And how about Sheriff Paterson?  Forgive me...I don't remember his name.

Oddly enough, his name is ... Sheriff.  At one point you see his grave stone and it reads "Sheriff Davenport". This seems a rather strange and unnecessary (and hilarious) error in the show. Unless, of course, his name was supposed to be Sheriff.

I always imagined someone working for the show ordered the prop and the producers of the show see that it says "Sheriff Patterson". Then they think to themselves ... "Hmm. We really should order a new one with a real name. Eh. let's use it anyway."

one of them is literally called "boycott dark shadows movie".

i can't recall the specific titles of the other. sorry.

Weird group... Why do they hate it so much? Are they fans of the original series who just hate Tim Burton?

i suppose at this point nothing should surprise me but there are a couple FB "boycott" and hate groups that have gleefully reproted every negative review and disappointing box office report as some sort of validation or vindication of their position on the film...despite the fact none of them have actually, you know, seen it.

Link?

I guess one answer to my post might be that people are hoping for a sequel. If it's Tim Burton, I don't think I'd be crazy about a sequel. I'm more hoping for someone to eventually make a real, better version of the movie. Similar to how the original Batman looks like a big joke when compared to Dark Knight. The original Batman was OK but Burton clearly didn't do it "right".

I'm wondering why there appears to be a preoccupation here with commercial success of the movie. There seems to be a lot of defending/rationalizing the fact that the movie hasn't been a wild success to this point. Even if the movie were a ridiculous flop (not saying it is), that doesn't affect whether the original was worthwhile and doesn't reflect negatively on fans of the original show in any way. I like the movie for the most part and intend to watch it many more times but it's no surprise to me, knowing what I know about Tim Burton and recognizing that the promotional campaign was rather ill-advised (I don't know anyone - fan of the original show or not - who, after seeing the trailer, expected the movie to be good), that the movie hasn't been a raging success.

Let's face it, when you tell people your favorite show is Dark Shadows, you're already exposing yourself as somewhat unusual. Now, after the movie, the reason for that perception may be somewhat different, but I don't quite see why being a fan of the original show necessitates being an apologist for the movie or arguing that it is/should be a commercial success.

Current Talk '12 I / What band does the various Blue Whale songs?
« on: May 13, 2012, 09:07:57 PM »
I rather like some of those songs, although it is odd to me that the customers there don't get annoyed that a total of MAYBE 5 songs have ever played in their bar. Anyways, it kinds of sounds like The Tornados but I'm pretty sure it's not them - anybody know?

I laughed really hard at the part where Barnabas opened a secret door and Elizabeth said "that's where I keep my macrame". I laughed until I almost cried envisioning that scene occurring in the original series. LOL...

Yes, it is rather ridiculous. Why would he have her stay at Collinwood? Why not with him or other relatives?

"Here, sweetie - my buddies Dr Hoffman and Barnabas Collins (who I'm like 95% sure is a vampire) have a hookup on this creepy old house I know for a fact was haunted in the recent past. Want to stay there?"

Current Talk '10 II / Re: Lamar Trask's motivation?
« on: November 18, 2010, 07:51:35 PM »
In part, I think Lamar was too pig-headed and fanatical to ever even consider that he might have made a mistake.  In a broader sense though, I think that by this point, he had developed a grudge against the Collins family as a whole because of their association to Barnabas, who killed his father.  An injury to Quentin would indirectly be a strike back at Barnabas, so it may not have mattered to Lamar if Quentin was really innocent.
I can buy that, but why
didn't he at least go after Gerard as well?
Yes but I think the original Rev Trask really believed what he was doing was right. Gregory and Lamar seemed far more willing to compromise their ethics.

Current Talk '10 II / Lamar Trask's motivation?
« on: November 17, 2010, 10:48:30 PM »
I was watching the episode from 1840 where Daphne and Gerard got married and noticed something strange about the scene where Quentin arrives right after they married and Trask holds him at gunpoint to return him to the police. During that scene, Daphne clearly comes out of a trance and doesn't remember what happened to her and Gerard doesn't even bother to deny it when Quentin states that she was obviously under a spell, cast by Gerard. Trask hears all of this and is completely unphased and seems to have no problem with the fact that Quentin is innocent and he's been helping the true warlock all along. I thought Trask was only persecuting Quentin because he truly believed he was a warlock-- apparently not. So, what was his motivation? Is he part of the whole underground warlock conspiracy??? haha

i'll throw another log on this fire...

in episode 463 after tony peterson follows carolyn to the old house and spys her with barnabas when he confronts her he refers to her as being "in that old man's arms".

i don't think he'd refer to a 25 year old as an "old man".

i think this was a major continuity gaffe on the part of the writers having barnabas "young" in 1795 and middle aged in the present since,as has been noted, vampires do not age.

Spoiler alert would be nice. I've never seen that episode and didn't even know "1795" had anything to do with anything. Oh well . . . Just thought I'd point that out since it seems every one is so hard up about it at randomly selected times.

Answer to the question: It would have made a huge difference. If the character could remain the same but magically be about 15 years younger, that would be excellent.

I agree the mods are great-- as long as you don't mind getting called out for failing to say "spoiler" regarding basic facts about the show (look out! better use the spoiler feature if you ever talk about Barnabas Collins being a vampire!!!!), and having your curing abilities permanently taken away (without warning, or any notification at all for that matter) because you cured 3 people in a row while you simultaneously get nailed with a bunch of cures for announcing that
Burke Devlin never returns to the show
to a group of people who probably already knew that.

Anyways-- Merry Christmas to the entire board!

Keep up the great work mods!  [santa_thumb]

Current Talk '09 I / Re: Whatever Happened to Burke Devlin?
« on: August 03, 2009, 06:24:29 PM »
I didn't dislike Anthony George, I thought he did a great job as Jeremiah. And as both Jeremiah and Burke he had some great scenes with Jonathan Frid. However, Mitch Ryan will always hold a special
place for me as the ultimate Burke Devlin.

With George gone, they could have recasted Burke again, but chose not to. Probably because they
hooked Vicki up with another love interest. Once Vicki hooks up with
Peter/Jeff,
Burke is never mentioned again, almost like he never even existed, which I feel is a disservice to the character since
he played such an important part at the beginning of the show.

Ummm... Shouldn't someone be complaining that there's a massive spoiler in this post? I seem to remember certain people being very ... picky ... about this in the past.

Well, barely - only that DS: The Haunting of Collinwood DVD comes out September 15th.

What is DS: The Haunting of Collinwood DVD? I've never heard of this and can't find anything online about it
