Current Talk '03 II / Possible Origin Of The "Rip" In Time
« on: July 26, 2003, 01:15:04 AM »
Not to over-justify, but it may not have occurred to Quentin and Julia that the PT people can see into their time band the way they see into theirs (which, admittedly, would be rather short-sighted of them). During Barnabas' brief visit back to his own time band he made no mention of this fact when talking with Julia - he was too busy obsessing over and blathering about PT Maggie. ::)

It also seems odd that PT people do not stumble into RT.  I can just see Hoffman in the kitchen washing dishes when Mrs. Johnson ask her what she is doing.  Hoffman looks at Mrs. Johnson and says who the heck are you?  It seems that only RT people can move back and forth and PT people are stuck in their own time band.

I suspect the "rip" or vortex in the time band was caused by PT Angelique practicing her black arts in that room (since the room in unused in RT). Or it may have been a side effect of whatever Stokes did in PT to bring Angelique back to life if no one had ever noticed the phenomenon before, which we assume is the case since the room had been occupied for years in PT. It may be a one-way only door for those in RT to enter and exit.

Current Talk '02 II / OVERHEARD in Collinsport, Maine
« on: October 03, 2002, 08:45:56 PM »
The following is a short list of words and phrases used regularly by the good people of Collinsport, Maine. However, common as they are in Collinwood, how often in your own lifetime would you ever have the opportunity or occasion to use them yourself?

1. "Open the coffin."

2. "He's in that other time now."

3. "But . . . you're dead!"

4. "It must have been some kind of wild animal."

5. "We must find her and destroy her."

6. "The body . . . it's gone!"

Please add to this list other expressions common only to the townsfolk in Dark Shadows.

Current Talk '02 II / Sights Unseen
« on: September 27, 2002, 09:20:03 PM »
Notice how cleverly the camera followed Barnabas and Ben Stokes right off the edge of the set of the Collinwood foyer, keeping the lights around them dark, as they walked to the "door" leading to the "study." This is one of a few times when we see someone do that, despite the fact that there seems to be no connecting set between the two locations. Usually when one of the characters goes to the study, we see them walk out of camera range, downstage left, and sometimes downstage right.

Have you ever imagined what those missing parts of the sets might look like? The other side of the Collinwood foyer, for instance; what one might see looking straight ahead if they were walking down the staircase. I've always pictured an enormous hallway leading off to the study, perhaps a library, and who knows what else.

And what of the other side of the Old House drawing room? Or the other side of Maggie's cottage? What do you suppose they might look like?

Current Talk '02 II / Biggest Pet Peeves
« on: September 12, 2002, 10:09:15 PM »
What are some of your biggest Pet Peeves concerning Dark Shadows? I'm not talking about broader areas like weak writing, bad acting or crummy story lines, but the little things that really gnaw at you.

For me it's when they keep changing the 1795 dates. Vicki goes to 1795, lives thru the beginning of 1796, yet dates of deaths and other incidents we saw happen in 1796 are referred to as happening in 1795, and then later, in 1797!

The other thing that drives me nuts is when people in Collinwood hear a car pull up to the front of the house, and they look out the back window (in the drawing room) to see who it is. Hello! How can they see the front of the house by looking out the back of the house? GRRRR!!!!!

What little things like that drive you nuts?

Current Talk '02 II / She's a cocktail waitress at a Goth Bar
« on: August 23, 2002, 11:08:11 PM »
When Roger discovered Eve with Jeff and asked to be introduced, it reminded me . . .

Did you ever wonder who Eve was . . . BEFORE she was Eve? Not the spirit, or life force of Daniel Roget, but the BODY they used for "Eve?"

I'm assuming, of course, that unlike Adam, Eve was not stitched together from various body parts, but rather poor Willie could only be persuaded to unearth that one grave Joe caught him digging up. Thus, Julia used an entire, intact corpse to serve as the body of Eve (hence the lack of stitchery).

So who was this poor woman, buried in the shameless black dress? Judging by what she's wearing, I'd guess that Eve was a cocktail waitress at a Goth bar. Back in the 60's they didn't quite go so far with the make-up and piercings as they do today, you see, but the clothing style was already a staple of the sub culture.

I imagine her name was Gertrude, but people called her Gertie, or Gert, for short. She died from an infection she got getting her eyebrow pierced.

Who do you imagine The Body of Eve was before she was dug up? What was her name? Her profession? How did she die? ?!?

Current Talk '02 II / Uppers or Downers?
« on: August 07, 2002, 11:17:23 PM »
Dr. Julia Hoffman has arrived on the scene with her little black bag of goodies. Do you need an upper or a downer? Julia's got 'em all!

Like Barnabas, I feel in need of a stimulant today. Although I would usually profit from a good valium most of the time, today I just need a little pick me up.

What ails you? Julia's got the cure. What do you need Dr. Julia to give you today?

Current Talk '02 II / Nicholas Blair: Egomaniac or Idiot?
« on: July 15, 2002, 10:12:37 PM »
Why does Nicholas keep giving Angelique so many second chances? How many times has she promised to follow his orders, only to turn around and disobey him the moment his back is turned? It was a collossal mistake for Nicholas to bring Angelique back as a vampire - he should have left her "dead" after he removed her powers, let her age and die. It seems like he never learns his lesson.

Is it Nick's enormous ego that convinces him he can control her and that she poses no serious threat to him because he thinks of himself as being so vastly superior? Does he keep her around simply to continue feeding his ego with the power of that control? Or does Nick perhaps have few lustfull thoughts where Angelique is concerned? Does she have to be his slave in other ways??

In any case she is his downfall and if he were a tad more careful, or smarter, he would have dispensed with her. Why do you think he keeps her around?

Current Talk '02 II / How do you get your DS fix?
« on: July 06, 2002, 01:26:39 AM »
Do you watch Dark Shadows every day on the Sci Fi channel? And if you do, how do you get your fix on days like yesterday and today when it's pre-empted? If you are not currently watching the episodes on Sci Fi, and you feel that need for a quick DS fix, what particular tape/DVD/episode do you usually put on?

I tape the episodes every day on Sci Fi and watch them when I get home from work. Yesterday I needed that DS fix so I pulled out one of my tapes. I have the entire 1795 storyline on tape and watched the first episode where they have the seance and Victoria Winters travels back to the past (I love that episode and I've probably seen in dozens of times.)

How about you?

Current Talk '02 II / Julia's little black bag
« on: July 04, 2002, 03:54:26 AM »
Did anyone notice at the end of episode 547 (Tuesday on Sci Fi) when the aged Cassandra turned up at Collinwood, and Roger beckoned to Julia to help the old woman, Julia responded "My bag is in the drawing room" even though she had just entered the house with Barnabas?

So Julia leaves her bag laying around the house when she's not there? With all those drugs in it? Wow - David was probably experiencing the psychadelic 60's at a very early age!!! :o

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones Aunt Elizabeth gives you
don't do anything at all
Go ask Julia - when she's ten feet tall.

And if you go chasing vampires
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a pipe smoking Professor
Is giving you the call
Call Julia - when she was just small.

When men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some of Mrs. Johnson's mushrooms
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Julia - I think she'll know -
When logic and proportion have fallen floppy dead
And the gypsy is talking backwards
and Judah Zachary is off with his head
Remember what the Phoenix said . . .

Feed your head . . . feed your head . . .

Current Talk '02 II / Favorite/Lease Favorite Names on DS?
« on: July 04, 2002, 12:15:16 AM »
What is your favorite and least favorite name on Dark Shadows, for a boy or a girl?

My favorite male name is Quentin. My favorite female name is Josette - I think that's a very pretty name. I have a cousin name Joette but I think Josette is prettier. There's the added advantage that if the girl turns out to be a "tomboy" she can go by the nickname "Jo."

I think my least favorite male name is Bramwell - it always makes me think of a new cookie by Nabisco. "Try our new Bramwells." My lease favorite female name is Roxanne. The name sounds somehow lurid to me, I don't know why. (No offense to anyone named Roxanne!)

What are yours?

-Chris (who recently changed his posting name to Dr. Eric Lang because he thought Chris_2 was boring.)

Current Talk '02 I / Out of Character
« on: June 29, 2002, 05:01:12 AM »
The problem with Nicholas and his association with Maggie Evans is that in order for it to work Maggie is made to look quite stupid - either that or Julia Hoffman has been by lately with her medallion for another round of memory wiping!

Has Maggie already forgotten that Vicki stayed at her place because she was trying to avoid Cassandra - whom she revealed was actually Angelique? Even Maggie herself saw Angelique in Vicki's room. Maggie is well aware of what's going on at Collinwood thanks to Vicki, who herself blasted Nicholas the last time she saw him. Maggie knows about Cassandra, and she knows Nicholas claims to be her brother - she knows the score so why is she opening her door to this man with a big smile on her face as though he were the most harmless stranger in town??? :P

The other unlikely part here is David's inability to remember the message on the tape for Julia. He's heard it enough times by then to have it memorized regardless of whether he understood it or not. And what are the chances that a precocious kid that age is less adept at running a tape recorder than a witch who just arrived here from the 18th century? She knew about the fast-forward button before he did! :P

Sloppy, writers, sloppy! >:(

Current Talk '02 I / What a cheap shot
« on: June 20, 2002, 02:32:44 AM »
That tacky shot of Nicholas and Cassandra standing in front of the slide of Seaview Terrace was without question one of the cheapest, tackiest, cheesiest looking shots ever on this show! I guess it didn't phase them a bit to chromakey these two figures in front of their stock photo but how cheap looking was that?

This is the sort of thing I was used to seeing on those live-action Saturday morning shows like Electra Woman and Dyna Girl. Perhaps at the time they found the effect satisfactory rather than laughable.

What are your favorite cheap shots? My other favorite was the one where Amanda saw the big fake looking spider in "Hades."

Current Talk '02 I / Absence makes the memory go weak
« on: May 22, 2002, 01:23:57 AM »
Was David Collins at a mental institution while he was "away?" Or perhaps spending a little time with Julia and that medallion of hers?

How quickly David's family seems to have completely forgotten the reason for the seance only a few "weeks" ago. Prior to Vicki's trip to 1795 the household was in a state of panic over young David who claimed to see all sorts of things from coffins in basements to secret rooms in mausoleums to Sarah the ghost.

Did David - and his family - simply forget about David's morbid fear of Barnabas? Have they decided that the entire Sarah episode is over and done with, and not worth concerning themselves over any longer? What of the fact that Victoria, obstensibly David's governess, has learned that there is in fact a secret room the the mausoleum? I guess Vicki is so self-absorbed and obsessed with Peter/Jeff she hasn't bothered to consider that David was telling the truth about that room all along . . . and possibly about the rest of the things he saw as well!

Current Talk '02 I / No Good Dreams at Collinwood
« on: May 16, 2002, 12:19:02 AM »
As I'm sure everyone has noticed, whenever someone has a dream on Dark Shadows, it's always a nightmare. >:(

Didn't anyone ever have a good dream? A nice dream where something good happens? ;)

For instance, I can easily imagine Dr. Lang falling asleep and dreaming he's being awarded the Nobel Peace prize for his contribution to scientific achievement, and that his "creation" is fully alive and looks MAHVELOUS!

What kind of good dreams would other characters on this show have? Julia, for instance? Or Barnabas, or Willie?  :-*
