interesting article with several implicit DS connections.  DS made use of plot elements from both "The Lottery" (in the final PT1841 storyline) and the original novel (and film adaptation) THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE.  I never knew that June 27th was the date Jackson gave for the titular lottery in her short story.  That's really rather uncanny.  The 68th anniversary of the publication of "The Lottery" is Sunday June 26.

Reading my weekly issue of the DigBoston paper over lunch today, I was surprised to see Bella Heathcote mentioned in a villainous role in the new film by the latest hot auteur, Nicholas Winding Refn, The Neon Demon:

https://digboston.com/staring-contest/

Bella is featured in this video showcasing the director and some of the stars, including Christina Hendricks, alumna of the cult series Mad Men, a Sixties themed show which referenced DS in one episode.

Another DS related note about Refn is that reports were posted a month or so ago claiming he is planning a remake of Suspiria, the Dario Argento cult film which was Joan Bennett's last feature film.

Although this isn't directly DS related, this newish series about the Manson Family begins with episodes set in 1967. The themes include the Summer of Love, San Francisco hippies, and a lot of things we were hearing about when DS hit big.  The show also stars David Duchovny who I think has a following here.

I haven't watched the show, but my friend who wrote this review said it's available through the Flicks of Net.

Fans,

Thayer David's future wife, Valerie French, is featured in this 1959 B-movie thriller, THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE:

Valerie reminds me a little of Alexandra here.  Her marriage to Thayer happened around ten years after this picture was released. Legendary character actor Henry Daniell is also on hand in a minor supporting role.

Dear Fans,

A fan reported on the "Many Faces of Nancy Barrett" group on FaceBeast that Nancy's episodes of THE DOCTORS from 1971 have been playing on something called Retro TV--I presume this is one of the innumerable cable channels available in some markets.

I copied a screen shot of Nancy as a nurse (in a wig that is like a blonde version of the one Lisa Richards wore as 1970PT Sabrina) but am unable to find the utility to upload it to this post.  If one of the mods wants to advise me, I will post it here, or maybe somebody else will.

Fans,

This is an interesting what-if speculation--what if Dan Curtis had produced a 3rd DS feature film (as originally contracted by MGM) in the early 1970s?  The images crafted in the second post are particularly clever.

Fans, last year Grayson Hall's son Matt inaugurated Universe of Hall, an eBay shop to sell occasional items from his Mother's estate.  Grayson kept huge amounts of stuff and there's just too much for him to hold onto.  I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a tea service owned by her last year and it's become a cherished possession.  The plates and cups are a lovely bright yellow with a floral motif and they always make me think of Grayson's vibrant quality as a person and an actress who is my very favorite.

Matt just put up two more objects, both with a summer theme.  Make sure to read the descriptions Matt wrote for the items; he has an amazing ability to bring her to vivid life.  Among the photos of the hat, if you click through to the last one, there's an unusual hitherto unseen candid shot of Grayson at a party (year unknown; my completely untutored guess is circa 1980).

A fan has compiled highlights of Dennis Patrick's appearances in the Agnes Moorehead/ Michael Ansara Southern Gothic thriller, DEAR DEAD DELILAH:

In honor of April Fools day.  I actually read this when it originally came out.  It was in a small comic with a couple of other stories.

Fans,

Today a friend and I took a jaunt to Salem, Mass.  It was a brief trip but we stopped in Harrison's, a huge comic book store which is one of the very few in the area with a good selection of horror film fan mags available.  Anyhow, I was waiting for my friend to pay for his purchases and happened to see what I initially thought was a large Barnabas Collins action figure.  It turned out to be the Penguin from a TV series called Gotham which I think depicts the childhood life of Bruce Wayne.

I haven't seen the series (I think it was canceled sometime ago?), but the figure was tall, in a dark vaguely Edwardian looking suit, with dark pointy bangs and a face whose modeling sort of suggested Jonathan Frid.  In fact, he looked more like Frid than some of the official DS merchandise I have seen does.  He was holding an umbrella with the handle up and at first, I had to do a double-take because I thought I was seeing a wolf's-head cane!

It might have been just my imagination, but it made enough of an impression on me to write about it here.

Calendar Events / Announcements '16 I / Alec Newman in Dracula (2013)
« on: February 26, 2016, 05:28:05 AM »
Fans,

I finally found the DVD set for the Jonathan Rhys Meyers DRACULA series which aired on NBC in 2013-14.  The set includes several deleted scenes from various episodes.  I was surprised to see one between JRM and Alec Newman from Alec's episode; I think the title of it was "From Darkness to Light."

The scene lasts around 3 minutes and is pretty intense between the two.  Alec played a warrior from Vlad Tepes's court who had become a vampire and come to London to serve his former liege.  There is a kind of hypermale energy between the two that has some slashy overtones.  Because it aired on NBC, however, it's just suggested, nothing more.

I checked YT and I don't see any of this posted there.  I am thrilled to have the discs.  I found them on Amazon priced at $7.99 last week.

Calendar Events / Announcements '16 I / New Strange Paradise Blog
« on: February 17, 2016, 03:34:39 AM »
Fans,

My dear friend Curt Ladnier has started a new blog for the 1969-70 cult series STRANGE PARADISE, often described as "Canada's answer to DARK SHADOWS."  It was actually the brainchild of Steve Krantz in New York, and was an early attempt at a series produced in Canada and aimed at US/Canadian syndication markets--a phenomenon that was to become very widespread in the 1990s, but this forerunner didn't do so well.

One of the most amusing entries is this one, in which Curt presents some very rarely seen materials documenting an unsuccessful attempt to market the series in the 1980s with an Elvira-styled hostess, "Dracena Morg."  The luridly colored photo of her is a real hoot.

Fans,

If I recall correctly, Glenn Barr has painted Grayson Hall at least a couple of times in her role of Pepe in SATAN IN HIGH HEELS. A friend of mine who follows Barr's work sent me this link earlier today.  WARNING if you scroll down beyond the portrait of Nancy, there's a painting of a topless woman:

http://innerstategallery.com/glenn-barr-hidden-persuasion/

The painting entitled Carolyn looks just like Nancy in the role in 1966 to me.

Other subjects include Sharon Tate (not so identified but it looks just like her to me, from VALLEY OF THE DOLLS) and two Moon women from the British cult sci fi series, UFO.

Calendar Events / Announcements '15 II / Jonathan Frid's favorite librarian
« on: December 06, 2015, 03:29:34 PM »
Interesting article.  I think it must have been written sometime in the latter half of 2012.

I wonder whether the Librarian realized how much a fan collector would have paid to have had a set of the Encyclopedia Britannica with Frid's post-it notes inside.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/talk/paul-wilson-famous-hamilton-vampire-remembers-local-librarian-from-the-grave-1.1285535

The article is awash in the usual generalizations and snide comments from people who really don't know anything about DARK SHADOWS or Frid's acting career.

Fans,

Kathryn Leigh Scott (TLATKLS) announced on her Facebook page yesterday (or maybe it was the day before) that she is offering two of her books in a special holiday package.  Unusually, KLS is also throwing in a one minute phone call to each purchaser to wish the individual a happy holiday.

The offer ends on Jan. 1, 2016.
