Current Talk '13 II / DS and Old Movie Tie Ins
« on: October 09, 2013, 04:49:36 PM »
Just tuned into Phone Call from a Stranger. Gary Merrill buys a one way ticket at a train station and gives his name as Collins. The camera zooms to the brief case he's carrying and the name on it is Trask!!!

Current Talk '13 II / Depp's Dark Shadows
« on: September 06, 2013, 08:36:25 PM »
Watching Depp’s interpretation of DS. Although I find this film amusing, I must say that it stinks. I am discouraged and disappointed that The Forum has taken such a liking to this thing. I am also saddened to see that the Forum has been dedicated to this film to the point that it hails over all the original show. I was not surprised that Mr. Depp and Mr. Burton came out with such a nut-case story, for that is the norm for them. I have been a member of the Forum for several years. I have found it amusing and a most informative site. I’ve even made friends here over the years. I want to know, Moderator, what in God’s name you find so great about this film???

Calendar Events / Announcements '13 I / TCM Essentials John Karlen
« on: January 12, 2013, 12:04:38 AM »
I made a suggestion on the TCM boards that John Karlen ought to be a guest speaker on Turner Classic Movies Essentials night. And why not? He is a huge fan of old movies, his fave star being Chester Morris.

Calendar Events / Announcements '12 I / KARLENZINE VI
« on: May 05, 2012, 10:23:29 PM »
KarlenZine VI is here!
>
> Hey, everyone! After much toil and hardship (yeah, right—well, much toil at least), I've finally gotten this volume together. Size-wise, it's about the same as the last three. It contains the last of the Gina Lee series by the late N.J. Nidiffer and two stories in a new series that she wrote back in 2000 and 2004, to which I've added one of my own. Cherie Groves and Janet Carlson have provided some of their terrific artwork and a couple stories each. Besides a lot of stories, there are poems by E. DeJesus and Cherie.
> Most of the writing in the zine was done back before KZ V was published, and the plan to publish them at the same time just didn't happen because of the high volume. It's taken me several years to get back the interest, then make the push to finish. In doing so, I found my writing voice again. (And I have to thank both Cherie and Janet for their contribution to my inspiration returning.)
> As in a lot of things, timing can be weird, and the day before taking the master to the printer, I heard about Jonathan Frid's passing. It took me all day to absorb this, and the sadness I've felt ever since has dampened my joy/relief over finishing this project. Nonetheless, it's done and I hope for those of you who buy it, there will be many hours of enjoyment.
> KarlenZine VI
> $28 postage included.
> Checkout my website (Willie Loomis Tribute Page ) for other details and a peak at the cover. Please email me off list for details about ordering.
> ——————
> Also, I'm starting work on getting my DS universe sequel ready for printing, though it will be a while as the fund is currently empty from paying to have KZ VI printed. It's long (238,400 words), so it's going to be another big book. It ties in all the stories I've written that are related to each other, i.e. Summer's Son, "Long Winter....", "Spring", etc. There will be a list of included stories in the book and where they may be found.
> Summer picks up at the end of "Spring" (how predictable!) and takes Willie on an emotional and difficult journey both inside himself and across the country, where he discovers his roots and finds out what is most important to him.
> All my DS universe loose ends and some of the show's are tied up in this book, and I hope it will be a satisfying conclusion to the series. I need to gauge interest to help me figure out how many to print when the time comes. I'm sure the price will be mid-20s, but that will depend on print run.
> Please email me off list if you are interested in buying one of these when they're ready, so I can get a rough idea of the quantity I need. Thanks!

I just finished re-reading Dreamcatcher. He’s got a lot of DS names in that one:
Trask, Devlin, Josette, Briscoe…

Has anyone ever seen him at a DS Fest?

Current Talk '11 II / Collinsport in Central MA?
« on: July 01, 2011, 12:58:54 PM »
In a thread a while back, I mentioned a couple of buildings in Holden, Ma that reminded me of a hunk of Collinsport, although we are way inland.

The first is The Blue Plate. It's a local establishment that I would not be surprised to see Sam Evans come out of. Besides beer, wine and mixed drinks, the Blue Plate offers up chips and pickled eggs. It's actually a pretty cool place. Been around for years and presents local talent - uh, local bands.

The second is Rose Cottage, a few doors down from the Plate. It's a salon, believe it or not. Don't know if the folks who own it are DS fans, but it caught my eye on the way to work one day.

Airing 9:30 A.M. EST on TCM.
This is a nifty little B picture from Universal. 1944. A favorite of mine. Haven't seen it on TV in years. Tune in. You won't be disappointed.

Leonard Maltin:
D: Robert Siodmak. Ella Raines, Franchot Tone, Alan Curtis, Thomas Gomez, Elisha Cook, Jr., Fay Helm, Andrew Tombes, Regis Toomey. First-rate suspense yarn of innocent man (Curtis) framed for murder of his wife. Secretary Raines seeks real killer with help of Curtis' best friend (Tone) and detective (Gomez). Sexual innuendo in drumming scene with Cook is simply astonishing--the solo was reportedly dubbed by Buddy Rich. Based on a Cornell Woolrich novel; screenplay by Bernard C.
