Calendar Events / Announcements '10 II / Kate Jackson memoir
« on: August 04, 2010, 07:18:04 PM »
Today's Los Angeles Times includes a report that Kate Jackson is penning her memoirs. It is expected to be released next year by Galley Books.  [ghost_smiley]

I hope that she remembers to include a fair amount on how she got her start in TV.  [ghost_wink]

Calendar Events / Announcements '10 I / Thomas Pynchon and DS
« on: January 07, 2010, 11:27:22 PM »
I don't think this has been mentioned here yet. Apologies if it has. I could not get the "search" function to work for me.

Thomas Pynchon's newest novel "Inherent Vice" mentions Dark Shadows on page 128. This book is set in LA around 1969, and is full of 60's references, especially TV. The main characters all seem to be, in Pynchon's words, "dopers" who watch a lot of television.

In the paragraph, the narrator tells us that they are watching Dark Shadows and it is "around the point in the Collins family saga when the story line had begun to get heavily into something called "parallel time," which was confounding the viewing audience nationwide, even those who remained with their wits about them, although many dopers found no problem at all in following it. It seemed basically to mean that the same actors were playing two different roles, but if you'd gotten absorbed enough, you tended to forget that these people were actors."

Pynchon either has great researchers or he was a fan.  [snow_cheesy]

Current Talk '09 II / TV show 'Bones' last week
« on: November 24, 2009, 09:28:40 PM »
Did anyone see 'Bones' last week? I just watched my DVR of the show and I swear I heard Ralph Waite as Booth's grandfather tell Booth that he had been trying to get in touch with his old army buddy--Willie Loomis!  [hall2_cheesy]

Could the writer of the episode have been one of THOSE kids who ran home, or just a coincidence? Whatever, it's always pleasant to hear ANYTHING that brings to mind DS.  [clap2]

Calendar Events / Announcements '08 I / Burbank Airport Marriott
« on: June 26, 2008, 10:34:57 PM »
Hi all,

Living here in SoCal I decided to take a drive out to the Fest Hotel for this year, the Burbank Airport Marriott, just to look around and acquaint myself with the neighborhood. I'm glad I did because there are some major things going on there right now.

First of all, for those who are driving, there is MAJOR construction going on at the hotel, and the entrance, which is listed as being on Hollywood Way, is closed. You have to drive around the corner to Thornton Ave and enter the parking area. There are plenty of signs once you drive in, and the parking lot is pretty big, but you will probably have to slog your bags quite a way to get to the registration desk--which is a temporary small desk just inside the building. The lobby itself is for the most part closed, and there is a path you have to follow to get through the construction to the elevators, pool, restaurant, etc. I have no clue where the Fest will be held. They have a separate convention center as well as meeting rooms. The lady at the registration desk said that the lobby should be open by the end of July, so don't know what will be the situation for the Fest. This is not good news for those who have the habit of sitting around in the lobby waiting to greet old friends.

There is only one restaurant in the hotel--the Daily Grill (a national chain). My companion and I had lunch there today and it was quite good. There is also a small area to get coffee and pastries, located right near the restaurant.

The area around the airport is mostly residential, but located at the corner of Thornton and Hollywood Way, across from both the airport and the hotel is a mini-mall where I saw a McDonalds and a few other fast food places. There may be other restaurants there too. I didn't notice.

There were two different, and very obvious, airport shuttle waiting areas, which look to be convenient for those of you who are flying into Burbank (Bob Hope) Airport.

I hope this info is of help to my fellow Fest goers. See you in a few weeks!   [ghost_smiley]

According to next week's TV Guide, the Sundance Channel will be showing Grayson's French movie, which they list as "Where are you, Polly Maggoo?" It is listed for Sept. 1 from 8:00PM to 10:00 PM.

This is very interesting, because I'm not aware that this movie has ever been shown on American television. I'm sure J99 and Gothick will correct me if I'm wrong. :-*

Current Talk '06 II / Dark Shadows on Ice
« on: November 01, 2006, 01:45:32 AM »
Just saw a special on the Style Network called "Halloween on Ice." Low and behold,  Canadian Ice Dancer Shae Lynn Bourne skated a number to a funky Mannheim Steamroller version of the Dark Shadows theme.  [hall2_cheesy]

The group was present on the ice, playing in person and there was a large screen showing a couple of eyes which looked very much like the eyes of a certain vampire. Shae Lynn herself was dressed as a sexy black cat although she also had something of the look of Elvira.  I had heard on my Skatefans list that she would be doing a number called "Dark Shadows" but did not really expect it to be OUR Dark Shadows.   [hall_shocked] It was really fun to see.

Calendar Events / Announcements '06 I / Night of the Iguana on DVD
« on: April 30, 2006, 05:50:33 AM »
Got my copy in the mail today from Warner Home Video. It contains the vintage feature "On the Trail of the Iguana" as well as a new feature on John Huston and a couple of theatrical trailers. No mention is made of Grayson in either of these features.  [kaiokn] You'd think they could at least have mentioned her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.  :'(

Still, I'm glad to finally have this fine movie available on DVD.

Calendar Events / Announcements '04 II / Return to Collinwood DVD
« on: November 03, 2004, 02:41:41 AM »
Maybe I'm having one of my much more frequent "senior" moments, but I do not recall hearing about this before.

I am a member of the DS DVD club and just received an e-mail from them, offering discounts on MPI products if I continue my membership. One of the items mentioned is a "making of Return to Collinwood DVD." I get the impression that this is not yet available, but will be coming out in the future.

Something to watch for.  :D

Calendar Events / Announcements '04 II / More on Pennock in Hamlet
« on: July 10, 2004, 09:46:32 PM »
LA Weekly wrote an article about the disastrous production of Hamlet  that Chris Pennock was involved in early this year. And Chris himself provided the cartoons which accompany the article.

Try this link:

If this doesn't work, go to laweekly.com and search for "Hamlet."

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 II / OT-Skip Ward has died
« on: August 05, 2003, 05:55:46 PM »
And just who is Skip Ward, anyway? ??? Well, you Grayson fans and movie buffs will recognize Skip Ward as the hunk who played the bus driver in Night of the Iguana (and got a bigger billing than Grayson.)

According to Daily Variety he passed away at the age of 69 on June 27, 2003 after a long illness. It seems he had mostly gotten out of acting and had been an associate producer of TV shows, including "The Dukes of Hazzard."

With his passing I can think of only two NOTI actors who are still with us--Sue Lyon and Deborah Kerr.

On a slightly related topic, on the latest DS DVD Roger Davis mentions being a good friend of Hampton Fancher III. He was Sue Lyons boyfriend and  accompanied  her on the shoot of NOTI. Grayson,  Burton and others supposedly got pissed at these two for constantly making out during filming.

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 I / Barny Bobblehead has arrived!
« on: June 17, 2003, 05:55:07 AM »
I joined the Dark Shadows DVD club and received DVD #6 and my Barny Bobblehead today, and I have to say that I am impressed with the  Bobblehead. He is larger and  more substantial than I thought he'd be. And he towers over my Clayguy Julia. I can even make out the wolf's head on his cane.   Now, where is my Julia Bobblehead, MPI?
