Current Talk '17 II / Need Help Finding Barnabas Photos!
« on: August 13, 2017, 10:31:27 PM »
Hey, everybody, I could use some help for a project I've been planning for a long time on which I am currently working.  I am going through a bunch of old pictures making a wall project about my family and our favorite things and will include some movies and TV shows.  Some I have had no problem finding a good clear image of a cast photo or particular scene which can be printed.  Prefer color but if black-and-white is too stark I can make it sepia, but I have had particular problems with Dark Shadows.

A really stunning picture of Jonathan Frid as Barnabas is essential!  He was my main and first love so it must be as perfect as possible.  Trouble is, most stills are either too campy, in black-and-white, or both.  Most screen captures, although they give more of a feel of the series, are way too blurry and indistinct to make for good prints.  Also, I don't know why but I've noticed this problem with Jonathan.  Although he had the most beautiful eyes, many pictures have him with eyes closed or near-closed, looking down, eyes or some other part of the face in shadow, or face in profile--none of which I want.  I don't know whether this is because Jonathan being tall was used to looking down, the way the set was lit, Jonathan was trying to be dramatic rather than hammy by looking up too much, or what.  Anyhow, I'll post some examples of what I found and how it compares to what I want and maybe someone can help me.  Thanks.

Something like this would be totally awesome if it were in color:

Current Talk '12 I / Who Was Your First True Love?
« on: March 18, 2012, 09:42:18 AM »
Who was your first true love?  Mine was Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins in Dark Shadows.  (My one sister's was Quentin Collins and my other's was Chris Jennings so we kept it all in the family.)  Jonathan brought style and class to creating this role, and he had an odd natural beauty (from some angles resembling the most beautiful man of all time, Buster Keaton--who Johnny Depp did a better job of imitating than Barnabas.)  No one could hold a candle to the wonderfully talented Jonathan, not Ben Cross, who thought much of himself and little of the role, to the point of holding it in contempt--a fatal quality for any actor, particularly the lead--not what's his name from 2004, and not Johnny Depp, who does the voice all right but comes off looking like a pathetic goth clown.  You can't mess with perfection!  Thank God for the original series, now coming out in a set!

Now on Internet Movie Database and You Tube.  Care to discuss, or still recovering?

Or are they waiting till they see it?  Did any do cameos?  I am particularly interested to learn what Denise Nickerson thinks of the Burton/Depp takes on two classics in which she was involved.

Calendar Events / Announcements '07 I / Met Roger Davis, Liked Him
« on: March 22, 2007, 08:02:07 AM »
This past weekend at the 17th annual Festival of the West, http://www.festivalofthewest.com/ Roger Davis showed up with his "Alias Smith and Jones" costar, Ben Murphy.  What a pair of cutups!  They were obviously great good buddies with a wonderful rapport.  I think if more of that had appeared onscreen and Roger Davis had been able to employ more of his obviously considerable comedic talents the show might have been another "Wild, Wild West."  He was certainly a good Artemus Gordon type, with the many voices and impressions he can do.  When I handed him my program to sign, he said, "Sure I'll sign it.  RIGHT ON THE COVER."  I was like, "Oh, no you don't!" and grabbed it back, but he was just having fun with me and signed it very nicely inside.  (I wasn't so lucky with the last person, who I think was just tired and spaced out and scrawled right on the cover before I could even notice and stop them, being tired and spaced out myself.  So I ended up with a crummed-up cover AFTER getting everyone else to sign.  NEXT YEAR:  COVER PROTECTOR!)  Yes, I AM going next year!  The event was WONDERFUL and everyone was GREAT!  Charlie LeSeur, who did the Q & As, is a true genius!  He only had to look up Roger Davis's credits when he told me he "thought he was on 'Dark Shadows.'"  I said, "That's the first time I've seen you look up anything!" and he said, "Well, 'Dark Shadows' wasn't a western."  Man literally knows EVERYTHING ANYONE EVER did on a western!

During the Q & A Roger Davis shared with us a chilling story about the events surrounding Peter Duel's suicide on "Alias Smith and Jones" and what it was like replacing him.  Everyone seemed to like him and he came across as a heck of a nice guy.  I've corresponded with Denise Nickerson but this is the first DS alum I can say I've actually met, and liked what I saw.
