I had occasion to travel up to Westport, CT this week, and I saw a FOR SALE sign on the front lawn of the historic inn known for many years as the THREE BEARS RESTAURANT.

As viewers of HODS know, this was the movie's version of the Collinsport Inn, both interior and (in one scene that was deleted, IIRC) the exterior.

Over the years, DS fans in the area have trekked to this location and had (somewhat expensive, I guess!) meals.  The place always got good reviews from restaurant critics and diners.

The actual "Three Bears" name and logo came down in early 2009 (after nearly a century), and a restaurant called "Tiburon" took over the facility.  The family owners of TBR apparently had financial issues which even the restaurant's enduring popularity could not assuage.

However, the Tiburon also failed within a VERY few months.  The food apparently wasn't up to the TBR's standard for the prices.

And it seems nothing else has taken over at the old inn since.  I did not see any signs (of life) at the place, though the property appears to be maintained (grass cut, windows intact, and reasonably-fresh paint job.)

Here is an online listing.  $1.6M.  I hope SOMEONE buys it, as it IS of historic value.

This is an article I found when looking for other pictures.  The event actually took place during the 65th anniversary of the Normandy Invasion in June 2009.  A group of WW2 reenactors were also visiting when they encountered Betsy and her son at the site, along with surviving veterans.

Betsy's father, Lt. Col. Edwin Ostberg, had survived the Normandy invasion, but unfortunately was killed in another battle the following year, when his daughter was just three.  Betsy had gathered a lot of information on her Dad which she graciously shared with the reenactors.

Scroll down for a photo of Betsy with some of the group.

... Or, why something like DS would not have worked in Glasgow in 1954!

Police were called to the ginormous old Glasgow cemetery on the evening of September 23, 1954 to investigate an invasion of children in and about the place.  Expecting to find the tykes engaged in "normal" vandalism and pranks, they found instead a ragtag force of 100 or more youths, armed with knives and sharp sticks, questing against a rumored vampire infestation responsible for the alleged murders of two children.  Which deaths apparently never really happened!  Even so, the kids continued to "patrol" the cemetery for some time.

American horror comic books were blamed, and censorship laws were enacted to protect minors from "disturbing" content, though it is now believed that local, even parentally-related legends of Scottish origin may have contributed to the children's hysterical behavior.  And now they've made a documentary.

Tonight when driving I listened to this syndicated program called FLASHBACK on a major radio channel, which does themed segments usually based on a year (though tonight they featured songs with colors too.)

Anyway, the featured year was 1970, so the programmers sought out sound clips from that year that specifically mentioned "1970."  They came up with some dialogue from the 1840 storyline between Angelique and Julia, wherein the former discovers the latter is, of course, visiting from 1970.

Indeed, they played several minutes from this particular scene, because they used the term "1970" several times and Barnabas was mentioned as living in 1970.  (A subtle hint for folks who might not realize that the original show has survived all these years.)

Then the announcer mentioned the release that year of the film JOE, which of course co-starred Dennis Patrick.  I got all warm and fuzzy thinking about all this. (Which is nice because after all the rain it got bitter cold.)[snow_wink]

Given that the general death-tinged themes of DS, and the long storylines set in the 19th century, derived from classic horror/gothic works, I thought this link about Victorian-era mourning customs and surviving souvenirs might interest many of you.

Someone just turned me on to this site--- I could spend hours looking at this stuff.

Be sure to check out the pictures of the various traveling exhibitions.

I have often thought a segment on this subject would make an interesting (and educational) addition to the usual Fest presentations, but I don't have much practical knowledge, or the resources for a good collection of antique mourning items.

... Well, a dream of his fans, anyway.  This coming Sunday, October 11, a couple of days after the 160th anniversary of his death and first burial, and culminating this year of his 200th birthday, the Poe House and Museum in Baltimore, MD, will be reinacting the kind of funeral Edgar Allan Poe deserved, not the shoddy, shameful, obscure affair the original was.  Actors will be portraying various contemporaries and friends of Poe's, and even his real-life nemesis Rufus Griswold. Actor John Astin, who of course played "Gomez" on THE ADDAMS FAMILY, and more lately has toured with a one-man-show of himself playing EAP, will emcee.  The festivities, err, obsequies, will feature a realistic replica of Poe in his coffin.
Unfortunately, found out about this too late, as advance tickets have sold out, but no doubt people will be posting pictures somewhere.

Read more about the event, and see more pictures, here:

Who needs global warming, nukes, and pandemics to finish off our species, when the vampires of legend could have done the job within 2 years, over 400 years ago--- IF they had existed?

Oh, to be blinded by science--- a couple of physicists took the time off from their hectic schedules to calculate how a few bloodsucking fiends could have theoretically knocked off half a billion humans in 2 years in the exponential manner of an old Wella shampoo commercial, to quote the article, "He bites two friends, who bite two friends, and so on, and so on…"

(Of course they don't take into account that some fictional vampires didn't automatically kill ALL their victims, nor needed to.)

Is this for real?   Here's the story....

Having been out of work for several months, I look at any listing for which I am even remotely qualified.  I found an ad for what would have been a perfectly-situated job for a DS fan--- Part-time front desk clerk at the historic Griswold Inn, , aka the "Collinsport Inn", in beautiful downtown Essex, aka, "the rest of Collinsport".  However, it's well beyond even the expanded commuting area I would be able to handle, about 20 miles at least.  Darn it!
If anyone nearer by wishes to go for it, good luck.

This fellow who collects antique photos of Halloweens past is posting one per day for the month of October:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/opiummuseum/sets/72157607495777601/

Many of them are nicely atmospheric simply by virtue of being B&W or sepia-toned, but some are deliciously creepy.  Represented, among other traditional holiday costumes, mostly home-made but also a few early commercially-produced, are pumpkins, witches, ghosts, and even Felix the cat.

Enjoy!

The distinguished stage, film, and TV actress died on October 8.  This is a long and very detailed obituary, and yes, Louis IS mentioned, down towards the end...

For the never-to-be-written DS Mysterious Aztec storyline  [ghost_wink]....  Beautiful, authentic reproductions make fascinating and sometimes creepy whistles, wails, and even BARKS--- Give a listen while it's still available!

The video is co-ordinated so that each whistle is shown while its sound is played.

... So I guess those who already sent their SASE's have or will soon be receiving them... However, there are no new forms on the official website as yet (Monday, May 14.)

The only  guests listed so far are Mr. Frid, Lara Parker, Kathryn Leigh Scott, and Marie Wallace, with others "to be announced."  Goodness, I certainly HOPE John Karlen can come-- it wouldn't seem right to commemorate JF's 40th DS anniversary without him, and I don't know when they saw each other last.... It would be VERY nice (and probably a bit teary for some of us) if they were reunited for the occasion.  Heck, if that happens, I'm bringing a whole box of Kleenex (or suitable generic substitute)!!!

Oh, well, whatever...  I know everyone wants to see the $$$ breakdown.  No real surprises here:

"Celebration Rate" (Friday August 17, Saturday Aug. 18)   $ 30  p/ Adult
"Celebration Rate" Friday (6 PM-- Midnight)  $ 15  p/ Adult
"Celebration Rate" Saturday (11 AM-- 7 PM)  $ 20 p/ Adult
Banquet with the Stars (Saturday,  7 PM-- 10 PM)  $ 60  p/ person
Lyndhurst Trip (Friday, 11 AM-- 4 PM)  $ 20 p/ person (includes shuttle transportation & admission to grounds & mansion)

Children ages 6--12, half price

"Above Festival membership payment must be received by mail by August 10, thereafter at the door only.  Please include 2 self-addressed, stamped envelopes with payment. (etc.)  Please include aname and address of each person for whom you are paying. (etc.)"   (You probably know the rest.)

(P.S., D.F. reminds you that postage is now 41 cents, as of today.  Grrrrrrrrr.....)

The rest is the usual list of DS products.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.... Hoping to see as many of you all there as can come, in spite of some of the reduced con-time.

Calendar Events / Announcements '06 II / Real-Life Mask of Judah Zachary?

...Or just a new spin on an old story?   YOU decide!!!

Rocky Mountain Ghost Hunters Alliance: The Mask

IMO, of course, it certainly could be, well, not exactly what it's cracked up to be, but I don't live there, so who knows?  [scratch2]

Tomorrow night, the Ridgefield (Conn.) Playhouse will be screening "Our Fathers", Dan Curtis's last film, with a Q&A to follow with one of the stars, Brain Dennehy.  There was a nice article about this in the local paper, which gave a paragraph to Dan Curtis, and adding that both he and Dennehy were Bridgeport boys.  Here is the link:

http://www.connpost.com/theatre/ci_4512117

Here is the Ridgefield Playhouse website:

http://www.ridgefieldplayhouse.com/default.asp

Since I only found out about this tonight, it seems doubtful that I will be going--- too soon after geting out of work with little time to eat, etc.--- besides which I'd have to follow a new set of directions PDQ in the dark. (Why oh why couldn't this be on SATURDAY when one has TIME to get lost and find the way in the nick of time?)  I used to be familiar with that area, but they've built it up so much and threw in so many new roads, lights, identical mini-malls, etc. in the last 20 years, well, it's a challenge.

Even if I cannot go, hopefully the paper's film critic (who worte the article) will attend and post something on his blog.  I will be looking for it.

This has been brought to my attention--- if it's not the real deal somebody let us know...

http://www.rockinghamavenue.com/

I just love the slideshow so much, could watch and listen to it for hours, as it all just gives me a peaceful feeling.  However, sadly, I will never have the $6,795,000 to fulfill my California dreamin'.  8)
